The climb up Korin's Tower took an hour, and for whatever reason Mei thought it would be more difficult. The wind howled around her body, but still Mei climbed without impediment. Some of the hand holds and foot ledges were placed in haphazard areas, but still Mei continued her ascent. The air became thin and Mei had difficulty breathing while the bitter cold snapped at the exposed flesh of her face, but still Mei did not falter as she made her way up to meet Master Korin. Elder Sister Pyya sent her here for training, and Mei would get that training no matter what it took. Soon in the distance Mei saw a bulbous building near the top of Korin's Tower. Her heart skipped a beat as she saw her goal draw closer. Her climbing motions quickened as she saw her goal in sight. Mei recalled what Tien said, that Master Korin was quite a character and not nearly as strict as some, and so Mei looked forward to the meeting. She was glad that the world was filled with so many capable masters of the martial arts that were so willing to teach the next generation their ways. It partially made up for the betrayal of Fuega. Only partially. The emotional wound left by such treachery still remained a blackened mar across Mei's heart. She neared the round building on the top of the pillar and reached out for the rungs in the ladder. Once she had a firm grasp on the cold stone, Mei climbed up over the side of the building until she saw a railing. Once she was over, she took a moment to catch her breath. With the thin air, she needed a few minutes to adjust, but it was no different than Mount Frappe, perhaps even easier. "Ahem," said a voice behind her, causing her to turn around. The site took Mei by surprise. Mei was not sure what to expect when she met Master Korin for the first time. She knew that he would be different, but she did not expect a cat. Not even a cat-man, but what appeared to be a normal, white-furred cat standing on his hind legs holding a walking staff with his eyes shut tight. The two simply stared at each other as, Master Korin's feline lips curled into a smile. Despite his eyes seemingly closed, Mei could feel something in the ether that he stared right through her. It made her feel uncomfortable even though the Master looked little more than a big fluffy kitty cat. Still, the fact that Master Korin was a feline did not mean Mei could be rude to him, so she gave him proper respect by bowing to him as she did with anyone else. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Master Korin," she said as she bowed to him. "My name is Mei Xing of the Kasai Hato Katachi and I would humbly like to request training with you. I seek the ability to defeat a great evil and to protect the Temple I call my home and my family. If I cannot be trained, then I thank you for your time and will return to the Earth's surface." Korin did not immediately reply to Mei, choosing to simply stand there and continue looking Mei over with closed eye. Mei tried to maintain her respectful stance, but found the general silence awkward. Still, her training regimens with Elder Sister Pyya taught her that the Master spoke when the Master wanted to speak and was the only one who granted permission for the student to speak freely. She would wait until Korin thought it was necessary that Mei can speak. "You don't have to worry about any of that," Korin said at last, catching Mei by surprise. "You'll find that I'm pretty casual around here. I've had more visitors in the last thirty years compared to the last three hundred. I also know why you are here. I've spent that last little while reading your mind. Not prying too deep, just the stuff on the surface like why you are here, considering you are new. I'm Korin, as I'm sure you can guess, and I'm here to tell you that there is absolutely nothing I can teach you that you don't already know. Sorry kid." Mei baulked at Master Korin as he delivered his bad news. "What do you mean you can't teach me anything! I climbed the Tower, didn't I? That was the test and I passed it!" "Yeah, you and probably a dozen hundred folks these days." Korin turned around to face the edge of his home, looking out onto the world around him. "I can see you met Goku, who also climbed the Tower, and Tien Shinhan, who also climbed the Tower. Back in the day it used to be a trial, but let me ask you something. Was it really that difficult to make your way up here? Did it put a strain on your strength and stamina?" This question made Mei pause. She looked over the edge of the railing and down the length of the tower that lead to Korin's. She did need to admit that the climb was not nearly as dangerous or as difficult as she thought it was. In fact, she had much more difficulty with training under greater gravity pressures than she did climbing the height all the way. "But..." Mei sputtered in disbelief. "My mentor Pyya told me I could get training here that could mean the difference between victory or defeat! If you read my mind, then you know why I'm here!" Again, Korin did not answer her immediately, focusing on the horizon in the distance. "Kids these days," Korin muttered as he held his staff