It was evening. The sky was a rich shade of purple, but not dark enough for all the stars to shine their lights yet. Firo, the Tawi cub, had spent the entire day exploring the forest and at around the mid afternoon, had found himself wondering along the border between the Tawi Pride and the Magabali Pride. He proceeded to spend the next hour pacing back and forth deciding whether to cross it or not. He had no mother nor father, and his young pride sisters and brothers won't mind too much. They were all kids afterall. That was why he loved it being a Tawi. There was no one on your back saying what he can and cannot do. He did whatever he want.

Determined, the golden spotted cub jumped across the border cautiously and ventured on. The grass was becoming scarce and so were the trees. Soon there were large boulders that made up the bulk of the landscape. It made him uncomfortable. He was used to the covers and shadows of trees, and the openness of this land made him edgy. Firo kept to the parts of the ground where there were still grass, the only familar feature in this strange land. The cub was aware he was in dangerous territory. He had heard stories of the Magabali Pride - fierce warriors they were. Which was why he kept the Tawi Forest within his sight the whole time. He was always within running distance back to his pride's borders. He sniffed around, definitely noticing the recent scent of lions.

So this was the Kilimanjaro Range that he had so much about. It took him quite awhile to get here, the afternoon was waning, but it was worth it. Vivu looked on in awe as his eyes measured the mountain and the gorge. It was absolutely breathtaking. It was times like this he was glad he left the desert, the climate was much cooler, it felt nice on his fur.

After what seemed like hours, Vivu finally took his eyes off the Kilimanjaro and turned his head to notice the Tawi forest. Somehow, his eyes grew even wider. "So that's a for-est..." he uttered, resting on his hind legs. Now that was a sight to behold. The lush green trees and blades of grass were something he thought he'd never get over. He would never forget today, no matter what.

It was then that he noticed movement in the grass, and saw a tail that could only belong to a lion. Another encounter with his own species, it would prove to be quite an experience. Vivu saw just how diverse the behavior of lions were. What the vultures referred to as personality, it was a fascinating thing.

Vivu leapt from the boulders and landed quietly on the ground below. Brushing his tuft from his eyes, Vivu looked towards the cub. Though he was a good distance away, he could notice he still had his spots. He hoped he hadn't startled him, he had so much he wanted to ask him.

Firo nosed the scattered grasses a bit more. The scent of the Majabali lions were similar but also very different. The more he entered the territory, the more edgy he became. What if they discovered him? What would they do to him? Would the fierce mountain lions eat him? Rip him apart with one claw? Or worse, cubnap him to a place with no trees whatsoever?

He straightened up suddenly, hearing a noise. Firo looked around and saw the Tawi Forest in the distance, though further than he had thought. That's not good. It was then that he sensed another presence among the rocks. He was not alone. The spotted cub felt his stomach drop when he saw the other golden cub in the distance. He was large and skinny. The eyes below his hair tuft was unmistakable - he was definitely glaring at Firo. The stranger must be a Majabali! He considered running, but the lanky cub looked like he had longer legs than he had. So he stood his ground, deciding that if he was going to die, he would die fighting.

'Who are you?' he shouted across the rocks

Vivu could tell that the cub was worried. Natural, he was a pretty intimidating cub. He was the infamous Griffon of the desert afterall. Obviously, scaring the cub would prevent him from having the conversation he desired. So he thought it best to try and calm his fellow cub. As he made his way towards the cub, he answered back "Fear not. I am not your enemy." he had to force himself not to pronounce it as ene-my. "I am Vivu." he answered, giving the cub a name to go on.

Making his way through what boulders remained, the forest became more clearer. Staring at the tall trees in awe, Vivu had to ask, "What is this place?" the rasp in his voice ever present. It was written on his face that he had never seen a forest in his life. To an adult, it would've come across as cute. The buzzard lion saw that this cub was a bit smaller than he was, all the more reason he was afraid. Normally, he wouldn't have minded this, but his appearance was starting to impede his progress socially. It's difficult to make friends when you look like death...

Firo was pawsteps away from bolting from the other cub. The stranger definitely had an unfriendly look about him. When the cub spoke, however, Firo heard sincerity behind his voice. The spotted cub paused, undecided. As Vivu turned to look at the forest, Firo tilted his head to the side in puzzle. 'It is the Tawi Forest of course,' he said, suspiciously. 'You don't know about it?' Are you new to these parts?'

