It was dark now, aside from the sky above which was littered with little pin holes of light and star dust that scattered all across the heavens, letting them know just how small they really were. Tapion stared up at it as he walked along, Liza leading the way like usual. They had done a good job of making up for lost time with their earlier sprinting and chasing routine, but now the mood had turned back to a more relaxing one and their pace had adjusted to match it. The sound of their footsteps along the road was mesmerizing and honestly therapeutic. He inhaled gently as he strolled and observed the sound, his pointed ears twitching slightly every now and then as a bit of loose gravel was skipped over. The soles of his feet were a little sore and achy from all the walking recently, but otherwise, he was feeling pretty good. Liza had done a marvelous job at patching him up and he wondered just how long she would stick around. He wasn't sure what she was getting out of all this exactly, but he was glad to have her along for the time being. With her cooking skills and ability to sew up a wound; she was an invaluable addition to the party. WC: 228 |

"Beautiful out here tonight, isn't it?" she asked from up ahead. Her voice drifted back on the still night air and found Tapion's pointed ears, which perked up ever so slightly at the sound of her tone. He looked from the sky above to the surrounding area and nodded in response, not bothering to give any sort of audible reply. They both knew where they were, at this moment in time and how peaceful and soothing it was to the soul. There were no need for words out here or any other nonsense, it was just you and the open road, your footsteps, your thoughts and all of your baggage and demons too. The trick was to try and leave them in the dust, while you continued on down the road feeling glad. This was something that the Konatsian Knight practiced as often as he could and he found it relaxing. It was a sort of traveling, on the go meditation if you will. A walking, waking state relaxing exercise that observed your own consciousness and decided that it didn't want to dwell on the past nor the future, but the here and now, right here in this moment, with this single inhalation and this current foot step. It was a wonderful thing to try and accomplish and whenever you found yourself drifting away from that thought pattern, it was as simple as acknowledging it and taking another breath to bring yourself right back in. He did this repeatedly as they traveled, keeping the peace with the war that would otherwise be waging inside his head. WC: 278 TWC: 506 |

The air continued to grow cooler as they continued down the path. They were steadily climbing in elevation and the path was eventually winding its way up into the mountains. He smiled softly as he realized they were getting higher up, as this was a clear sign of progress to the Konatsian swordsman. Tapion peaked behind him, having a strange feeling that they were being followed. He had been sensing it for some time, but he hadn't thought too much of it. If someone was pursuing them, it was most likely just another traveler out on the road or perhaps one of Liza's men come to give her something she had left behind. He didn't pay it much attention, considering he was armed and feeling pretty healthy considering all he had been through. If someone was planning to jump them out here on the mountain road, they would certainly have their hands full. He wasn't entirely sure what Liza might be capable of, but judging by her appearance and the way in which she carried herself, he imagined she could take care of herself. After all, she was the leader of her clan and you didn't gain such a status by being a lazy bum. She was in good shape and had a nice fit body, which was only further reason to believe that she was capable of defending herself and watching her own ass. Though, in all honesty, the swordsman from Konats didn't mind the view from back here one bit... WC: 263 TWC: 769 |

"Do you sense it too?" she wondered, peaking over her shoulder and looking back at the swordsman from another world. She noticed his orange mohawk in the darkness and the shadow of his sword, poking out from behind his shoulder. She had picked up on the sense of someone following them, just as Tapion had and she wasn't too comfortable with it. She new she could handle herself and when the time came, she would fight with everything she had to survive, but she would rather not get into a mugging attempt out here on the mountain pass tonight. It was so peaceful and serene and she didn't want to lose that, not now. "Yes..." replied Tapion, peaking over his own shoulder to see if there was anyone in sight. He saw no one on the path behind them and he continued to stroll along casually, trying not to alert whomever it was to the fact that they had sensed them. Tapion only hoped that it was just one of them, and not many. If there were several people, it was going to turn from bad to ugly, fast. The Konatsian kept his wits about him and continued moving, knowing that sooner or later they would have to make a decision. They would need to turn and face this could be threat, or get off the path altogether and wait for it to pass them by. If they hid in the shadows and suppressed their energy, they might be able to remain hidden long enough for this follower to go on about their way. If they did it right, this might also give them a good chance to get a look at whoever or whatever it was that had been stalking them for the last hour or so. "So, what should we do?" asked Liza. The pair decided to duck off the side of the path and wait to see who was coming up behind them at a rather rapid pace. They found cover behind a rather large boulder that had apparently rolled down from higher up the mountain and come to rest here on the side of the path. Smaller chunks and fragments had broken off and were scattered around the area, leaving a trail of its journey. The Konatsian with the orange mohawk inhaled slowly and tried to remain calm as he kept his eyes peeled on the path. Any moment now, whomever had been following them would surely appear. Then it was just a matter of deciding whether or not they would jump out and grab them or not. It all depended on who, or what it was and if they appeared to have hostile intentions or not. Tapion was a firm believer in striking first, when there was a clear view that your opponent was going to hurt you. Why way to get hit? He would strike preemptively and strike hard, ending the conflict before it ever had the chance to begin in the first place. There was no sense in risking harm to yourself or others and now that Liza had joined the party, he felt like he had a certain obligation to keep her safe from harm. He wasn't going to go diving in front of any bullets just yet, but he would definitely snatch some pesky stalker up in a choke hold for her. Then, she could deliver the interrogation while he cinched up the noose for good measure. "See anything yet?" whispered Liza, nudging Tapion on his leg to let him know where she was in relation to himself and the giant boulder. The swordsman continued to watch the path, unwavering and silent, looking for any signs of their follower. There was nothing for the longest time, just the sound of crickets in the tall grass and the occasional hoot owl higher up the path. They were climbing into higher mountain country and they would soon be facing all kinds of strange wildlife. Perhaps this was merely what was following them up the trail? Some sort of coyote or fox out looking for a meal late at night? Perhaps it had simply picked up on their scent and had been trying to catch up with them as they ascended the mountain pass and made their way ever closer to the land of Korin. "There..." whispered the Konatsian, finally catching sight of a shadowy figure coming along on the path. WC: 452 TWC: 1,536 |

