• Try as it might, the morning light barely pierced through the treetops. Even so, the time of the day was undeniable. Everything was bathed in a calming, soft pastel turquoise - the sign of early dawn. Skiing down from the higher atmosphere, what little light there was bounced around, reflecting off of and/or blending in with the earthbound nature, creating a surreal untouched paradise. There were even dewdrops on the leaves.

A great yawned escaped from the young lioness' mouth. Partially hidden in a crevice of wood and stone, her body curled inward, against the side of a massive treetrunk. Ivy and moss mobbed the mast of the fallen plant. It was a sad and gorgeous sight to behold, a memorial of sorts from the rest of this forest to this one collapse tree. While the others were close together, near each other, a space had form around here, a clearing so to speak. In a way, it seemed like the other plant life that now grew here had come to comfort their larger friend.

What a nice thought, or at least it would be if that was your point of view. Bahiyah probably would have laughed if someone had said that out loud, thinking it was sappy and silly. Another yawn. She groaned as she rolled over, underside and legs now visible. One amber eye crept open slowly, allowing the environment to enter on its own terms. The other followed soon after. There the young lioness rested, unmoving until she decided how she was gonna spend her day. Her mismatched ears flicked about, identifying sounds both known and unknown.

Firo was up early that morning. Normally he might have waited for his buddy Chion to wake and they would go out and cause trouble together. Or he might have rolled over and fallen asleep again. But today, the little golden cub had stepped over his pride mates quietly and decided to work on his climbing skills. He thought he was pretty good at it already but it never hurt to practise it more. And it didn't feel like practising because he was having fun too.

The small Tawi nosed about on the ground until he found a nice angled tree. He flung himself up and clawed his way higher and higher. Firo reached the end of a branch and leapt out to the branch of another tree. His heart dropped when he thought he wouldn't make it across but was able to claw his way in time.

A few more horizontal jumps and he found himself in the presence of another lion. Someone was half hidden among that fallen tree in the small clearing. Firo crept closer along his high branch. He was careful to be as silent as he could. The spotted cub was almost on top of the lion now - lioness, he amended. But he still couldn't see who she was. Another Tawi? A dangerous rogue? The shadows made it hard to see.

Then, with a loud crack, the branch supporting Firo broke and the cub fell tumbling down onto the lioness, screaming all the way.

Another Tawi feline was dozing nearby. The faint light of morning filtering in had not disturbed her slumber. Getting up early wasn't a very common thing with her, and she usually didn't climb out of a tree or a burrow in the ground until the sun was high in the sky. Last night she had decided for a tree, and was draped lazily over a branch midway up a tree.

And for certain, she would've stayed heavily asleep for a few more hours...If it wasn't for the set of events that woke her up. Firo had lept through different trees than the one she was in, so that hadn't disturbed her. But the sudden crack of a branch and the scream of the cub as he had fallen startled her awake. Ashanti jolted awake, half slipping off her own branch and barely managing to catch herself in such a drowsy state. Half awake and dangling there, so could only make a surprised mumble of what would be words. Taking a gold paw she carefully supported herself on the branch while rubbing the heaviness out of eyes.

More awake and alert now, she glanced in the direction of the noise. Leaves drifting through the air gave hint to the path of destruction as the cub had fallen with the branch. Her hazel eyes followed the trail down to the ground to find her clanmates with some alarm there. The lean female quickly scurried out of her tree and rushed to them. "You guys okay?" Her eyes darted rapidly over them, looking for signs of injuries.

  • RAWL! The cry of a startled feline echoed within the forest, fading over a greater distance. Still going through the process of actually waking up, Bahiyah had missed any warnings signs or hints that were present, such as the amount of falling leaves and the size of the twigs. Therefore she couldn't have predicted that a decently sized figure would soon pounce on her from above, purposely or not.

    You guys okay?

From the sound of it, Ashanti had witnessed the whole scene. And, from the smell of it, Firo was the one who had caused the disturbance. However, at the moment, she couldn't actually see anything. Far quicker than they had opened, her peepers had shut tight upon impact, so as not to witness whatever doom had in store.

"Yeah yeah yeah...," she replied, shaking her patched form in order to remove the orangish cub from her shoulders, "Nothing serious. We're fine..."

Her gold eyes revealed indications of heightened annoyance, metaphorically cutting Firo in half.
"So much for one of the clan's 'Best Climbers'," she added, implying falsehoods in this claim, "More like 'Clan Klutz.'"

So much for a peaceful morning...

Firo's undignified scream was cut short when he landed on the lioness. It was Yah-yah! Relief washed over him as firstly, it wasn't some crazy old lion, and second, he hadn't landed on a branch that stabbed him to death. He was cast off Bahiyah's shoulders and he landed next to her. Firo heard another voice and saw that it was Ashanti.

