"Then why didn't they just tell me that? Why can't they just tell us to stay out?"

"It is simple."Orrin continued."Mothers often find the need to tell cubs stories because it helps the imagination grow, and because the tales often teach morals or contain warnings."

"And why did he hit King Simba with that stick in the first place?"

"Because he....perhaps it would be better to explain the lesson he was teaching instead."Orrin decided. She sat down and began to speak again."You see, King Simba was tryiong to run away from his past, because what had happened in his past had hurt him emotionally. So, wise Rafiki, that is the monkey's name, hit him. When Simba asked him why, Rafiki explained to him that why didn't matter. because it was in the past, and even though it did hurt, he could either learn from what happened, or try to run away.Do you understand?"

  • The cub flinched a little bit internally as the shaman mentioned the word mother yet again. This time, she was sure that this must be some sort of insult to her mother, the way she explained that mothers often tell their cubs stories, implying that there must be something wrong with the cub if her mother didn't tell her stories.

"My mother just told me about stuff like that. She just didn't want to waste any time on stupid stories." Kita said a little darkly and a little defensively, a part of her still trying to defend her mother even though she and her father were long gone.

"And yeah, I get it." The cub said, a little more brightly. Now, the lioness's earlier comment made a lot more sense. However, Kitara refused to acknowledge that the shaman had just sneaked in a little story of her own right after she'd just made fun of them.

"And are we almost there?" Kitara said with a slight whine, continuing to keep up a tumbling run next to Orrin.

My mother just told me about stuff like that. She just didn't want to waste any time on stupid stories.

"Think what you will of the old tales."Orrin replied."I simply think that they are a good way to teach and a good way to entertain." She had to admit this cub certainly wasn't like the others, she was outspoken, saying what she felt.Orrin couldn't help but admire that.

"And are we almost there?"

Oh how she dislikes whining. However, she knew it was how cubs got what they wanted and so decided it would be easier to just answer her."Nearly.We are nearly within the tree's shadow."

Within minutes, they had arrived.Orrin hung back a little, analysing the tree with her eyes. Suddenly, she rocketed from where she was standing and launched herself at the tree's trunk, clinging to it with her claws and starting to climb. Once she got herself up on a branch, she looked back down at Kitara.

"Coming, little one?"

  • Nearly. We are nearly within the tree's shadow.

"But wait!" Kitara called after Orrin, scanning the ground but seeing no shadow whatsoever. Being lower to the ground, she had a hard time seeing that far ahead in tall grass like the stuff they were walking in right then. "How does a tree have a shadow at night?"

She kept jumping after the shaman's legs, keeping a lookout for this mysterious shadow. When Orrin suddenly stopped, so did the cub. She stuck her head up as far as she could, just in time to see the lioness jump up into...the tree? So that where it was!

Coming. little one? The shaman called down. Was that even a valid question? Kita was entirely tempted to yell back something along the lines of "oh no, I'll just walk home now thanks"

She scrambled up to the base of the tree, jumping up and clinging onto the trunk. It wasn't long before she pulled herself up and onto the nearest branch, looking up at Orrin to see what was next. [/color]

Orrin smiled as Kitara managed to pull herself up into the tree's great branches.Without another word, she walked along the branch she was perched on, heading for the heart of the tree.

Great thick branches extended upward from the tree's heart, reaching up to the sky. extending up from the bases of the branches were a great many pictures. Some were of lion cubs, others of suns and symbols. There were the prints of strange, hand-like paws, as well as the prints of a couple of lions.

The pale lioness turned to the young cub."You see, Kitara. This is our history. Each of these symbols means something, some represent stories, while others refer to events. And these..."She placed her front paws on one of the branches, causing her to stand on her hind legs. She placed her paw over one of the lion prints."These represent all the shamans of the past."She moved her paw, smiling."As you can see, this is mine."

Kitara craned her neck back, staring up into the endless branches of the trees. Above her, she could see patches of stars through the leaves, and she even caught a glimpse of a cloud here and there.

