Pete fell into the process so smoothly he barely gave it a second thought. This was what he did, ex-spy or not. Forty-five minutes was going to be a tight squeeze, but Drew was right to want to get started on this as soon as they could manage. It was her mission and her team, so she’d be handling the big decisions and all the rest, but there were still plenty of ways he could help before they got going. Apart from all the usual preparations, he’d have to see if there was anything they could do to draw SHIELD’s attention elsewhere, and he was reasonably certain Drew was more than familiar with the apartment itself. After tilting her cup back for another sip of coffee, Drew nodded, the gesture both answering his question and sanctioning his course. "As well as I used to know my own apartment," she told him. He’d figured as much. As close as he’d heard those two had been before the Registration Act had passed, he imagined it had been nearly a second home for her. She looked like she was gathering her resolve, preparing to shift gears the4 same way he had. Couldn’t be easy. Not for this. He knew she was good, but back before Amanda had joined up with MacTaggert, there’d been a reason Jardine used to call on Pete to handle matters when she got into trouble rather than trying to take care of it himself. And it had nothing to do with the sneaky git being old. Pete was confident that Drew would keep her nerve, despite that. This wouldn’t be the first time she’d been on a mission that was more personal than business. "Anything you can come up with to send some of them on a wild goose chase would be appreciated, and helpful." A slight smile crept along Pete’s face. “Already have one idea, assuming I can get hold of Ramsey and his new Broadcast Golden Girl, luv,” he said. Drew was a sharp one, he wouldn’t need to say more than that for her own imagination to supply the possibilities. If that wasn’t available, he was sure he could come up with something else while he was cramming himself into his bloody Wakandan stealth suit. He could at least be confident that Drew wouldn’t keep sneaking looks at him because of that the way Pryde had. They weren’t going to get all that done in the window she’d announced by sitting around on the couch, though, no matter how much he’d been enjoying the company. If she needed anything else, he’d make sure he did what he could to get a hold of it as well. Even if it was cat treats. This wouldn’t be his first mission to include those. Drew’s brows nearly shot off the top of her head as she set her cup down. "You're going to have to tell me about that one some time." Which was only to be expected. “Why not sooner?” Pete said letting a casual smile slip through his focused expression. “I could probably go for another cuppa when we get back.” Drew looked like she was fully in the game, now, but a grin grew on her face as she looked at him. "If you have any leads on where to get a few bags of catnip, we might be ahead of the game. Otherwise, I'll see if there's some canned tuna or salmon around the pantry." “You’re in luck,” Pete told her. “There’s a girl works in the club who’s a bit mad for cats. Keeps some in the dry storage for the local strays. I’ll pop down to grab some while we’re getting ready.” He should have time to include that with all the rest, if he was quick. He nearly got moving, but Drew’s smile changed right then, going a bit soft and her hand caught his, giving it a little squeeze. He stopped right in his tracks, meeting those bright emerald eyes and arching a questioning brow. "Thanks, Pete. I appreciate the help, and the company." Pete angled back toward her and returned the squeeze before he realized it was happening. “Friends look out for each other, yeah?” he said, voice a little softer. “And I like counting you among them.” Even new, with all that had changed for him since joining the Resistance, gaining friends was not something he considered he did naturally, and he placed a high value on the ones he made. Now, and in the case of Drew, especially. |

The more SHIELD personnel off chasing ghosts the better as far as she was concerned. Anything at all Pete could do there that he was willing to handle and free her up for gathering the team and coming up with a plan that would hopefully have the least chance of getting them all killed as possible. They'd save that for trying to actually catch the damned cat. “Already have one idea, assuming I can get hold of Ramsey and his new Broadcast Golden Girl, luv,” he said with a smile she cataloged as being possibly just on the edge of devious. One dark brow lifted just slightly, but she'd find out soon enough, Jessica was sure, and he could tell her about Pete Wisdom and the case needing cat treats some other time when they weren't all rushing off on possibly the craziest thing she'd ever conceived of, which was quite an impressive list to top. “Why not sooner?” Pete said letting a casual smile slip through his focused expression. “I could probably go for another cuppa when we get back.” Now there was an idea, though she had an idea they were all going to want more than just coffee by the time they got back. "Hmmm...actually, how do you feel about beer pong?" she asked, mostly rhetorically since they could talk about that later. Now, it occurred to her that, even better than cat treats, would be some cat nip. Provided they could some up with some of that somehow. Not something SHIELD normally stocked in the helicarrier from what she remembered and most of the Resistance wasn't much on keeping pets. Unless you counted Snakes and Sauron, which was the only way she could really explain him at all. Again, Pete managed to surprise her, though this time she possibly should've seen the answer coming. “You’re in luck,” Pete told her. “There’s a girl works in the club who’s a bit mad for cats. Keeps some in the dry storage for the local strays. I’ll pop down to grab some while we’re getting ready.” Strippers with catnip. Check. It was good to have contacts, and from the rumor mill it seemed Pete had quite a variety. "Excellent." And with that, it was time to get the wheels in motion in earnest, but before that happened, Jess found herself reaching for Pete's hand, giving it a light, appreciative squeeze. For the company and for the help that he didn't have to give and for not pronouncing her completely out of her mind ten seconds in like most people would've. Even with good reason. “Friends look out for each other, yeah?” he said, voice a little softer as he turned back to her slightly, hand tightening on hers in return for a moment. “And I like counting you among them.” "The feeling's mutual," she replied sincerely. Friends. Yes. Those were a very good thing to have. "Time to get the ball rolling, I guess," Jessica added, starting for the door, flashing him a quick grin, "Operation: Rescue Chewie The Cat is a go." The rest of the team probably would think she was insane, and wouldn't hesitate to tell her so, but they'd still do it. Like Pete said, friends looked out for one another. [Con'td in Beer Pong, I believe, when that gets started] |