Obviously he was, otherwise he would have heard of the Tawi Pride - was Firo's opinion. He had spent his whole life in the forest and it was unheard of that anyone would be oblivious to the place. The cub saw Vivu's gash and quickly realised he was staring. Though still suspicious, he no longer felt the need to run. Firo reckon he could take this cub on if the need arose. And it was clear that the lion was not a Majabali either because certainly they would know about the Tawi Forest. 'I'm Firo,' he said, pawing the ground to work up a little cloud of dust. 'And I'm a Tawan.'

"Firo..." Vivu said to himself, training his tongue to memorize it. "Firo... a strong name." he complimented, giving a nod in Firo's direction. There was something about Firo's presence that Vivu liked. He couldn't tell whether it was the cub's bravery or that liked his spots, either way he was doing well. The lanky cub watched with interest as Firo's cloud of dust moved away.

Vivu, under the impression that it was a form of greeting, scraped up a dust cloud of his own. "Again, I am Vivu, and I am a buzzard lion." he replied in brutally casual manner, if anyone else had said that, it would've been hilarious. He realized it was pointless to hide his nature, subtlety was never his strength. So, Vivu attempted to clear up the confusion now, rather than later. Of course, what he said would probably lead to more confusion...

As Vivu turned his attention to the trees. he felt Firo staring at him, specifically his scar. It was quite the battle scar, in fact... "battle scar." Answering Firo before he asked.

"Tawi forest," he repeated, almost zoning out. Quickly, he snapped himself back into the conversation."You will have to excuse me," he said with a hint of embarrassment, "I... have never seen a forest before in my life, or a tree for that matter." he revealed, knowing that this would come as a shock to the other cub. In all fairness, Firo had probably never been in a desert in his life, so he thought it all evened out.

Firo looked at the ground when Vivu made a cloud of dust lift into the air. Odd. Maybe he had accessed some kind of greeting from wherever Vivu came from. The hiss in the cub's speech was unmistakable - he was not local. Then the question begged, where did he come from?

'Nice to meet you Vivu ... the buzzard lion,' Firo replied. 'Does that mean you can fly?'

The spotted cub couldn't help but drop his jaw. 'Never seen a tree? Where do you come from that doesn't have a tree? I have never heard of such a place!' Firo thought it best not to comment on his 'battle scar'. It didn't seem polite and the Tawan cub did not want to offend the stranger. Vivu was strange, yes, but Firo thought he was alright. He had a strange feeling that he had met him somewhere before. Perhaps in a far away dream that he had long forgotten.

Vivu almost smiled when Firo asked him if he could fly. It reminded him of when his entire venue picked him up off the ground. They could only lift him up so high, but the experience was unbelievable. "Not on my own..." was Vivu's honest answer. "And you can just call me Vivu." he added. Vivu would've asked Firo about his spots, but he decided to leave the subject alone. He didn't speak about his scar, so Vivu wouldn't speak about his spots.

The fact that Firo had never seen or heard of a desert made Vivu smile. It lasted for all of a second, but that was more than enough for Firo to notice. "I used to live in the desert." he informed him, trusting Firo enough that he took a step forward. "So you are from, the Tawi pride? How is it?" He asked. He hadn't heard of that pride before, it must've been a new one.

Firo's ears perked as Vivu words implied that he had in fact flown before. The cub wondered how that was possible. Perhaps he ran off a cliff? He didn't know any lions who could fly. Perhaps one day, this strange cub can show him how.

'Oh the desert...,' Firo repeated, trailing off. He had never been there, but he had heard of it. How anyone can survive without a tree was beyond his comprehension. 'Well, the Tawi Pride lives in the forest. We're not that many, but we get by. It is a family of cubs and adolescents. Most of us stumbled upon the pride by accident and usually we don't know where our parents are.'

Firo noticed the ghost of the smile on Vivu's face and thought that he didn't do it very often as it looked slightly unnatural. The spotted cub climbed up onto a rock to see further into the Majabali territory, forever aware that if they were found by those lions, they'd be in big trouble. 'How about you? Your're not a Majabalian are you?'

From Firo's description, being a Tawi didn't sound so bad. He had lost his parents too, if fate had been so kind, he would've found this place. If that happened, then maybe... he would've had a nicer life. One that wasn't so full of death and bleakness. But no such luck. Vivu shook such thoughts away, he had a personal rule about not bothering with 'if only' scenarios.