"Wow." She said in awe, dragging it out a little bit. The cub pulled her head back down until she was glancing at Orrin. She jumped up a little bit, placing her front two paws on the trunk of the tree. She stared directly ahead now, studying the picture drawn between her paws. An orange lioness figure was painted onto the trunk, one that the cub didn't recognize.

You see, Kitara. This is our history. Each of these symbols means something, some represent stories, while others refer to events. And these...

Kita's body shook slightly, sending her paws sliding down the tree slightly. Orrin had decided to do the same thing as she had, practically standing on her back legs. She leaned over a little bit, attempting to get a better look at Orrin's pawprint.

"Wow!" She said again, and with just as much wonder. "It fits perfectly!" She stared at the pawprints scattered up the tree, and gradually made her way back to her spot.

"But who's this?" She asked, her eyebrows furrowing in confusion. Part of her was still curious, eager to figure out the mysteries of these past lions.

Orrin smiled as she dropped down and sat back, watching the cub's wonder."It fits perfectly!"

The lioness chuckled warmly."Indeed it does. But why shouldn't it?"She asked."It is mine after all, just as my paw is mine."

"But who is this?"

Orrin looked at the prints that Kitara was investigating."Well, those specific prints belong to my predecessor, Alma. She had been Shaman quite a long time,I think. She had so much gray in her coat by the time I replaced her, she was nearly white."

"Wow!" Kita exclaimed again, bouncing over to Orrin. She paused, looking at her paw, and then looking back at the painting. "Do it again!" The cub said, fascinated by this small detail. She wished she could have a pawprint up on the tree someday! Then she could stand there and match up her paw with it all day long.

She gazed in fascination for a few more moments before jumping up onto a branch that was slightly closer to the lioness painting. "I like her." Kitara said, an unusual occourence. There were few lions that she took a liking to...and more often than not they turned into dislikings. "Does being a shaman make your fur turn white?" She asked, studying the painting intently. It was strange, the lioness pictured here didn't look all that white to her.

Orrin laughed softly at the cub's amusement at her paw fitting the print. For her sake, the pale lioness stood again and placed her paw over the print. She was pleased that the cub actually found the details and tales of the tree interesting.

"Does being a shaman make your fur turn white?"

Orrin shook her head."No. Great age makes your fur go white."She answered."Some believe that the reason shamans seem to live so long is because of the good favour they keep with the great kings. In return, the kings grant them as much time on this earth to find one to succeed us.Alma died shortly after my training was complete."

She stared at the painting with a sort of sad fondness."She was a magnificent teacher, patient and kind."

Kitara stared at Orrin for a moment or two, gauging her fur color in comparison to the fur color on her shaman painting. Her brows furrowed slightly. "You must not be that old, then." She said, matter-of-factly. If she was old, then her fur must be white, not sorta-pale, like it was right now.

"How do the kings do that? Do they tell you?" Kitara said, briefly glancing up between the branches of the trees. She'd heard mentions of kings and queens in the stars, but didn't know much more than that. It was all a mystery to the cub. "I don't see how they can talk to you." She added on, completely mystified.

Kita's eyes widened at Orrin's comment about Alma's death. "Does that mean if you had an apprentice and she finished, you'd die?" She was a bit concerned about this. After all, Orrin was the first lioness that had actually spent time with the cub, and not been about to kill her.

"I wish I couldn't met her." Kitara said, glancing back once again at the painting on the tree. "She sounds nice."

"You must not be that old then."

"I am not."Orrin answered."I'm still fairly young, not quite to the point where my bones and muscles ache daily, but far past the time of spending my days playing."

Orrin watched as Kitara looked skyward, almost as if she expected the spirits of the past to appear. She remembered her own cubhood, her thirst for knowledge about the shamans wisdom and about the pride's history.

"How do the kings do that?Do they tell you?"

"They leave it to us to discover."Orrin replied."What I meant was, they allow us to live until there is someone to replace us. They do not tell us when they will come or who they are."

