Raziel’s front leg dangled freely towards the ground, the rest of his body sprawled out along one of the soft, moss-covered branches in the jungle. His tail flopped over to the side, twitching occasionally to get rid of a lingering bug. He easily placed his head onto his other paw, chin sticking out and mane tumbling around his face.
His eyes glanced down after a few moments of listening to the varied jungle sounds. “Hey Vivi.” He said, drawing out the name until it sounded more like viiiv, lightening the sound at the very end.
“Why do you think we’re still here?” He said, focusing in on the tigoness beneath him. Unlike Raziel, the larger feline wasn’t so sure about hanging out on treetrunks or vines all day. He’d yet to convince her that it was, in fact, completely safe. At least for him.
“Every time we try to leave…we just keep coming back.” He said in a wistful tone. It wasn’t that these lands weren’t the perfect paradise for two rogues like them, with no pride to join or to call their own. Here, the days seemed to blur into each other, one after another. He wasn’t sure just how much either of them could take of it anymore.

On the ground, resting not too far from the male leon was a tigon, a female one at that. Her light pelt contrasted with the jungle greens greatly, making her stick out like a sour toe. It was for that reason alone she had decided to keep her head down, especially in this type of area.
Her eyes rolled in disbelief. His pelt wasn't much darker than hers, but he was still brave enough to go hop up in a tree for all to see. She, instead, was being plagued by a lingering deja vu feeling. Wasn't this how it had started before? Him getting trapped and her getting shot? She didn't want to take the chance again and was nervous; the whole event felt so soon and not that long ago. Her leg began stinging, it hurt just thinking about that pain again.
Hey Viiiv.
Her ears perked at the sound of his voice, a friendly tone uttering words directed toward her.
Why do you think we’re still here?
Varinka's striped head rose up and tilted in confusion. Her pale eyes stared up at him, unsure of what to say. What had he meant by this? Was it one of those rhetorical questions or did it require an answer?
Every time we try to leave…we just keep coming back.
Ah ok. This one called for a response. "Where else would we go?" she asked innocently. She was still getting used to the idea that lions sometimes wandered around as rogues, too. While tigers did it all the time, their cousins were more...family oriented, or so it seemed. Thanks to Raz though, this new information was gained and carefully logged away for later reference.

- “I don’t know…” Raziel trailed off with a sigh before Varinka could start her sentence. It wasn’t an answer to a question, but merely the expression of a blank thought…the expression of uncertainty.
He met Varinka’s eyes, holding her confused gaze. It took a moment or two before the clouds cleared, so to speak. The leon was still getting used to adjusting his sentences so that they’d make better sense to his tigon companion.
Where else would we go? Her soft voice eventually answered as she looked at him for more info, more insight as to what was going on inside of his brain.
“Anywhere but here, I guess.” He said, shrugging his shoulders. “Even though I grew up in jungles like these...This place…it’s been making me uneasy lately. Do you know what I mean?”
Raziel rolled himself onto his back, his hair now sticking out at the sides from being pressed against the log. He was only half concerned about slipping off the side of the rounded log. There were still a couple of vines around him to grab onto if necessary. And besides, even if he did fall off and crash into Varinka, he was light enough that she wouldn’t be hurt. Just annoyed. That, he could live with.

Anywhere but here, I guess. Even though I grew up in jungles like these...This place…it’s been making me uneasy lately. Do you know what I mean?
The words weren't said aloud but 'Not really' was her first thought. Things many times had double meanings, specifically morphed based on the how the speaker arranged them. Trying to explain a feeling to others and how they received it once explained was completely subjective.
As expected, there was no set plan or destination. Varinka had grown accustomed to this. Though it was not a trait Raz usually carried, being the more creative thinker out of the two of them, the pair had both been at a standstill of ideas lately.
"Do you mean uneasy as in 'restless'," Varinka began, "or uneasy as in 'nervous'?" For each example, her voice mimicked the emotion for it, as best as it could. Better that she ask than make a wrong assumption. She hoped he meant the 'restless' definition.
Varinka was used to moving around constantly, never staying in one place long. But this also hadn't been her decision before. She was still deciding on whether it was good thing or not. While showing disagreement with her friend felt traitorous, it was comforting to be stationed in one territory, too. At the same time, since he had lived in this type of area his whole life, maybe they should find someplace else, somewhere that they both were new to and could appreciate equally. Just to be fair anyways.
The tigoness winced and her brows furrowed mildly. Lightly leaning her body in any direction, she tried to match his in opposition, attempting to pre-perceive the landing point should the leon fall. Then again, she didn't want him to be hurt either. So maybe it was best that she "catch" him. 'Oh please don't land on my leg!' she thought.
"Why do you like it up there so much?" the shecat asked, a sisterly firmness present in the question, "Are you trying to become a monkey or something?"

