All that silver provides is access to their online updates, demos, and live games. To be able to play online you have to have a subsription to a gold account, so if you want to play online you have tyo pay. I play to many games to list (halo, gears, C&C, etc.) but you can see under my games list on my gamercard.

what about downloadable content? I dont really play the 360 for its online capabilities. I've said im not a huge fan of shooters, so I wouldnt be going online to play them. Can I still download content for other games that have it with a silver?

yeah you can still download content and demos, the only thing gold really does is let you play multiplayer. A majority of the games support online capabilites anymore, so you are not limited to shooters.
Heres a link to compare silver and Gold for yourself
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/memberships/?WT.svl=nav

Also the price for 12 month gold is no longer 59.99 it is now 49.99 + you get a free extra months making it 13 months.... whoo...whoo....big deal...
