Goten had no idea why people meditated under water falls. It was silly but Ping seemed to think it was great training. It had been about five minutes since he had sat down and closed his eyes and he snuck a peek at the panda.

“Psssst. Ping. You awake...?” Goten said in a hissing whisper.

“Shhh! Quiet Goten! Meditate!” Came the low, almost sleepy (yet oddly gruff) reply of the Panda sitting on the rock next to him.

“I can’t.”

Ping just ignored him, never having opened an eye nor moved while meditating.

Goten shrugged and went back to sitting under the waterfall. It was unseasonably cold and Ping had said it was good for the spirit. Goten doubted that he knew the secrets of Ki but he humored his friend anyway.

“So... Ping.”

Ping shot him an intense look as if to say ‘shut the hell up!’ before turning back to his meditation. This didn’t phase Goten who just went right on talking.

“Is this what you use to do, you know, in the old day?”

With a heavy sigh Ping gave up on trying to meditate and just looked at Goten, “What old days? You mean like back when I was human and all that?”

“Yeah- what was that like?”

Ping seemed to ponder this for a long while, letting the question hang in the air.

“Well... I guess I was a lot like you. See, I was from up north. Not too far, but in an area that’s now controlled by the red ribbon.”

“Like up near Muscle Tower?” Goten interjected.

“Closer to Jingeru Village. A little west of it actually. I grew up there with my family. It was a nice, kind of backwater, place high up in the mountains. Nothing beats the cold air up there.”

Goten looked a little confused, “Why don’t we just pop on over there. I’m sure your family would love to see you.”

Ping sighed and shook his head, “No... no. It’s been far too long and now I’m... I’m like this.” He explained with a little motion towards his fur.

Goten nodded, enthralled by the story. Ping continued,

“See I use to be a martial artist. I trained with my father- he was the best in the whole world, or so I thought until I saw you saiyan types and aliens and what not... but he was still amazing.”

A wan, nostalgic, look overcame Ping’s bear features and he looked distantly as if he could see his father practicing his kata somewhere in the distance.

“He almost won the world martial arts tournament a few times you know. He was beat by Master Roshi and the like- a real, genuine, old school, master arts master. Students use to come to train under him from around the world.”

The story enchanted Goten who sat transfixed under the waterfall,

“It wasn’t until I was a teeager like you and pig headed that I got into the trouble that turned me into... this. I was just like you- full of piss and vinegar and ready to take on the world. I use to put on a bear mask and go pick on the local bandits and bullies. I fancied myself something of a superhero- the impossible martial artist who could strike like lightning and kick like thunder. I was the bane of every criminal in the northern region! I loved it Goten- and I really miss it. Being able to train with you and watch you take them out... it reminds me of the old days when I use to do the same thing.”

Goten was nodding as Ping spoke, never interrupting for fear of him stopping.

“Well... all good things need to come to an end and... well one day I picked on the wrong person. See, I had got it in my head that I was the best and brightest martial artist in the whole region and had got myself something of an attitude. I... kinda lost my way. I started to pick fights rather than stop them- just to test myself. I’d hear of some tough guy and the next morning I’d set out the challenge him. I’d either goad him into fighting me or straight up challenge him to a match. I’d win most of the time, or train until I could beat anyone who could best me. I had it all Goten... well at least until SHE happened to me.”

The way he spoke sounded like “she” was an infection or a force of nature... and maybe she was.

“One day I heard of a witch in a town to the east. Like normal, I hurried on over at top speed and when I got there I saw the ugliest creature I ever saw. I jumped the gun and just assumed she was evil. You know how it goes- there are no ugly heroes right? Well, I was wrong. You see, she was a good witch. She had been in town to cure a blight on the crops that had been caused by overfarming and when I attacked her- I disrupted the ritual that had taken weeks to prepare. That place is still blighted to this very day. I’ve been back a few times and no one lives there now... my hubris caused the entire little town to shrivel up and move away. Pride his a horrible thing Goten... a terrible, horrible thing.”

Ping looked lost for a moment. Goten, timidly, encouraged him to continued,

“What happened next?”

“Next? Well I punched her square in her ugly, crooked nose!”

Ping laughed uproariously but it soon subsided and he looked a bit ashamed,

“Yeah... I punched her and she cursed me. But not before she beat the living tar out of me with magic. I thought martial arts was the only way to be strong and... man, was I wrong. She beat me up and down the street, to the right and to the left. By the time she was done with me I was more black and blue than I am black and white today... yeah, she got me good. Then she cursed me and I woke up in this body- a panda like the mask I wore.”

Goten looked away, ashamed for his friend. What a horrible fate.

“Yep- that’s when I just kind of lost touch with the world... I wandered for years.”

“You must remember some of it, right?”

“You want to hear that story Goten? Well, here it goes...”

“I wandered for years in the body of a bear, submerged by the bear’s consciousness. Its urges, its needs, its lifestyle. It took me a full six months to realize that who I was and another six before I could fully assert my control over my new form. Imagine trying to walk again, to speak again, to think like a human again- I had to do all that alone in the bamboo forests that had become my home. I slept in caves, hunted prey, ate raw animal flesh, and gnawed on bamboo-”

“Did you... you know... poop in the woods?” Goten asked immaturely, totally killing the mood.

Ping sighed, he shouldn’t have been so serious with Goten or expected him not to make a poop related comment when it was so ripe for the picking,

“Yes... yes Goten. I pooped in the woods. Now, can I continue?”

Goten blinked a few times, the frigid spray from the falls getting in his eyes a bit, “Oh, yeah... sure. Didn’t mean to interrupt.”

“No, no- we can stop if you want.”

“PIIIING!” Goten maligned and the bear frowned,

“Fine, fine.” He said adjusting himself on the wet rock he was sitting on. The falls they were sitting under was a glacial runoff and the rock was positioned perfectly to get the brunt of the flow.

“Well... it took me years but finally I was back to my old self, or as close as I was going to get. I rejoined civilization, registering a new identity as an immigrant. They didn’t ask questions, I didn’t give them any trouble. I thought about opening a martial arts school again but, truth be told, I was out of shape and in a new body. It didn’t work like it used to and I was scared that if I tried to train with anyone I’d hurt them.”

Goten shrugged, “Yeah... I guess I could see that.”

“And... well I kind of fell into the private investigator line of work after a while and that was what I was doing ever since.”

Goten nodded, he’d learned a lot about his friend today and managed to endure the icy water pounding on his back while he did it.

“Ping... thanks. That really put some things in perspective for me.”

“I thought it might Goten.” Ping explained as he slowly stood up. They way he stood made him look very old, like the way an old man might begrudgingly get up from his chair after reading the paper for a few hours. Goten saw his friend in a new light- he’d overcome tragedy and came out stronger for it. Goten had had that in his life as well- though not as much. He also identified with the fact that Ping had been cursed due to his pride- the least desirable trait that Goten possessed in abundance thanks to his closeness to Trunks and the Briefs in general.

Goten had a long way to go but he was sure that if he wanted to reach wherever he was going- he had better stay on the straight and narrow. You never know when you’ll piss off the wrong person and they could change your life for the worse... forever.
