  • PERSONALITY: Usiku is a kind and content young lioness, mostly spending her time making sure that Mchala doesn't accidentally kill himself in his carefree ways. She is courteous, though a bit old-fashioned, and enjoys a serious talk now and again. The problem with keeping an eye on Mchala is that he's almost always getting into trouble, and she most often always has to be the voice of reason. Thus earning her the nickname, The Dark Stick-in-the-Mud. Mchala often teases her about it, but she finds that she doesn't mind. She knows that when things get serious, Mchala will not hesitate to protect her, and she would do the same, though she thinks that, ultimately, she would do the better job. Nonetheless, she is a teenager, and teenagers like to have fun. If there is (safe) fun to be had, she'll most likely be there, following Mchala. Unlike Mchala, she cannot create stories on the dot (lies or otherwise) and is quite bashful about her singing voice, though her companion frequently.says otherwise. She likes Mchala more than a friend, but doesn't know if he'll return the feeling, being a carefree rogue, and therefore keeps her feelings closed, despite them being mostly at each other's side.

RELATIVES: Diamre, Kiamara, Catalan, and Shistani-her ancestors. All, as far as she knows, are still cursed, and a part of a big ancient tree on the outskirts of the pridelands. Her father and mother she knows is dead.

HISTORY: A long time ago, even before Mohatu's reign, the pridelands was still a wonderful place. It was here that a young lioness and her mate lived. Kiamara was the niece of the reigning king, and was happily pregnant, living peacefully with her true love, Diamre.Until the human warriors came, trying to fulfill the tradition of hunting a lion to eat it's heart. One of the warriors was a shaman in training, and very cruel. Sneaking past those with the valor to face danger head on, he found Kiamara prone after just delivering her cubs, some ways away from Pride Rock.

Kiamara fought with all her waning might, but as the fledgling shaman tried to magically remove her heart, he ended up cursing her and her cubs, turning them into a great tree. What really happened was, the shaman had set up a crude trap, that set Kiamara and her cubs, except one,in a wooden cage. The pridelanders drove off the warriors, but couldn't figure out how to release Kiamara and her cubs. Her mate was heart broken, and they all died together on a stormy night. A great tree grew in their place, leading the pridelanders to believe that the cursed family was the tree. The cub that had escaped the trap was forgotten to have escaped at all.

Another storm came, decades after, and broke off one of the major limbs. After that disaster, a black lioness that looked like she had Kiamara's traits appeared in the middle of a desert. She traveled, to the witness of a few pridelanders, dazedly towards human civilization, where she was captured and given to a shaman. She gave birth to a young cub, and that cub escaped into the wilderness one night. The mother died of heartache, and the shaman did not see her a few years afterward. One night he found a small whittling block, and began to carve.

He carved out the shape of a young spirit, not at all surprised to find it was a young lioness, not much older than a cub. He placed it on a special desk inside his hut, missing the comfort of his lioness. One dark and dreary night, a cub appeared with the same appearance of his missing companions, and the carving was cracked in two. The small cub did not know who she was, or where she came from, but somehow knew the small legend of the cursed family. From clues then on she gathered that she was a descendant of the one cub let free from the curse. For the next few years it was there, whith the shaman, that she stayed, observing, and learning so much about medicines and plants, she could've been a shaman herself. It was one day, when she was still young, and her friend had grown old, that he took her and the broken carving, to a small village, where a white lion was being held captive. After the shaman set him free, he then set the young cub free from his arms. And smiling, he told her that the white lion was one that brought peace and prosperity, even of only a little, and could not do so in a cage; he was needed to roam, so the energies he escorted could spread. It was her purpose to make sure that the white lion would live and thrive and do his purpose. So the old shaman and the young cub parted ways, still remaining friends, but each going to do their purpose.

She followed the white lion to a small city, where they soon became best friends, and survived the city together, finding something similar in their love for singing and storytelling.

Soon, the people of the city, as the cubs matured, called them the White Lion and His Shadow. But that didn't fit, for they were too often seen acting as equals. So they began calling them Mchala and Usiku, day and night. The young lioness and her companion accepted the names, becoming somewhat of a sight of the city. More of alley cats than lions, they heard songs and stories everywhere, both local, and from across the sea, by radio.

Eventually the city had received all that it could of Mchala's subtle magic, making it predictable, so Mchala wanted to move on, back towards his old target. Usiku had no objections, wanting to find the Pridelands, as her cursed family was probably still standing there (Mchala still doesn't believe her about she being the descendant of a cursed tree.). So they headed off in each other's good company, and having crossed land over land, claiming profession as traveling bards, Mchala and Usiku have finally made it to the lands surrounding the Pridelands. They don't know what they'll find, but it's sure to be an adventure that they'll go through together.
