• Kitara didn't want to go to the watering hole that evening.

She'd whined and protested and struggled against the gang of lionesses, certain that they were all teaming up on her just to make her life miserable. She'd eventually consented, but only after being dragged off of her butt and threatened to be dragged the entire way there. That wouldn't do.

So here she was, sitting and the water's edge with a visible scowl across her face. A few drops of water slipped off of her nose. Surprisingly enough, the little lioness had been thirsty. Just a tiny bit though. Nothing she would have needed to be dragged to the watering hole for.

She glanced back at the lionesses, who were all midleg-deep into the water, lapping it up and chattering to themselves. She looked around again, making certain that none of them were paying any attention to her. Not like there was anything new there. She was used to being overlooked. In fact, in times like these she didn't mind it at all.

She backed out of the water's bank and hoisted herself up and into the grasses. The cub pulled her body closer to the ground, walking as quickly as possible while continuing to stare over her shoulder. She didn't even notice the pale lioness, before crashing into her, the force of it sending her tumbling beneath the lioness' legs..

"Oh." Kita said, \shaking her head and pulling herself out from under Orrin.

Orrin had been on her way to the watering hole to join the other lionesses and enjoy listening to them talk about the goings-on in the pride. She had been distracted though, trying to think of what more she could do for a young lioness who had been hurt on a hunt.

She had already cleaned the wounds sufficiently and applied a mixture of herbs to ward off infection, but she always felt there was more to be done. As she thought, the lioness had been staring towards the sky, also pondering about the next few days' weather and how that would affect the hunting.

She nearly lost her balance when she felt something bump against her legs and roll beneath her. She peered curiously between her front paws and smiled fondly when she saw a cub there.

"Careful now."Orrin said kindly. She recognized the cub, but could not think of her name."Now, who do you belong to?"

  • As the cub pulled herself to her feet, she took a good look at the towering lioness, not at all intimidated by her height or stature.

Careful now. She said in a nice voice. Almost too nice, if you asked Kita. She'd heard voices like hers nonstop since she'd arrived at the pridelands--mothers acting like they cared, even though they already had their own cubs to look after...

"Why'd you run into me?" Kita started, standing up and looking the lioness right in the eye. She hadn't actually met this lioness face to face before. She hadn't had any major injuries, either, so hadn't had a need to meet the Prideland's shaman.

Now, who do you belong to?

"Why does that matter?" Kitara grumbled, this time looking down and away from the cream lioness.

"Why'd you run into me?" Orrin's eyes flicked slightly as the cub met her eyes. She seemed to ignore the words a moment as she made sure the cub was alright and helped her stand.

"I didn't."She said finally."I suppose neither of us were watching where we were going."

Orrin gave Kita a smile, only to have it slip from her face as the cub snappily retorted to her previous question. "It matters because you really shouldn't be too far from your family members." Orrin answered."Now tell me,little one, who is your mother, and what is your name?"

  • Kitara shook off the helping paw of the shaman, taking a few steps away to get her distance from the lioness. This way, if she would be ready IF she felt like she would need to make a break for it.

I didn't. I suppose neither of us were watching where we were going. Kita snorted at this, rolling her eyes as if to say, yeah, right. She kept looking at the lioness's face, searching for some, for any emotion.

Wait. There it was. The brown cub saw it right there, fading from her face as she spoke. The fading smile. Proof that she hadn't been--and wasn't happy. She'd been pretending the entire time. Kita's slight frown edged deeper.

It matters because you really shouldn't be too far from your family members.

The lioness said with fake sympathy. In the cub's eyes, this was just another way for the lioness to get rid of her. Sending her back to her 'family.' Like she would call them that.

"Yeah? Well, you should have tried telling them that." She snapped back, her mother and father's faces briefly flashing up in her memory.

Now tell me, little one, who is your mother, and what is your name?

"Nishi." Kita started again, after another pause. "That was my mother's name. I'm Kitara."

Orrin instantly felt sorry she had said anything about family as Kita answered her. She remembered the cub's story now, how her desperate parents had come to the Pridelands, begging for the pride to take in their cub. Orrin sighed.

"Forgive me, Kita."She said softly."I did not realize..."She trailed off, unsure what else to say.Orrin started to think again, wondering what she could do for this cub. obviously, she was upset over the fact that her family had simply left her here, and must've been feeling somewhat unwanted, despite the pride's best efforts.

"Why don't you come with me?"Orrin suggested. "If you like, you may stay with me until you find someone to care for you."

  • Forgive me, Kita.

The lioness said, apparently deciding that she could use Kitara's nickname even though the two had just met. Her ear flicked slightly; she wasn't used to hearing that name. Usually, it was just a loud KITARA by one of the lionesses looking around for her.

Why don't you come with me? Orrin offered, but Kita looked away again. Didn't she know that it didn't matter? All of the lionesses slept in the same place, after all. Was this just another excuse for her to take her back to the majority of the pride?

"It doesn't matter. You all sleep in the same spot anyways." She said with a slight grumble. She didn't even bother answering the lioness's last sentence. There was no use getting her hopes up. She'd become used to getting let down.

"It doesn't matter. You all sleep in the same spot anyways."