- Do you mean uneasy as in 'restless', or uneasy as in 'nervous'?
Varinka questioned, her slight confusion stull clear to Raziel. He didn’t have to look down at her face to guess the expression on her face. He still stared up into the green expanse of leaves and vines above, noticing for once that he ws unable to see the sky from here. Usually, he tried to pick out a place where he could see at least a small patch of it.
“I’m a little bit nervous, but I’m mostly restless. I feel as if we’ve been here too long.” He said, before letting out a little laugh. “I guess that’s what we get for moving around so much.” Was that all that it was, then? Was he only antsy because they’d been on the move so much recently? No…It had to be more than that. Raziel just wasn’t sure as to what he was feeling yet.
Why do you like it up there so much? Are you trying to become a monkey or something? Varinka said, with a playful annoyance.
“Why?” He said with a fake gasp, placing a paw on his chest theatrically.“I am part monkey, you know.” He said, waving his unusual tail in the air. “At least, my old pride used to joke around about that, saying I must be able to swing from trees just using this tail.” He quickly glanced back down at Varinka, curious to see how she’d respond to that one. He contiuned to wave his, failing to notice that his body had begun to slide and was now slipping off of the side of the log .
He let out a squeak as he fell off the log, flailing his limbs wildly in an attempt to catch a vine or two on the way down.
He didn’t, only catching a part of Rinka as he sunk into the softer forest floor.
“Okay, so maybe I’m not part monkey after all…”

The reply revealed he had felt both, but restlessness more than nervousness.
I feel as if we’ve been here too long...I guess that’s what we get for moving around so much.
While Raz seemed amused by this fact, Varinka, upon hearing it aloud, felt her mood drop. Though she hadn't been as perky as her companion before, she was upbeat and in better spirits. Now, it felt as this "beat" had been knocked out of rhythm, thumping along and trying to match the rest of the music again. What was the difference between sounds and thoughts? Why was one so much more powerful at times, but only when it best suited the sense?
Why?
The tigon had almost forgotten that she commented about his attraction to trees.
I am part monkey, you know.
A small 'ha' left her jaws at this, as if to say "suuuuuure". However, her more gullible side could believe it, finding clues from past observations that tied this remark together and turning it into truth.
At least, my old pride used to joke around about that, saying I must be able to swing from trees just using this tail.
She lost rhythm again. The more Raz moved, the more debris fell from his post. It gave her something else to concentrate on luckily, keeping her distracted from anything that might ruin their relaxation. Small twigs and a few bits of greenery fell, surfing softly down to the grass below. All she could was brace herself, tensing up for the collision that was about to come.
Okay, so maybe I’m not part monkey after all…
At first, all she could was sigh and shake her head. "And to think," the female joked, "I put up with you on the regular..." The statement had a sisterly punch to it, accompanied by the small, but genuine smile she only shared with him, her friend.

- As Raziel began to pull himself off of Varinka’s side, he kept glancing over at her to gauge her reaction. Not like there was much you could tell, though. The tigon had been known to keep a fantastic poker face on occasion. Thankfully, she wasn’t mad at him. That much was positive, considering she hadn’t cuffed him over the head like a misbehaving cub.
He stopped himself from standing up on all fours. Glancing back up at the tree branches, he quickly decided that he’d rather stay on the ground for the remainder of the evening. He tucked in his head a little bit, and rolled onto his back right beside Varinka—almost mirroring the position he’d been in before he’d fallen.
And to think, I put up with you on the regular...
The tigon said after a soft sigh. Her words were more optimistic, though, and Raziel could hear the smile hidden in her tones. He turned his head over to the side, and sure enough a soft smile broke across his friend’s face. He grinned right back, replying to her statement with a sound coming out of his nose, almost like a laughing-like sound mixed with an exhale.
He turned back to his side, eyes once again traveling up towards the endless green canopy of leaves and vines. For the first time, he noticed something odd. He reached a paw over to Varinka, tapping her on the side.
“You asked me a minute ago why I like it up there so much.” He said, in a more relaxed, tranquil voice.
“It’s because... I can see the stars.” He said in a softer tone, eyes staring directly up into the trees. Right above the duo’s heads, a small patch of the evening sky snuck in, a few white stars scattered against a dark blue sky.

