A Long Run; Goten Training Post

You don’t really get the full impact of what weighted training clothing ACTUALLY are until you’ve run a mile in them. A long, painful, slow, mile. Goten had recently purchased a set of weighted training clothing including a gi, pants, boots, and wristbands. He had casually thrown them on and went for a jog. What he didn’t realize was that despite the ease at which he could lift them to begin with, it was a long slog when you had to use them for a prolonged period of time. It was like trying to hold your arms out straight while gripping a free weight- it was insanely hard to do.

What had started as a gentle jog was now a torturous trek and though he was hardly a mile in he was already struggling to stay upright.

“Maybe... I should have started with just the boots...” He groaned as he began mile two. His body felt like it was on fire- the amount of weight he was carrying was akin to dragging a large dumbbell with him the entire way. Even flying was a drag, the few times he tried he came slamming back down to the ground in a few moments. Nothing seemed to help and he was only getting further and further from his home.

Around mile three he began to cramp and he had his first serious stumble.

“I don’t know how dad does it...” He said, referring to the years his father had spent in full training gear. It was no wonder that he was so fast when he was out of it. Goten had only been in it for about an hour and he imagined he would float like a butterfly when he took it off. Still, he was a saiyan and these sorts of things made him stronger. The more damage he took the more he improved.

It was at mile four when he got his second wind. He could feel his body adapting to the new strain he had put it on it. He figured it would start to adjust after it was clear he had no intention of taking it off. It didn’t feel any lighter, the boots still felt like he was dragging cinder blocks with his feet, but he felt like he could tolerate it more. He was already doused with sweat but he thought that he could still push himself harder. Putting on a burst of speed he succeeded in leaping over a small downed tree that had fallen across the path. It was a small accomplishment for some but for him, with what felt like the weight of a small car hanging off him, it was a major one.

His new pace was brutal but he managed to keep it up as he rounded mile five. He was more than half way done on his mountainous circuit but this leg of the run, which he normally did as a warm up, was the hardest. It was at a steep incline and his body was already screaming for him to stop. He shut it out and continued. He pushed himself to not slow down as he ascended the rocky, winding, path to the peak of the low mountain.

At mile six, when he reached the top, he momentarily considered taking a break to celebrate but decided against it. The road down was easier and more direct but he was worried that the momentum from going down hill and the extra weight on him would topple him over. To counteract this he leaned back as he ran so his weight was still balanced properly. The first part of mile six was a switchback, which he had to slow himself for just to stop from falling over or running into a rocky outcropping. It ended with a straight away that led him into mile seven.

He made good time, resuming his breakneck pace, through mile seven. He was red, sweaty, and past where his limit was. He was probably badly in need of water, having perspired most of his body’s supply, but he’d take care of that when he got back home. His whole body ached and he could feel a dizzy spell coming on. He knew he had to get home before that hit and he was only a few miles from his goal so he just kept on keeping on.

Mile eight was over some rough rocks but he was able hop across them. They were near a rushing river and this refreshingly splashed him a few times, bringing his temperature down as he ran. He normally didn’t like the moisture but the mist from the spray was like a balm on a burn to him right now. Moving away from the slick rocks and refreshing river-mist Goten started on mile nine- the home stretch.

It was a straight shot back home, only a mile and a half to go across open fields. He felt the gentle tug of the tall grass as he cut a rapid swath though them as he went. He had to manually regulate his breathing, coming out in great gasps as he huffed and puffed across the expanse. He saw deer grazing at the edge of the clearing, bounding away quickly as he got within eyesight. Goten smiled, animals always made him feel at peace with himself. Excited for the big finish Goten made it a point to run flat out towards his house on the horizon.

It had been several hours since he’d left his home and he’d cover about ten miles in his extremely heavy training gear. Collapsing on the ground he crawled out of his uniform, leaving him in only his briefs. He fetched some fresh spring water and doused himself in the bucket full of water before plunging his head in and drinking his fill. Looking over his shoulder at the pile of weighted training clothing he had discarded he chuckled. He had set out to just do a warm up jog in his new outfit but had ended up fighting a physical battle that he had nearly lost. Once he had recovered a bit he went over and picked them up, feeling that they were damp and clammy from the run.

“Pwwww, I wonder if you are hand wash only because you’re gonna need to be clean before I use you for something like that again!”
