Out Of Gas

Never underestimate your opponent.

That is a mantra that has been spoken countless times in my line of work. The opponent may be smaller in size or stature or inferior in terms of ability but they still have the capability of pulling off an upset victory if one is overeager or overconfident.

Often times, I am the opponent that is underestimated. When I am not, people tend to underestimate those such as Shelly Faye...

As Paxar drives our rental vehicle down the highway on our way to Pine Bluff, Arkansas, the venue for the next Initiative event, I stare intently out of the passenger side window.

"Remind me again why we're driving to Pine Bluff when we could've easily just flown there."

Glancing over at her, my friend continues keeping her eyes on the road ahead.

"We spend too much time flying from place to place, Paxar. Driving allows us to view the natural splendor the Lord has provided up close."

Paxar frowns slightly, growling back at me.

"Well while you're viewing natural splendor all I get to see is asphalt and roadkill. Not to mention that either way you're looking at it from out of a window."

"I am still able to see it with my own two eyes. That is what matters."

Rolling her chestnut eyes, Paxar mutters under her breath.

"You get to see nature more than you see your own boyfriend..."

Hearing her speak but not hearing her words, I turn my head and look at her curiously as I narrow my eyes slightly.

"What was that?"

Feigning innocence Paxar continues glaring at the road ahead.

"Nothing."

Moving my head back to look out the passenger side window there is a momentary pause between us until suddenly the car begins to sputter, reducing in speed.

"What the..."

"Why are we slowing down? Is something wrong?

Glaring at me briefly before moving the vehicle over to the shoulder of the road as it continues slowing, she speaks to me sarcastically.

"No Reya, I'm just making the trip to Pine Bluff middle of nowhere purposely take a lot longer so you can keep looking at scenery. Yeah, there's something wrong."

"Do you have any idea as to what is the matter?"

"How should I know?"

"Well you are the one operating the vehicle."

"That doesn't mean anything."

Peering over at the dashboard indicators on her side of the vehicle, I point one out in particular to her.

"Perhap this does."

Paxar glances down at the dashboard, before letting out a heavy sigh as the car finally comes to a complete stop.

"Great...we're out of gas. Wonderful."

"How did we manage to do that?"

"I don't know...I was probably distracted by your nature talk...or trying to avoid being crushed by an eighteen wheeler."

"In any case, how shall we go about remedying this situation? Shall we call for assistance?"

"We're in the middle of nowhere. We have no phone service. How do you plan on calling for help?"

"I see...then a trip to the nearest gas station is in order."

"Clearly, Captain Obvious...but it's like ten miles back."

"Perhaps we should start walking then before it gets dark?"

"You make it sound like we've got a choice."

The two of us step out of the vehicle, locking the doors before closing them and examining out surroundings.

"Yeah this doesn't look like the beginning of a horror movie or anything..."

"Do not worry, my friend. The Lord will protect us from any harm that may come our way, as He always does."

"Tell me that again when there's a guy standing in front of us with a machete wearing a hockey mask."

We walk several hundred feet silently until finally Paxar speaks up.

"So Reya, about what Cera said back at the airport..."

Shaking my head, I interrupt her.

"I do not want to talk about it, not to mention that this is not the time nor the place for this discussion. We may talk about it later."

"Then what should we talk about? We have a long way to walk, after all. How about your match this week against Shelly Faye?"

"We could do that I suppose..."

"You do know that she's supposedly some sort of a pirate, right?"

"Shelly Faye is a thief, plain and simple. You know how I feel about those that steal."

"Indeed. Facing her shouldn't be a problem anyway. She's miles out of your league."

"You should not underestimate her. I know I will not. After all, she may just surprise you and the rest of those that believe she has no chance against me on Initiative."

"If I were you I'd be more worried about her manager. That guy's huge."

"Not to worry. If her manager tries to interfere I will be ready for him."

Suddenly a truck starts coming down the road as Paxar breathes a sigh of relief and I smile brightly.

"Oh thank God...I was not looking forward to walking for ten miles."

"Thank the Lord indeed. Perhaps this fellow will take us to a gas station so we can get back to making our way to Pine Bluff. Come, let us speak with him."

The driver notices us, pulling the truck over to the side of the road to offer us some assistance...