tightly in his paw. "I said there is nothing I can teach you here, but that doesn't mean you can't learn a thing or two. Face it, people used to come here to get the 'sacred water', but it's really just tap water. It took the Turtle Hermit Roshi three years to get the water through my training, but it only took Goku three days. I bet if we played that game, it would only take you three hours due to your speed and skill, and that's if I was into it. Most folks come here just for my senzu beans these days anyways, so I suppose it's a nice change of pace to have some new company." "Master Roshi... and Master Goku both climbed the Tower?" Mei was surprised that she seemed to be following in the footsteps of other masters. "Then you were able to teach them! So why can't you teach me your ways!" "Because you've long surpassed me," Korin said, "Fighters these days are on a magnitude I can't even begin to describe. I can teach fundamentals, but your training mentor Pyya did a pretty good job of that already." The ancient cat master turned to face Mei and despite his words that disparaged her, he continued to smile. "Why don't you stay here for a while. I know you are looking for the Furnace of Eight Divisions, but if you go rushing headlong into the fire, all that's going to happen is you ending up like ashes. Believe me, kid, I know all about Fuega the Dread Tiger. She's out there giving cats like me a bad name and I'd like nothing more than for you to whup her butt. But at this stage, all of your gravity training will be for nothing. Fuega will be too strong and she'll cut you to ribbons with her void claws and trust me, I'd rather not see a doll like you get ripped apart. After all, you're kind of easy on the eyes, toots." Mei glowered at Korin. "I refuse to believe there is nothing I can learn here! There is something you can teach, anything, I will learn!" Mei fell to her knees and bowed low to Master Korin. "Elder Sister Pyya would not send me here if there wasn't something for me!" Korin walked over to an ornate stone pedestal where on top stood a intricate glass bottle. Korin hummed as he looked over the bottle before scooping it up with the pointed end of his walking staff. He then turned to face Mei and said, "You want to learn something? Then we'll do the same test I've put all my other students. This is the bottle that contains the contained the sacred water until the truth came out that it's simply water from the facet. Roshi and Goku became much more powerful thanks to the hard work and determination of simply trying to get the bottle. Let's see how you do." Mei's eyes lit up as Korin finally decided to put her through the same tests as he did for Master Roshi and Goku. At last she could show Master Korin her abilities just like those two former students did. To show Korin she was ready, Mei entered a battle stance and readied herself to spring into action within a moments notice. She would claim the bottle from Korin's furry grasp. Master Korin stood still, his focus solely on Mei Xing. "Whenever you're ready, kid," Korin said. "I'll give it my all. I hope you're ready." Nodding to Master Korin, Mei waited for the perfect opportunity to make her move. When she saw an opening she took it, moving like a blur towards Korin. Every bristle of his fur blew in the wind she created. To Mei's surprise, she zipped back to her original position with the bottle in hand. She looked at the bottle and then back at Korin. Frustration marked her face as she set the bottle back on the pedestal. "That was too easy!" Mei shouted, "I thought you were going to give it your all!" "I did, Mei," Korin admitted, turning to look towards the sky once again. "I gave it my all, but my all is no longer one of the pinnacles of the Earth. Everyone in the world far exceeds my strength and speed, including you, which leaves me with little to teach young martial artists now. Their bodies are too hardened, their skills much sharper than they ever were in my day." Mei hung her head low. Even though she succeeded in the task, she felt empty. "Then I've come here for nothing." "Now now," Korin said in an attempt to reassure her. "If there's anything I've learned in eight hundred years is that there is something to learn no matter where you go or who you meet. I might not be able to teach you about fighting, but I can teach you important lessons that will help you with your battle against Fuega. You've already did plenty of training in those new gravity machines, correct?" Mei nodded to Korin. "Yes, I was able to train in the Capsule Corp. gravity chamber for a little bit. It was the most difficult training in my life." "The most difficult so far," Korin added, "You'll likely come across something harder later on. Don't know what, but I know it won't be here. Before I teach you anything, there is one thing I'd like to show you. Think of it as another goal to reach for, once your ready to head for it." Korin used his staff to point upward towards the sky. Mei joined Korin at the edge of his home and followed the direction he was pointing. Try as she might, she could only see the bright blue sky and the fluffy clouds that floated lazily by. "I don't see anything," Mei said. Korin jutted his staff again. "Look closer, it's really small from down here." Squinting her eyes, Mei was able to make out a small dot high in the sky. "What is that?" Mei asked as she turned to Korin. "That's Kami's Lookout, or Dende's Lookout now," Korin answered, "There the Earth's Guardian lives with his helper, Mister Popo. One day you'll go up there for even more training. For now, we have a lot of work to do." *** WC: 2000 |