'I'm ok,' he replied, highly embarrassed. His reputation as the best climber was sure to take a dent. And sure enough, Bahiyah made a play on it. Firo puffed out his chest in defence. 'I still am the best climber! That branch was old and I was getting too big for it anyway. I shouldn't have...' and silenced himself, realizing he was arguing himself into a hole. 'Um so what are you both doing today? Want to play by the river? The river is strong today I heard from a very reliable source.' That is, himself.

At their responses, she allowed herself to relax glad that she wouldn't have to try setting any bones. Glancing around now, she realized how different the lighting seemed then usual. After a moment it occurred to her that it was around dawn. "Wow it's early," she commented before her muzzle gaped into a yawn. The golden lioness extended her small body into a stretch, adjusting to the fact that it would be hard to get back to sleep now. She seemed rather small next to the other adolescent. While there was a chance Ashanti was a bit older than Yah-Yah, she was closer in size to Nuru than a full adolescent. Perhaps it was her unusual diet.

Catching the comments on Firo being the best climber, she raised an eyebrow and smirked. "Oh so you're the best climber," she began cheekily, "Now here I was thinking that was me....and judging by this I think I might just be right." While she was untypically small, she had powerful legs to haul her light frame up trees easily. It had came from living in another jungle most of her life, and making her home in a tree where her meerkat guardian felt she was safer.

Clearly the cub wasn't too phased by the incident. He was still eager to play. "Well....I was sleeping, but so much for that. River sounds good, I might can find some breakfast....You know how to swim?" In the off chance that this next adventure went like the last, she didn't want him nearly drowning.

  • I still am the best climber! That branch was old and I was getting too big for it anyway. I shouldn't have...'

She rolled her amber eyes and exhaled lightly. "Yeah yeah yeah...," the lioness thought, "Excuses excuses." Then Ashanti joined in with some jokes of her own, correcting him about his inaccurate reputation too. In truth, the other adolescent probably held that title, or would if not already.

Making him feel worse about it wouldn't do any of them any good. Bahiyah decided to leave it be this time, seeing that he was somewhat remorseful about the whole thing. Even though it took him some time, he would find the error in his ways before anyone had to call him out on them. Generally a good kid and one Bahiyah could usually tolerate. Firo, at least, wasn't one of the more sassymouthed cubs in Tawi. For the moment, they would remain un-named and were thankfully not around, making even more noise.

Um so what are you both doing today? Want to play by the river? The river is strong today I heard from a very reliable source.

"How long had he been up?" the feline asked herself, admiring his stamina. At the same time, she wondered how long it would before he just fainted from exhaustion.
"A reliable source, huh?" she mimicked, "Well, we'll just see about that."

...I was sleeping, but so much for that. River sounds good, I might can find some breakfast...

Yep. So much for a few minutes, or hours, more of rest. Bahiyah was still drowsy, but a splash from the cool, morning waters would chase that away very quickly. "I'm game for some fishing," she announced, "Let's have at it then!"

On that note, and with a mild bounce in her step, the tri-colored lioness began walking in the direction of the river.

Firo frowned at Ashanti's taunts. And just as he was about to open his mouth to retort, Bahiyah took the initiative to start moving towards the river before the tension escalated again. With a stretch, Firo followed close to Yah-yah, smiling up at her and happy that she and Ashanti were willing to play. But deep down, Firo knew that he was still the best climber in the pride.

'Of course I know how to swim!' Firo replied Ashanti. 'Do you know how to swim? The waters are fast today though . . . I heard from er my friend.' The spotted cub veered off their path for a moment to pounce at a dung beetle, missed as it scurried away, and resumed his position beside Bahiyah.

Very soon they could hear the sounds of the river and it was rather loud. Much louder than Firo had anticipated. The rains of the previous days had inflated the river to much higher levels and it was flowing fast. Could they actually fish in these fast waters?

She looked down the cub as they walked. "Yep, there was a river in the jungle where I grew up too. I'm used to swimming." The lioness had enjoyed her days in the Kijani, but in the Tawi she wasn't too homesick. Both had trees and vines and various plants in common. The forest here though seemed denser throughout and lacked the occasional clearings of her former home. And the river, while mighty, didn't have a waterfall.

Her golden ears twitched at the roar ahead. That was certainly quite loud. "Just how big did your friend say the river had gotten?" It practically sounded like the waterfall tumbling down in the Kijani jungle! There would certainly be no swimming today. Or fishing as Yah-Yah suggested. Granted she could've cared less about the fish.

As they drew closer, the water source could be seen. Hazel eyes widened at the swollen torrent of water. Ashanti wouldn't be surprised that the river would flood if they had much more rainy weather. Hopefully the weather would stay dry for awhile and allow the water to go down. "I don't think we're swimming today, we'd get sucked into the current and washed away." And the danger wasn't just for the cub either. Even an adult lion could be swept off in such strong water if they weren't careful.