Her ears twitched slightly as Kitara asked about how the kings spoke. "There are spirits all around us.In the water, the grass, the wind, the sky. They all speak if you listen. The wind whistling through the grass, the ripples in the water, they can all be messages, if one knows how to read them. Other times, the spirits send dreams in which they themselves appear." She thought back to try and think of an example.

"Have you heard of the long drought a few seasons back?"

"But your fur's still white-ish." Kitara said, wondering just how old Orrin could be. She definitely didn't seem old, and from what she'd just told the cub, she wasn't old at all. So why was her fur so pale?

"And how do you know when you've discovered it?" She continued to ask, wondering just what could be given by the Kings of the Past, and just how one could find it. Soon enough, though, the shaman answered her question before she'd hardly even asked it.

There are spirits all around us.In the water, the grass, the wind, the sky. They all speak if you listen.

"I'm listening." Kita said, and cupped a paw to her ear with an intense concentration. Her ears swiveled back in forth in an attempt to hear something, anything. All she could hear was the slight wind up higher in the tree.

"But I don't hear anything. So how do you read the messages?" She wondered, staring back up at Orrin. There was so much she didn't understand about shamans...

Have you heard of the long drought a few seasons back?

'Yes, of course I have." Kitara affirmed, although she couldn't say she was ever a part of it. "Whenever I get thirsty the lionesses always say it's nothing compared to 'that drought'."

"Yes,my fur is pale."Orrin replied."But I was born with it being this color. My mother before me was pale as well, but my father was darker, and that is why I am not as pale as she, I assume."

The pale lioness thought for a moment, trying to find an answer. How did one find one's successor? "I suppose that, when the Shaman finds someone who is just as devoted to the pride, just as willing to learn and just as caring of others as she and is worth training, that is how you know."

Orrin shook her head as Kitara tried to listen to the spirits."It's not as simple as that."She said."You must let the spirits' essence flood you, feel them around and inside of you.The messages are often simply emotions that are felt when you are aware of the spirits, other times, as I said, they will grant you visions."

"The lionesses are quite right."Orrin answered."That drought was terrible, and it brought me great sadness to have to be the one to warn the king.So many questions were asked of me, and I could answer non eof them. Most of the pride believed me to be lying, until the water disappeared. Many died that season."

"Oh." Kita said, a bit of understanding appearing. It made sense that Orrin's mom would have been lighter, and her father a little bit darker. So she would be right in the middle! "So you weren't just born old then. Okay." She said, her tone a bit brighter at the end.

"So when do you think you'll find the next shaman?" Kitara asked, returning her attention to Orrin. "I don't want you to just die." She said, a slight bit of concern seeping through. It wasn't any outright show of emotion, but it was true that she would be a little sad of Orrin just dropped dead in the near future.

In response to Orrin's words on the spirits, Kitara scrunched her eyes up as tightly as she could. Her ears continued to swivel back and forth, attempting to pick up even the slightest of sounds. She attempted to feel these spirits the shaman talked about, trying to feel even the slightest sign that that there was anything out there. So far, nothing...but then again, the cub might have been trying too hard.

"So if you knew that there was a drought, why didn't they believe you?" Kita questioned. In her eyes, if a shaman told them about something in advance, it seemed like the rest of the lions should take her seriously.

Orrin laughed at that."No, I was not born old.I've never heard of such a thing!"She continued to laugh for a few more seconds before the sound died away.Orrin had a pleasant laugh, like the sound of water shifting when a paw moved through it.

"I don't know."Orrin answered truthfully."But I doubt it will be for a long time yet. Not until long after you are grown, provided I do not die of some terrible sickness."She smiled at the cub showing some manner of caring for her."Well, thank you. I hope you don't just die either."

"You must be calm."Orrin advised as she watched Kitara continue to try to make contact with the spirits."You must be relaxed and at ease and peace with the world. Almost like when you're falling asleep."

The pale lioness' ears flattened slightly in despair as her charge inquired further about the drought."I ask myself the same thing every time I think of those who lost their lives."She sighed."i suppose though, it was because I was young, new to my post, and they simply did not wish to believe what I said was true."