With the sun now at it's zenith, Korin decided that the best way to begin his lessons with Mei was to carry on the conversation into the second level of his bulbous home. Mei followed him downstairs to see a small living area filled large clay jars as well as living amenities, though they were all built seemingly for someone of Korin's stature. Mei tiptoed around the miniature furnishings in an effort to not accidentally step on something or knock something over. She made very deliberate and careful motions which seemed to amuse Korin more than anything else. "Sorry, I wasn't really expecting company other than Yajirobe," Korin said as he walked towards a small stove. "I haven't seen him in a while. Still, it's nice to have some company with someone new. I've gotten used to having a lot more guests in the last twenty years than I ever did in the five hundred." "Have you ever considered a bungalo on the surface?" Mei quipped. Korin laughed, fishing around for something in some cupboards. "It took me years to get plumbing installed in the Tower so I can get tap water," he said, "besides, I have a great view of the world. This is some prime real estate and I'm not looking to sell. Besides, what is an old cat like me going to do down there any ways. As far as I'm concerned, I've got everything I want down here. I have my senzu beans and curious guests like you to keep me entertained." Mei rolled her eyes and sat down cross legged, waiting for Korin to initiate the training. She came here for a purpose, but all Korin seemed to want to do was talk. "You mentioned someone named Yajirobe? Is he a student of yours?" This made Korin laugh very loudly. "Student, yeah right. He more or less helps me out, tells me the going-ons in the world, brings up stuff from the surface. Little errands here and there. In return I give him some senzu beans. If you ever meet Yajirobe, take a good look at him and realize what an all-senzu bean diet can do to the body. Speaking of which, you want some tea? I'm going to put on a pot. I hope you like it green. Yajirobe was supposed to bring back some different flavours but he probably got distracted by a buffet." "Tea sounds very nice, Master Korin, thank you." Though Mei wanted to get down to training as soon as possible, she decided that a simple cup of tea would be a nice way to get rid of the edge brought to her by frustration. As she waited for Master Korin, she looked out of one of the windows towards the ground below. She could not even see the tribes people who made their home in the Sacred Land of Korin she was so high up. She then turned around to see Dende's Lookout that hung even higher in the sky. Perhaps she would follow Master Korin's advice and go there one day to see the Guardian of the Earth. "Hey Mei," Korin said, snapping Mei's attention from the window, "Could you go and get some water out of those jars? There's a ladle right next to them." Mei nodded in confirmation and walked towards one of the clay jars. She picked up the ladle and lifted the cover of one of the jars and looked inside. At first she saw a pot of regular water, but as she looked closer, the water began to ripple under it's own influence. Surprise struck her first, but Mei decided to look closer. The very water began to change into something like glass, and Mei thought she could look right through it as she stared out a window. The waters colour began to shift and Mei saw several images begin to form, those of people, places, and things. The water rippled once and Mei saw the young half-saiyan Gohan talking to the two full blooded saiyan women, Avako and Tanya. The mountainous range of Mount Paozu created the backdrop of this image, the forests and the rivers providing serene scenery. As the three conversed Mei saw someone approach them. Much to her surprise, Mei watched herself crawl out of the forest and towards the three. This was an image of the past being shown to her through the water. The image progressed as it did exactly as Mei remembered, with Avako being somewhat rude to Gohan and Mei demonstrating the power of the True Kasai. "What kind of water is this?" Mei asked Master Korin. "It's showing me the past." "Pretty neat huh," Korin answered, "It can show you the present too, but not the future. This is just water I collected from the rain. The water in the very air sees everything and its easy for it to remember. This is one way I keep tabs on the world, whenever Yajirobe isn't around. If someone is pure of heart, it shows them images of good times, of friends. If someone has darkness in their hearts, it shows them all their crimes. Looks like you have a clear