The sun was beating down intensely on the already dry Pridelands, and a cool breeze stirred the quiet air. Near the edge of Pride Rock, the dusty-furred lioness lay on her back, pretending to contemplate the clear blue sky. However, anyone who knew Leliya would know she would never have the patience for any sort of contemplation, save for thinking over a good joke to tell someone later on that day. She yawned and rolled onto her side, tail flicking back and forth restlessly. She stretched her limbs each in turn, hoping that constant movement might make time past faster.

Leliya stood and impatiently scratched her claws along the surface of the rock. She paced back and forth, stopping every few pawsteps to check the sun's position as it crawled across the sky, almost resembling a particularly slow bug making its way over a rock or a blade of grass.

Time always seemed to pass painfully slowly when she was waiting, and waiting was one of the things Leliya hated most. Unfortunately, having been a close friend of Princess Alyeska all her life, she'd done an awful lot of it. Many of her afternoons had been spent this way, waiting for Aly to finish her "princess lessons" or whatever else it was she spent her time doing, and this particular day was no different.

Then, after what seemed like an eternity, Leliya spotted the distinctive reddish coat padding up Pride rock. Excitement rose through her as she sped off toward her friend.

"Hiya!" Leliya greeted the princess enthusiastically, practically bouncing up and down with the sudden release of her surplus energy. "What have you been up to? You look like you could use a break."

  • Alyeska wearily walked back to Pride Rock, exhausted from a day of 'training.' Her mother had decided that it would be an excellent idea to get to know some of the animals of the Pridelands better. She didn't think either of them realized just how difficult it would be to speak with the more skittish animals, like the gemsbok or the gazelles. Whenever Aly and her mother began to approach one, they'd stick up their heads and sprint in the opposite direction. Around midday, though, the duo had managed to speak with a young, frightened zebra.

Alyeska had attempted to explain just what she was supposed to be doing, but she could easily tell that the zebra was far more interested in the fact that the queen of the Pridelands was still lurking not too far away. For all it knew, this was an elaborate trap designed to make him an easy meal.

So, the princess's words of momentary peace went fairly ignored. When she'd reached out with a paw to prod him back into the conversation, he'd picked up his tail and left.

After that, she'd called it a day and headed back to the dens after an afternoon of diplomatic disaster.

The red princess immediately perked up, though, once she spotted a familiar dusty-brown and gray pelt. "Leliya!" She said, with renewed energy, her head shooting up as she sprinted over to her friend.

"They made me try and talk with all of the prey animals!" The princess said with disdain. "Supposedly, it helps to 'build relations'. Whatever that means." She sighed with a roll of her eyes.

"I'm so glad to be back." She said happily, bouncing up once or twice. "There's only so much talking to gazelles one girl can do. What about you?" She asked, gazing at Leliya.