Varinka chuckled to herself. She guessed the fall had knocked some sense into him, seeing as Raziel didn't return to his loft after. It was a logical choice, one that gave her permission to relax some more, too. There was less of a chance of him being spotted by a hunter, which would then lead to her possibly being discovered again.
Her attention went from him to the surrounding area. Silently, she watched and listened as the dragonflies, lightning bugs, and gnats hovered around, landing on the abundant vegetation with near angelic grace. Her tail flicked carelessly along her lined side. Its tip twitched to and fro, in no predictable pattern.
The lion's paw gently broke her trance, placing her focus back on him. She responded with a gentle, ladylike "Hmm?"
You asked me a minute ago why I like it up there so much.
Her head nodded. She had indeed just asked him that very question in that short time frame.
It’s because... I can see the stars.
Varinka smiled. It was a nice answer, more serious than the one before by a mile at least. Her own violet eyes stared up at the sky, tracing the constellations with her pupils. She, too, felt an urge to climb up higher, to be closer to the bright dots, but refused let Raz know he had changed her mind about something. The shecat would never hear the end of it.

- Raziel returned his paw to his side, still staring up into the jungle's canopy. From the looks of it, Varinka seemed to be just as entranced with their beauty as the lion. He couldn't help but visualize his own constellations, attempting to make out the faces of lions amid the stars. His mind drifted back to the days when he was a cub, when he had looked up at the stars with his father. It had been on a night like this, after the two found a spot where the vegetation overhead gave way to sky.
"My father..he used to take me out to look up at these stars. He'd point out pictures in the sky, showing me these constellations." Raziel started in a softer, memory-filled voice--one that usually signified one of his ramblings.
"Have you ever heard of the Kings of The Past, Viv?" He interrupted himself, abrubtly realizing that if he started on a ramble about past kings that Varinka might not have any idea of what he was talking about. If she was too confused, she'd probably be too polite to speak up or let him know until after he was finished.
"All of the great ones are up there, watching over all of us." He continued, fairly sure that the tigon's answer to his last question would be no. "He would point out their faces in the night sky--well, the groups of stars that supposedly looked like lions. He'd tell me their names--life stories--where they lived--what they accomplished." Raziel said, a hint of longing creeping into his voice.
"Then, he'd look at me with this....I don't know, this expectation. As if even though he wasn't a king, and I wasn't a prince, he thought I should be. That I needed to be. Or, at least I should make it up there with the great kings somehow, someday. But who am I kidding." Raziel broke off, a darker tone in his voice. "I'm not a king. And I'm honestly not sure that I ever will be..."

My father..he used to take me out to look up at these stars. He'd point out pictures in the sky, showing me these constellations.
The atmosphere disintegrated into a somber state. Talks about past loved ones usually would bring bittersweet nostalgia, but the wish that he wouldn't take it there entered her thoughts. He had had his birth family and she had had Eslyn, but both were long gone now, reducing them to the path of restless wanderers.
Have you ever heard of the Kings of The Past, Viv?
She shook her head 'no', but, to reinforce the message, Varinka also said, "Nuh uh." Raziel continued, talking about the kings of the lion prides. "There sure are a lot...," the tigon thought. It was not surprising, but it was fascinating nonetheless, seeing as visual map of the generations of ancestors who had lived on earth. It was a pity that, with time, some tales were lost or mangled, but, at least, they were there to pass on.
Then, he'd look at me with this....I don't know, this expectation. As if even though he wasn't a king, he thought I should be. That I needed to be. Or, at least I should make it up there with the great kings somehow, someday.
An interesting turn...
But who am I kidding...I'm not a king. And I'm honestly not sure that I ever will be...
Very interesting turn indeed. He had never mentioned this before. "Do you want to be? A king, I mean." Varinka asked, lilac eyes remaining focused on the sky, "I imagine it takes a lot of moxy to lead an entire group and we both know you have much moxy." she smirked then got serious again, "But I don't see why it wouldn't be possible." It took more than guts to be a ruler. All things considered, he could pull it off. With the right planning and organization anyway...