conscience, Mei." Mei blinked in confusion. She had a clear conscience? Why would she not have a clear conscience? It's not like she ran around abusing her power. She was focused solely on her training and helping her friends when they were in trouble. Elder Sister Pyya's training really stuck with her. For as long as Mei remembered, Pyya's lessons were based solely on focusing on training and training the right way. Mei recalled that there were several occasions where she could have taken a short cut, but decided not to. As Pyya said, the long road was filled with obstacles and dangers, but the prize was far greater at the end. To take the short road would mean Mei would miss out on the challenges that aided in her growth. This was the primary lesson from Pyya and Mei understood it's purpose clear as day. The water shimmered again changing from the scene of Mei joining the Z-Fighters to another place. Indeed, when Mei saw the Kasai Temple in all it's splendour and glory, Mei saw that the image was from another time. Kasai Guardians stood tall on their high vantage points keeping an eye out for danger while more walked the dirt paths of the temple grounds. Several of the other Sisters milled about with their tasks. The very sight of the Temple gave Mei pause. It was like watching a perfect memory of better times before the rogue Kasai Cineza attacked the temple. As Mei looked closer, she saw that this was from a few years ago. The image zoomed in to where a young pre-teen Mei trained with Elder Sister Pyya in the courtyard. It felt surreal to be watching herself and even listening to her voice made Mei crack a smile. She could not believe that she ever though having those two braided pigtails were ever a good idea, and looking at herself now, Mei was glad that she stopped wearing her hair in that style. "This is your final test!" Elder Sister Pyya barked. "If you can get this box, you will finally be Kasai! If you fail to get this box before the sun sets on this day, then you will start your training all over again from the very beginning! The Kasai Guardians have no need for failures, I will not be dishonoured by the likes of you! So come at me with all your might and skill and don't hold back in the slightest! Hold back, and you will be in a world of pain!" Elder Sister Pyya opened the box and revealed the prize within; the cheongsam garments given only to those who became Kasai Guardians. The red silk woven with golden inlays. The brilliant design of the sacred flame. The symbol of the Kasai stitched in black over the heart. It was everything Mei wanted and more. She wanted nothing else but to be Kasai so that she could defend the Temple and the Sisters she called family. "I was so happy that day," Mei said aloud, though she did not know if Korin heard her. "It took me all day to get past Pyya's incredible defence but I did it and took the box for myself. It was the happiest moment in my life. Old Master Fuega was there when I put the cheongsam on. She had the biggest smile on her face, like she was watching her own daughter rise up in the world." "But it was all a lie. She was happy because she saw another potential source of energy for Cineza to steal later. I meant nothing to her. The only person who ever believed in me was Elder Sister Pyya and she had a funny way of showing it. Now Pyya is too weak to fight and Fuega is going to try to steal something sacred and become invincible. I should be training but I'm here having tea with a cat." Korin's ears perked up at the mention of his name, but otherwise did not turn around. "Like I said, your mentor Pyya did a real good number on you," Korin said, "She must be one heck of a teacher to get you to the level of discipline you are at now. But there is one thing that Fuega did to your training, a flaw she put in so that none of her students would ever be able to rise up and challenge her." It was Mei's turn to perk up and look at Korin. "What is it? What is the flaw?! Tell me please!" "Once we get some tea going, I'll tell you." Korin turned his head and pointed at the water with his staff. "I thought you were helping me." "Oh, right!" Mei sheepishly filled the ladle with some water and brought it over to Korin. He simply smiled as Mei poured the water into the iron kettle, yet Mei noticed that the small, old-fashioned stove did not have a fire within it. "Would you look at that," Korin said, "The stove doesn't have any fire in it. Could you help out with that one too, kid? I'm afraid I might set my whiskers on fire. That would be awkward seeing me walk funny all over the place." Mei raised a brow at Korin but did not question the Master's lack of igniting his own fire. Instead she raised her open palm and pointed at the stove. She created a small hinotama and fired it into the waiting logs. The ball burst as it hit the wood, but otherwise did nothing. "Hmm," Korin said, "Looks like you need a bit more oomph than that. Try again." Mei did so, firing another hinotama into the stove, this one larger and more powerful than the last, though not by much. Like the last one, this hinotama exploded in a brilliant display, but otherwise