History The land of Corvail is the heart of both Athylon and the New Xenthian Empire, despite being the youngest of the six countries. Having won their independence from the tyrannical Valnessian monarchy following a bloody civil war in 233 AV, the revolutionaries known as the Xenthian Brotherhood seized control of all Valnessian territory west of the Great Divide. Seceding from the kingdom and naming their new country in honor of the martyred leader of the Brotherhood’s revolution, Vero Corvaila, the Corvailians founded a vast republic along the coast of the Isirian Sea. They built their capital of Verosa in the shadow of what they called “the Godlands”, a mysterious chain of floating islands that hung suspended above the water. Despite frequent hardship in their formative years, Corvail would grow to become one of the most powerful nations in the world in the centuries that followed, securing economic and technological supremacy through trade and collaboration with Rotharia, Valnesse, and Al-Shahar, as well as through their control over ancient Xenthian ruins, the eastern Isirian Sea, and the aid of the Order of Saint Alerion. Luring people with promises of wealth and freedom, scholars, artists, craftsmen, and inventors from every land flocked to the new country, and the power of the Corvailian Senate grew ever stronger. By the turn of the sixth century, Corvail’s wealth had surpassed even Rotharia’s, and their technological prowess had reached the point where they were developing wonders that until then had been unimaginable. In 503 AV, the first of the airships was invented by a team of Corvailian engineers led by an Al-Shahari prodigy, Arelmir Skywright. Dubbed the Wings of Avaleria, the Corvailians used this airship to set foot upon the hallowed islands of the Godlands for the first time – and what they found was just as majestic and awe-inspiring as their name for the isles, both rich in natural resources and free of the corruption of the world below, had suggested. Together with the Order of Saint Alerion, they built the city of “New Xenthia” here among the clouds and made it their new capital. Then, however, they did the unthinkable: the country that had for so long been a symbol of peace and unity declared sudden war on both Aeseri in the north and Sakharvos in the far east. Safe in the sky, the other countries were unable to launch a counterattack. The newest age in Corvail’s history was beginning. Twenty years later, the wars still raged on, and though Corvail’s military might, augmented by a fleet of airships, was proving to be unstoppable, tensions reached a boiling point within New Xenthia itself. A sudden revolution among the Corvailian patricians left half of the Senate dead and its ruling council, the Triumvirate, deposed. Aurelius Falbrecht, a beloved war hero, returned from his campaign in eastern Aeseri and, with the support of the Order of Saint Alerion and the remnants of the Senate, declared himself Emperor of New Xenthia and announced his intentions to unite Athylon under one banner. As of the present day, Corvail, Valnesse, Rotharia, southern Aeseri, and many western Sakharvi territories are all officially part of the New Xenthian Empire. With the sudden death of Aurelius, however, his young son Cecilius Falbrecht is set to inherit, leaving the empire’s future uncertain and Aeseri and Sakharvos hungry for revolution. |
