JRR Tolkien; Discussing the Books of JRR Tolkien

This is a thread to discuss the works of JRR Tolkien, namely his Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and The Silmarillion The movies will be discussed in another thread, unless it is in reference to something. And Purists beware, I love both.

I think the best thing about it all is that The Hobbit started out as a bedtime story.

The best. So sweet a beginning for something that would become what it would become.

Yes! And it was a bed time story for little British boys. A lot of people seem to forget that. One of the more interesting things I've learned recently was that Tolkien wanted to go back and rewrite parts of The Hobbit, to bring in more into line with what he had going on in Lord of the Rings.

Kind of makes the actions of The Hobbit films make sense a bit even if they were not what Tolkien himself might have done.