did nothing. Frustration began to build in Mei as she launched another larger more brilliant hinotama, only to be stymied by failure. She repeated the process over and over again, but no matter how big the hinotama she thought would work to ignite the firewood, the wood remained cold to the touch. "What the heck is going on, Master Korin!?" Mei shouted in anger, "that is simple, dry wood and it should catch on fire easily! Is this some kind of trick!?" "Of course it is," Korin admitted, "That wood is sacred wood, and it won't catch fire just because you say 'I want you to catch on fire.' You see, the flaw Fuega put on you is that for all this time, no matter who you faced in your travels, you've been holding back. I've seen it in the way you move, the fireballs you are tossing right now. You're afraid of your own power, just like Fuega taught you." "I have to be afraid of my own power!" Mei cried out, "If I ever lose control, then I'm one step away from becoming a raging inferno that will do whatever it takes to reduce everything and everyone around it to ash! What are you even suggesting, Master Korin? That I just let loose all of destructive power of the Kasai!?" Korin did not react to Mei's outburst. "Yes," was his answer, "The only way you will ever beat Fuega is if you no longer hold back against your master and unleash your full potential on her. She made you and all of the Kasai afraid of their own power, even Cineza. If you ever want to beat her, you are going to have let go of all inhibitions." Mei slumped to the ground. It made a degree of sense, that Fuega would want her own students to have some kind of limiter that they could not use against her. But still, the possible for collateral damage was just too much for Mei. She would never forgive herself if she took another life accidentally due to her own destructive power. "What if I can't unleash that power?" Mei asked, "What if I don't have what it takes to let loose the power of fire?" "Then Fuega already won, kid," Korin answered, "And there won't be anything you can do about it." *** WC: 2205 TWC: 4205 |

Mei stared out into the world as the sun set in the west. The clouds rolled by Korin's Tower without a care in the world, unable to recognize the inner turmoil that raged within Mei's heart and soul. Master Korin's advice that Mei needed to unleash her power at its fullest to defeat Fuega bothered her to no end. On the one hand, she knew that she needed all the strength she could muster to even stand a chance against the founder of the Kasai. Fuega's power was built on generations of guardians who were all claimed by their treacherous teacher. On the other hand, Mei saw only the unknown, a pitch black hole of which she was scared to look down in. If Mei tapped into her hidden reserves of power, would she lose herself to the twisting flames that hungered for destruction? There was a fine line between the guiding flame, the light that shined a path for those to follow safely or warmed them when they were cold. One wrong move on Mei's part though and she could slip into the throes of cataclysmic destruction. She may even enter the wildfire state and she knew all too well what such a form could do to the world. Closing her eyes, Mei tried to meditate with the aid of the world's energy, trying to find an answer in her teachings, at least those from Elder Sister Pyya. If she didn't unleash her true potential, then there was no way she could defeat Fuega and stop her from claiming the Furnace of Eight Divisions. However, she remembered the sheer destruction Cineza wrought on the Temple and when she turned the Kasai against Mei. It frightened her to even consider wielding such terrible power for her own use. What if she could not control it? What if she did countless in collateral damage? What if... what if she liked the power of the Kasai let loose upon the world. "I don't know what to do," Mei said aloud as she slumped onto the guard rail. "Life doesn't have easy answers, kid," came Korin's voice from behind her. Mei turned to see the Master of the tower float over to her, still holding onto his staff with a firm paw. "We just sort of go through the years doing our best, even though sometimes we need to better than that. Sometimes life gives us hard choices and we have to really consider what the consequences are. More often than not, we don't have the luxury of time to worry about the philosophy. Sometimes we just need to act and hope for the best." Mei knew Korin was right. She needed to steel her resolve and make her way to Mount Five Element. But her doubt still lingered and if there was one lesson from Pyya that Mei recalled it was that doubt, that fear would be the mind killer. Fear was the small death that would lead to utter defeat. She needed to master her fear... No. She needed to burn her fear away. "Hey Mei," Korin said, alerting Mei to his presence. "Why don't you take a look into the water again. It might show you something interesting. Something that will help you find your way." Deciding that looking into the water was better than moping about Korin's Tower, Mei walked over to the vats and removed one