Was there a specific scenario you were thinking of that would allow you to use it from the sideline? Generally, items and techniques do not have their effect activated from the sidelines since they're placed facedown when not in the active position. |

You can only attach items/techniques face down on the sideline? |

Yeah, unless there's a card effect that says otherwise. Also if your fighter retreats from the arena to the sidelines you'd flip any cards attached facedown and pay the spirit cost (if any) once it goes back to the arena. |

Does Dragon Pen resolve before or after the Draw Step?
Just wanting some clarity on what defines the "beginning of your turn". A turn consists of many steps, so I'm pretty sure I resolve Dragon Pen first, draw 4 from Pen, then 2 for the Draw Step. |

You are correct. Dragon Pen's effect (as well as the other cards that apply at the beginning of your turn) happens before anything else, including your draw and spirit gain. |

One more question regarding Dragon Pen and Mafuuken:
If this card is discarded via Dragon Pen, does it count as an event or as a technique? I've been playing it as if it counts it as a Technique, but I wouldn't be surprised if the game checks both cards in the discard pile after Dragon Pen's cost is paid, and it recognizes both cards as events since Mafuuken says it's an event in the discard pile. |

That's a tricky one, but if I had to call it, I'd say it counts Mafuuken as an event. Reasoning is that while a technique in hand and the deck, the effect doesn't resolve until the cards are in the discard pile. Seems that it would check while they were there, after being discarded. That being said, that's an unofficial ruling on a decade-defunct TCG, so take it with a grain of salt. |

Mafuuken only becomes an event when it hits the discard pile. The check happens before it hits the discard pile if I've understood it correctly. |

But if you read Dragon Pen, you discard the cards first. Then there is a new sentence that asks to check if both cards were events.
I agree it's a tricky ruling. Like I said, I've been playing it as technique, but now here I am 13 years older with a better eye for CCGs and it seems like Dragon Pen would work with Mafuuken or anything else that counts as an event in the discard pile. I'll go with whatever the community thinks is the correct way to play it. Let me know plz!! |

Another way to figure this out is to imagine how it would be programmed in a video game. Game activates Dragon Pen (which is not optional), discards a random card from your hand, then discards the top card of your deck. Mafuuken has a line of code that makes it an event in the discard pile. There is no transitional zone between hand/deck to discard pile. Both discarded cards would be events in the discard pile, therefore passing the condition for Dragon Pen's draw 4. Does this make sense? |

Like I said, take what I said with a grain of salt. Honestly, at this point, it's pretty much whatever a person's specific playgroup would decide. There is no 'official' stance.
That was pretty much my personal line of thinking. Transitional zones aren't a thing, and the card effect doesn't break down through resolution. Honestly, though, while I don't particularly agree with it, I'd place inviso's word higher than my own on it. |