- Do you want to be? A King, I mean.
The tigon asked Raziel, and for once he didn’t have an instant answer. The silence lingered between the two for a moment or two as flashes of past and present flung themselves through the lion’s mind. Images of him as a cub, standing with his father and looking over at the king, who was also walking through the jungles with his own son beside him. Another disappointed look from his father; another flash, as the king’s jaws as he let out a roar. Flashes to more grasslands, with figures of lions in the distance with enough power to keep him constantly on the move. Even their distant figures demanded the attention of all. The power they had was undeniable...this power…would he like it?
“Yes!” He started off with a careful enthusiasm. It wasn’t a half second later when his face turned into a slight frown. “No. I don’t know. I really don’t.” He continuted his gaze at the Kings of the Past, wondering if they, too, had ever had doubts about becoming a king.
I imagine it takes a lot of moxy to lead an entire group and we both know you have much moxy. Raziel laughed at the tigon’s comment, immediately lightening his heart. For a brief moment, they heavy stuff was gone. Even if it was just for a moment, these ones were the ones he cherished the most.
“Right.” He agreed with Varinka, a laugh still in his voice. “I’m so going to walk up to the next lion I see and tell him that I have moxy. He’ll have no choice but to hand over his kingdom! Why didn’t I think of that?” He joked, although he did realize that he would need courage and initiative to become a king.
But I don't see why it wouldn't be possible.
Varinka added, always the optimist.
“It’s just…so many kings are raised from birth, trained their entire lives to become these lions we still remember to this day.” He eventually said, gesturing with his paw to the starlit sky. “Some are hand-chosen by the current kings to succeed them, and they spend years preparing for it. And how could I even compare to that? I’m not a prince. I never was. No lion ever showed an interest in me as a future king. Most of the time, they hardly gave me a second look.”

She figured this might the response. Though Varinka wouldn't want all that attention, the tigon was a common attraction, thanks to her genes. The latte stripes across her body drew eyes filled with confusion and amazement, making her increasingly uncomfortable the longer the stares went on.
Meanwhile, Raz couldn't help, but attempt a grand entrance wherever he went. These miniature displays may have gone unnoticed to others, but she couldn't help herself. The sheer confidence in his actions pulled her to him, whether he knew it or not. She admired this trait greatly and the lion's engaging character added to his charm.
No. I don’t know. I really don’t.
The sudden switch in attitude threw her off, but she ultimately paid it no mind. There was no such thing as someone being completely sure of themselves or having the same demeanor 24/7. She'd have been worried if he didn't show an ounce of uncertainty, assuming he was lying again to put on a brave face.
Right...I’m so going to walk up to the next lion I see and tell him that I have moxy. He’ll have no choice but to hand over his kingdom! Why didn’t I think of that?
"Well, if you're going to do it that way," following up his sarcasm with some of her own, "You should, at least, make sure he has a kingdom first. It would be a shame to go through all that, then find out he's not even a king." She grinned at him mischievously, then laughed aloud. It was a happy, youthful sound that fit her well and echoed in the night.
It’s just…so many kings are raised from birth, trained their entire lives to become these lions we still remember to this day...Some are hand-chosen by the current kings to succeed them, and they spend years preparing for it. And how could I even compare to that? I’m not a prince. I never was. No lion ever showed an interest in me as a future king. Most of the time, they hardly gave me a second look.
As he explained his concerns, another question popped in her head. "So you're telling me that ALL of these trained leaders were remembered in a untarnished, blemish-free light? Talk about your high standards..." It was a lot to live up to and Varinka could now see why he saw it as near impossible.

- Well, if you're going to do it that way. You should, at least, make sure he has a kingdom first. It would be a shame to go through all that, then find out he's not even a king.
Raziel considered her comment for a moment or two. “Yeah. You’re right. What would I do then? Bow to him, and say ‘Greetings, mighty king of this beautiful kingdom.’” The faintly-spotted lion laughed along with Varinka. He put on his best miniature bow and placed a paw on his chest for a brief moment, giving his best utterly-flattered-to-be-in-a-king's-presence look. “If they respond,I guess they’re the king. Either that, or they’d be too flattered to drive me away. It’s a win-win.” He emphasized, returning to a sitting position.
“Or,” He started, shaking his mane to the side get rid of a few small twigs clinging to his mane. “I could always challenge them to a fight for the role.” He glanced over at Varinka, then back at himself. He compared their sizes for a moment, before adding on—“Well, you could.” He laughed, realizing that Varinka would definitely be a better challenger than him. If she put her mind to it, she could take on every king from here to the other end of Africa.
“They’d probably look at me and think, ‘You’ve got to be kidding.’” Raz said, glancing down at his smaller paws. Compared to the tigon next to him, his were pretty tiny. He doubted he could hold his own in a fight against another lion larger than him.
So you're telling me that ALL of these trained leaders were remembered in a untarnished, blemish-free light? Talk about your high standards...
“Actually, no. You’d be surprised as to how many Kings are disliked, even to this day. I know some of their stories better than the ‘perfect’ leaders. Their stories can be just as interesting. In fact, I liked them even better.” He said, the corners of his mouth turning up in a smirk of sorts. He always liked a story with a villian. It always made things so much more…interesting.
“Still, though. Fighting for a kingdom is out of the question.” He affirmed. While Varinka was no doubt strong, even Raziel knew that she couldn’t take on an entire pride of angered lionesses, especially considering that he couldn’t take on one. “Whenever that happens, the lioness just plot revenge and turn on you. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be killed in my sleep. “ He shuddered slightly, making a disgusted face.