of the lids. She looked inside as she did before and waiting for an image to form. However, the water merely remained still and refused to show her anything. She sat and waited for what felt like fifteen minutes, all the while Korin watched her from his spot on the rail. "I don't see anything," Mei said as she looked up to Korin. "Am I doing something wrong?" Korin shrugged. "The water shows you what you think you need to see. Right now you are thinking about your own fears, which cloud your mind. Clear your head of any fears and start thinking of people or places important to you. Forget about your fears and focus on the water." Mei nodded to Korin and turned her attention solely on the water. She took a deep breath and exhaled through her mouth, clearing her mind of all distractions, much like meditation. She cleared her head of any thoughts including those of the Furnace and Fuega. She pushed out thoughts of Korin and especially those of her doubts in regards to the Kasai. She focused solely on the water just as instructed. Her eyes never wavered as she stared into the dark clay jar and the unmoving liquid again. Finally after a few moments of concentration, the water started to ripple on it's own. Mei watched the water with keen interest as image began to form within. Once again she saw the Temple of the Kasai, only this time it was the Temple of the present day. Scorched and dilapidated from Cineza's siege, Mei choked back a sob as she looked at the dull grey lands that were once filled with life. There should have been Kasai Guardians maintaining a constant vigil on the watchtowers. There should have been great fires burning brightly, lighting the Temple Grounds at all hours of the day. There should have been Sisters working, training, and studying for a better tomorrow. All that was gone now, and all Mei saw in the water was a lone figure climbing the steps towards the Grand Pyre. Dressed in simple robes of a Kasai initiate, Mei recognized the woman as Elder Sister Pyya due to her great height and wild blonde hair. Elder Sister Pyya walked slowly and her face was marred by despair. Many of her wounds from the battle with Cineza and the encounter with Fuega still did not heal. She even walked barefoot towards the centre of the Temple's grounds of prayer and meditation. The image faded only to return as Pyya knelt towards the Grand Pyre. The flame Mei helped save, when she rescued Pyya from the throes of the Wildfire state, burned weakly in the middle of the vast chamber. It merely flickered, barely alive, but still it shined. Pyya leaned forward to the fire and tossed some crushed, dried leaves on the fire, and the Grand Pyre grew taller, but only a by a little. Pyya sighed as she focused on the flame, much like Mei focused on the water. "Pyya," Mei whispered, and she reached out, thinking she was close enough to touch her, but all she grasped was a handful of water. The image of Pyya and the Grand Pyre both disappeared, the image disrupted. Her mentor needed her faith restored. Her Sisters needed their faith restored. While Fuega may have been the first Kasai and the founder of the Temple, Mei still knew the lessons of the flame and the philosophy of her path. Fuega may have despaired, but Mei would not give in. "I..." Mei looked up at Korin, who stared at her through closed eyes. "I know what I need to do. I need to head to the Furnace of Eight Divisions without delay. Pyya... my sisters... they need me now more than ever. They will be my strength. Through them, I will not fear anything! Not Fuega... not even my own power!" Korin nodded in approval. "Good. Good." He then floated over to a shelf and grabbed a small cloth pouch. He then tossed it to Mei who caught it. "That is a bag of my senzu beans. They are hard to come by so be careful with their use. But they should come in handy." "You know the thing about tigers?" Korin said as he accompanied Mei to the edge of his tower. "Tigers are big, strong and fast, but they are hunters. Stalkers. They prefer to attack by surprise. Stand your ground against Fuega no matter what, and your courage will cach her off guard. Also, tigers have big tongues. It may be dangerous, but if you can catch Fuega's words and somehow make her bite her own tongue, it may stun her long enough for you to do something big. Just be careful, because she seems to have a knack for getting into people's heads. Kind of like me, but not nearly as nice." Mei climbed onto the railing but then turned to Korin. "I'm sorry I have to leave so soon," she said, "Thank you so much for all your help though." "Ah, I didn't really do anything," Korin replied. "You just needed a little help. It was nice to meet you though, Mei Xing. I wish you good luck when you finally face. Fuega." Mei saluted Korin with her two fingers off the brow before pushing off against the rail and into the sky. Mei's fiery red aura blazed to life around her as she headed towards Mount Five Element. The time for doubt was over. The time for action was now. Soon she would be face to face with her master in the most difficult battle. of her life. The Furnace waited. *** WC: 1500 TWC: 5705 |