  • Again, Firo mentioned his source had predetermined the strength of the river. And, again, Bahiyah internally wondered who it was that had told him this. She was shocked to see the truth in the statement, assuming it would have ended up entirely false or not as extreme. Boy was she wrong...

Just how big did your friend say the river had gotten?

"Because It would have been convenient if your 'friend' had mentioned how strong the current was." With an additional comment, she finished the lioness' question off, then paused for effect, "That information would have been helpful before now, don't ya think?" Gold irises engulfing black pupils planted themselves on the young cub. Strike two.

I don't think we're swimming today, we'd get sucked into the current and washed away.

"No! Really?" she snapped, perturbed by this possible waste of time. Edging the water, Bahiyah reached out and dabbed her paw into the rushing white suds. The force almost knocked her in, but she saved herself, pulling her body back before worse happened.

Not one to give up that easily, she paced alongside the bank. Stopping to scan ahead in either direction, the teen feline considered her options. What if the river wasn't as rough elsewhere?
"Which way do you think the turbulence will lessen?" she shouted to the others, asking for their input.

Firo grinned in embarassment at the comments about his source from both the adolescents. 'Yes...that information would have been useful..' he agreed. 'Just when I was - I mean when my friend was here very early this morning, he said it wasn't as big. But the river really is gushing now isn't it?'

Firo's ears flattened as he thought that perhaps his pride sisters would want to return to their home log since they can't fish or swim. Then that would really put a dent to his plans for some morning fun. 'I..I..let's...'

Bahiyah's words dispelled his fear instantly. 'Yes! I think the river will definitely be less turbulent elsewhere. I know so! Perhaps downstream! Let's go!' the cub exclaimed yanking Yah-yah's tail before disappearing from their sight into some bushes.

Well Yah-Yah was sure easily ruffled. Ashanti stayed clear of the moody teen lioness. She felt a bit of sympathy for Firo, though. Snapping at the youngster wasn't likely to get anywhere. The small golden female jolted forward to help the other lioness, but she pulled herself back fine.

Before she could respond with her opinion, the cub bolted off downriver. She couldn't let him go it alone and get into who knows what trouble. Hopefully he was heading in the right direction. She honestly wasn't quite so familiar with the layout of the river here just yet. For the most part she could find her way around the forest, but she didn't explore the river banks very much. Pale tawny paws thudded the ground behind him, keeping up with his pace.

"We need to look for the widest, shallowest spot," she called out. Perhaps there the water would be calmer, at least at the edges maybe.

  • Bahiyah's ear twitched at the mistake. She wasn't sure what she had actually heard, but it sounded like he said 'I', instead of 'the mysterious friend', who was providing the river information. One of the lioness' eyebrows rose above a golden eye, looked at him questionably, then went back to gauging the foaming waves.
"Uh huh..." was all she could say in return, since no proof of him lying was available at the moment.

There was only one vote, but, before another could be cast, the cub bounded off downstream and Ashanti went after him. Guess that's where they all were headed next.

She trailed behind them a few steps, loosing enthusiasm for the group trip the longer it took. By this point, Yah-yah didn't care what the others did. If they decided to return home, that would be their choice, but she wasn't going with them. This river wouldn't beat her that easily. She wanted fish for breakfast and would have it by the end!

Firo ran through the bushes, weaving his way through effortlessly due to his small size. He tilted his head back to see whether the girls were following him and immediately wished he hadn't, for a branch whipped into his face and left a gash on his cheek. 'Owwwie,' he yelped. But he was glad to see that the adolescents were following behind. The morning wasn't going to be boring afterall.

Firo stopped as he noticed a bend of the river had some large boulders across its width. The river here was definitely not as strong as before, but still flowing higher than usual. The cub waited for the others to reach him. He observed that there were in fact five to six boulders stretched across the river to the other bank and provided good stepping stones across. The water was right up to the top of the boulders, but on normal days, most of the rockface would have been exposed to the air.

The cub dapped his paw at the bleeding gash on his cheek, determined that a little cut like that wouldn't stop his fun.

Ashanti was still bigger than Firo despite her oddly small stature, so she wasn't maneuvering quite as quickly as the cub. It was still a brisk pace trying to keep up with the youngster and travel through the undergrowth. Certainly a way of adding some excitement and energy to the morning at least.

As they reached a different part of the river, her eyes looked for something else. The golden female snagged a few leaves on her claws before joining Firo. "You can rub these in on that cut if you want, it helps." She had learned that plant after her own adventures as a cub in the Kijani Jungle. It grew well here in the Tawi Forest too, luckily. Now with that out of the way, she could analyze the river.

Ah boulders. Well that was an improvement. There was hardly any of them visible above the water now, though. But they were still better off than before. Plus, the water wasn't as rapid here. "Hey, Yah-Yah, think we manage to hang on to those boulders if we leap out to them?" There was some renewed confidence in this fishing venture noted in her voice. A light, somewhat cocky, smile played across her muzzle. So long as the boulders weren't too slippery, they could make this work.