Orrin shook her head at the cub's naivety."Most of the time we do."She answered."But occasionally, I do enjoy spending a night in the Tree of Life. Or sometimes I spend it there for others' sakes.A lioness was injured on last night's hunt, and so tonight, I will pray to the Great Kings to keep her with us."

Orrin smiled again."It can be rather interesting to watch, and occasionally, something ....magical happens."

She looked skyward then back to Kitara."So I ask you again, would you like to come along? If nothing else, I will allow you to paint a little on the tree."

  • I do enjoy spending a night in the Tree of Life.

The lioness said, referring to the tree that was said to have once held crazy monkeys that beat lions with sticks. At least, that was what some of the mothers liked to whisper to their cubs as they walked by the great tree. While everyone knew that the shaman of the pride frequently lived there, these tales at least helped keep overly-curious cubs from wandering over and bothering the shaman.

"Why?" She said disdainfully."You don't look sick to me." She was still completely unaware of Orrin's actual position within the pride.

Or sometimes I spend it there for others' sakes.A lioness was injured on last night's hunt, and so tonight, I will pray to the Great Kings to keep her with us

The cub didn't know how to respond to that. Why was she so intent on staying in the tree tonight, if she wasn't the shaman? Kita logged this information back in her mind, now certain that even if she went, she'd probably be ignored by the lioness. She'd be too busy 'praying to the great kings' to even remember that she was there.

It can be rather interesting to watch, and occasionally, something ....magical happens.

So she'd only be watching? Hmmph. That wasn't too interesting. Kita considered saying no and running back to the lioness gang, but that was before Orrin looked back at her.

So I ask you again, would you like to come along? If nothing else, I will allow you to paint a little on the tree.

Kita's entire face lit up at this, the frown she'd been carrying now vanished. "Really?" She said with disbelief, part of her sure that this was some sort of joke on her.

"Really?"

Orrin smiled as she saw Kitara's face and she nodded."Yes, of course."She said."Besides, I do get very lonely up there sometimes."

The pale lioness stepped around Kitara and took a few steps ahead before she glanced over her shoulder, smiling cheerily."If you are coming, little one, you must keep up.

Orrin took off, running at a medium pace through the grass, purposely keeping her pace so that the cub could follow easily.

  • Besides, I do get very lonely up there sometimes

The cub's eyes stayed on the light lioness's pelt, tracking her as she moved around her carefully. A few thoughts raced through her mind. How could she ever be lonely in the great big tree? Wasn't she just talking about the kings of the past? Surely they weren't that depressing to be in the presence of.

Before she could say anything else, the lioness broke into a run. Kitara didn't move for half of a moment, slightly torn. But, before she could think it through too far, she went sprinting after the lioness.

"But what about the monkeeeys?" She called to her in a worried tone.

Orrin laughed as the cub started to follow her, and then slowed down a little more, not wanting the young one to get lost.

"What about the monkeeeys?"

Orrin turned her head."Don't worry about them."She replied with her kind smile."The monkeys do not bother the Tree of Life. They understand that it is sacred, not a place for them to sleep and play.Besides, it's not as if they would hurt you if they were there."

Kitara's eyebows and face furrowed in confusion. What this lioness was saying didn't match up to what she knew at all! Since when were the monkey there nice and respectful? That didn't make sense at all! Not to mention the part about the monkeys not hurting them.

"But wait." She said, her dragging tone a clear sign of her confusion. She kept on running through the grasses, jumping forward occasionally just for the fun of it. "They told us that there were all sorts of mean mokeys living there that might hit us with long sticks if we went into there and weren't sick!" Kita exclaimed, unaware that this tale originally developed from one of the previous shamans of the pride, an old monkey by the name of Rafiki.

Orrin couldn't help but chuckle at this. At least the lionesses were teaching cubs that they should not play around the great Tree. She shook her head.

"Let me explain, child."She stated, tone gentle."This is nothing but a cub's tale. The monkey that you are speaking of was a former Shaman. He lived in the tree in the time of King Mufasa, until the time of King Kovu."She watched the cub for any signs of further confusion before continuing on.

"You speak of him hitting lions with a stick, this only happened once, to young King Simba, to make a point to him."Orrin grinned at the cub. "There is nothing to be afraid of in that tree."

  • Kita was genuinely surprised at Orrin. Usually,by this time, the lionesses gave up on trying to reason with her nicely, and just bossed her around, giving her no say in the matter whatsoever.

    Let me explain, child.

The shaman started. Kita's ear flinched. She hated that word, and hated the way anyone older than her used it. Always when they were about to lie to her face, always when the treated her as if she didn't have a brain of her own.

This is nothing but a cub's tale. The monkey that you are speaking of was a former Shaman. He lived in the tree in the time of King Mufasa, until the time of King Kovu.

She continued, confirming yet another one of Kitara's fears. Adults always used those words whenever they tried to explain anything to her, like it was some great burden she wouldn't understand anyways because she was 'just a cub.'

Her annoyance grew even more once she found out that the lionesses had been lying though their teeth at her.

You speak of him hitting lions with a stick, this only happened once, to young King Simba, to make a point to him.

"Then why didn't they just tell me that?" She said in a slightly raised voice, now a little bit angry. "Why can't they just tell us to stay out?"

"...and why did he hit King Simba with that stick in the first place?" She questioned after another moment, wondering what the ancient king could have done to make a shaman of the pridelands that angry.