...If they respond, I guess they’re the king. Either that, or they’d be too flattered to drive me away. It’s a win-win.
"True," she admitted, "You attract more ants with honey than with dung," a pause, "But then you'll attract flies...Either way, you will attract something, though I'm not sure which is better in that case. Both seem lose-lose to me." Whoever came up with that expression didn't think it through very well. That or it didn't really apply to the example. What were they talking about again? Her mind went off task, pondering the saying, and had lost track of the point she had been trying to make.
When he brought up the option of fighting, Varinka fiercely shook her head 'no'. Challenging someone to a fight sounded foolish, especially if it was over a sense of pride or for mere bragging rights. She'd only fight if there was no other choice, no escape or for defending a friend.
They’d probably look at me and think, ‘You’ve got to be kidding.'
She shrugged, not wanting to agree with that, but thinking it held some truth unfortunately. Raz didn't have a muscular form, but all of that could be built up if he worked on it. He'd always be smaller in height, but that carried advantages. Also, swinging jaws and swiping claws wasn't the key to winning. Plans, like in everything else, were important tools then, too. So he could win, with the right preparation that is.
Actually, no. You’d be surprised as to how many Kings are disliked, even to this day...Whenever that happens, the lioness just plot revenge and turn on you. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be killed in my sleep.
"But," she replied, sincerely, "You see? They had the birthright, with earlier training sessions and numerous allies, but did something entirely wrong by the end, making all of that worthless. So what's stopping you?" another space, "You have a friend, so all that's left is training. You can teach yourself to be royalty, just like cubs can teach themselves how to hunt." Yes, discipline to practice and a willingness to learn were crucial elements in such a quest, but, again, that was the way everything went. Only question was if Raz had both of these in him? Would he do whatever was needed to complete his goal?

- “Well, at least with flies you can shoo them away! Ants just crawl all over you.” Raz responded, giving a quick flick with his paw as if to flick off a pesky bug. Varinka’s take on things certainly seemed different than his. Where he saw good things coming out of a situation, she only saw bad. At least in this case, she was right. A lot of attention probably wouldn’t be the best idea when trying to go unnoticed. He filed this away, remembering to ask Varinka before he did anything flashy or attention-getting.
“Was that a shrug of agreement?” Raziel lightly accused, glancing over at Varinka. A smile was still on his lips, though. He honestly couldn’t blame the tigon for agreeing with his comment. He’d been short his entire life, and was used to making fun of himself about it. Besides, it occasionally came in handy, especially when he needed to slip away or make a tight escape.
But, you see? They had the birthright, with earlier training sessions and numerous allies, but did something entirely wrong by the end, making all of that worthless. So what’s stopping you?
Varinka questioned him, a surprising passion in her voice. Raziel could not remember the last time she’d been so adamant and enthusiastic about something. She must really think that he could—no, should be a king.
“Honestly, I hadn’t even thought of it until tonight.” He said, knowing it was a lame and somewhat obvious excuse. Generally, when one wanted to make a lie seem ‘believeable’, they’d stick in words like ‘honestly’ to make others believe he was honest. He knew this wouldn’t work with Varinka. “Nah, I’m just kidding. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought about it before, but I've never had any ideas. It’s all so complicated, this royalty stuff. It’s no wonder so many leaders end up the way they do.”
You have a friend,
Raziel nodded vigirously at this. He did indeed have a friend in Varinka. There was no doubt at all there. They’d been close since the moment they met, practically.
…so all that's left is training. You can teach yourself to be royalty, just like cubs can teach themselves how to hunt.
“But,” He started, “How am I supposed to teach myself to be royalty? No one around here is a king or queen, unless you’ve been keeping secrets from me, Viv.” He smiled, imaging a princess version of Varinka. That would be a sight to see.