But Vivu knew that if he stayed, he ran the risk of putting Firo and the other cubs in danger. True, he could try to protect them, but that would just make him the Griffon of Tawi Forest. Leading to the same scenario he was trying to escape from. Plus, he would only be putting Firo's life in danger. He wouldn't have that on his conscience. It struck him that he actually cared about the well being of a cub he had known for all of five minutes. 'Is this what the vultures referred to as friendship? Or was it brotherhood?' Vivu thought to himself.

"Me?" Vivu began, "No, I am not a Majabalian. Do I look like one?" Vivu managed to grin at the thought, he knew that the Majabalians were a pride full of warriors. Vivu was a natural fighter, so he could probably pass for one.

Firo paused and thought about Vivu's question. There was his smile again, a bit creepy but geniune. 'Well, I heard from my brothers and sisters that the mountain lions had thick fur and large muscles. Mind you they're not my real brotherS and sisters.'

The spotted cub jumped down from his rock and approached Vivu cautiously. Normally he wouldn't have done this but since the buzzard lion had asked, Firo felt he needed to make a full inspection to answer Vivu's question accurately. The cub stuck out his paw and jabbed Vivu's side, not too hard but enough to create a little dent from the pressure. Firo gazed at Vivu's eyes to see if he would react violently to this.

'You don't have thick fur. Nor do you have large muscles. You're quite skinny. I don't think you'd make a good Majabalian lion in appearance,' was Firo's honest assessment, unaware that any of his statements could cause potential offence to the other cub.

Vivu gave Firo a quizzical stare as he poked him in the side. Vivu wasn't angry at the gesture, just confused. Was he trying to get him to move or something? Vivu was about to ask him what he was doing, but before he could...

'You don't have thick fur. Nor do you have large muscles. You're quite skinny. I don't think you'd make a good Majabalian lion in appearance,'

Vivu let out an amused huff, "Em-phasis on, in appearance." he responded. Just because he didn't look like a Majabalian, didn't mean he couldn't fight like one; or better than. Vivu admired Firo's honesty, it was actually very vulture like. He analyzed and judged just as he and his venue would have. He was growing to like this cub, he brought out his better side.

"And I do not think you would either," as he nudged Firo somewhat playfully in the side. Vivu then paused and examined what he just did. Did he actually joke just now? Now that was weird. 'Is this considered normal lion behavior?' he wondered to himself.

Firo grinned at Vivu, sort of getting used to the strange accent that Vivu spoke with. The buzzard cub gave him a playful nudge. Firo smiled mischievously at the fact that Vivu didn't follow up his antics, leaving himself wide open. The Tawan leapt at Vivu's side, toppling him to the ground. The cub laughed. 'You're a good friend,' he said, happy that his venture into dangerous territory today was not fruitless.

It was nearing dark and far off an owl hooted loudly, signifying the beginning of its night hunt. A chilly breeze ruffled amongst the rocks as Firo stood over Vivu, wondering whether the other cub would dare to explore the mountains in darkness.

Vivu looked up at Firo as if he had just been challenged. And then it dawned on him, he hadn't roughhoused with another lion since being with his father. The temptation was more than Vivu could resist, but before he could retaliate, Firo's next words would change his life forever...

'You're a good friend,'

A good friend... Vivu was a good friend... he was absolutely stunned. He never thought he'd hear those words, especially so fast. A new sensation enraptured Vivu's body, one that he thought didn't exist inside him. He was overwhelmed with emotion. He felt his mouth curve, he couldn't help but smile at those words; and the smile didn't vanish. He had just made a friend and he was genuinely happy.

But before he could answer back, he heard the owl's hoot and saw just how dark it was getting. That's when Vivu decided that he'd have a little adventure to celebrate the making of his first friend. "Friend Firo, how about an adven-chure?" he questioned, his tone implied he was fixing to dare him.

Firo's heart beat faster at Vivu's words. Just as he wondered about Vivu's bravery, the tall cub had beat him to it. Firo smiled cunningly. 'Hee hee, you dare to? These mountains are inhabited by fierce monsters with fangs the size of our arms and claws that can rip a tree in two. Does that not scare you, Vivu the buzzard lion?'

Even in the dark, it was visible that Firo was excited. He had always wanted to explore these parts. Perhaps not in the dark but certainly not alone. Now that he had found a new friend, it seems there was no better time to do it. Firo wanted to see these Majabalian lions for himself. He bet both him and Vivu together could take them on.