To the Konatsian's surprise, it was not a someone, but a something that came wandering down the path in pursuit of them. He was instantly relieved when he saw the creature's whitish paws step into view from the shadows. It was dark, but the light of the star dust and sky above was enough to see quite clearly through the area. His eyes had adjusted rather well and he was looking right at some sort of wild dog or something. He raised a single eyebrow, slowly as he watched the beast. It stopped suddenly and sniffed at the ground. The swordsman wondered if it would be able to sniff out their current hiding place. WC: 124 TWC: 1,660 |

Obviously it had followed them this far, so what was another couple of yards off the path and around a large rock? It wasn't going to be long before it located them, but at least it didn't appear to be hostile. Like his earlier assumptions, it seemed this was just a hungry animal, out hiking the path, looking for something to eat. Tapion didn't blame the beast and he had no ill will against it. In fact, he was trying to remember the last time he had actually eaten and he looked down at his own empty feeling stomach, knowing it had been a long ass time. WC: 234 TWC: 1,894 |

"Oh my god a puppy dog!!!" blurted Liza suddenly, causing Tapion to almost jump out of his own skin. He hadn't expected the woman to shout out like that, especially since they had been hiding out and being so quiet. Liza went racing past Tapion, kicking up dirt in his face as she sprinted straight toward the white furred dog with her arms outstretched. "Mwah mwah mwah, Come'ere little doggy!" she pleaded, rushing right onto the path and confronting the animal. The Konatsian swordsman watched quietly from his position behind the boulder, unsure of what to make of it. Did she know the dog, or was she just a wild animal lover? He couldn't be sure, but he was entertained enough to sit back and enjoy the show. WC: 138 TWC: 2,032 |

"Oh my god! Oh my god! Hey! Hey come quick, I think something's wrong with it! It appears to be injured! Come help me would ya?!" Liza's words provoked Tapion's attention and he sighed before stepping around the boulder and moving to join the female shinobi on the path. As he approached, he did so slowly and calmly, trying not to startle the animal and cause it to run away. If it was truly injured, they didn't want it escaping before they were able to help it recover. People were one thing and Tapion could usually take or leave most of 'em, but animals were a different story. Rarely did they deserve whatever ill fates they had been exposed to and most of them were at the hands of man anyway. It was a crying shame and the swordsman didn't dig it one bit. "So... what seems to be the trouble?" he asked quietly, crouching down and looking the animal in the eyes. To his surprise, the beast appeared to have two different colors eyes. One was blue and the other brown and he inhaled deeply as he looked deep into them, almost sure he could see the animal's very soul staring back at him. He felt some sort of powerful presence coming from the beast and he wondered if that was what he had been sensing all this time following them. This was surely no ordinary animal and Tapion wondered if there was something deeper going on here. He shrugged, turning his attention back to Liza. She had done well enough to patch him up, so he figured she'd be able to take care of the pooch just the same. Suddenly a wet, slobbery tongue landed upon Tapion's face and licked from his chin, all the way up to his golden hued headband. The swordsman paused, freezing in place and gritting his teeth. He hadn't at all been prepared for this sudden sensation and he tried his best to keep from blurting out loud. "Wha..." he mumbled, slowly shifting his eyes toward Liza. The shinobi was already giggling at him with her hands cupped over her mouth. "It looks like you've made a new friend!" She teased, pointing toward its wagging tail. "If I didn't know any better, I'd say it feels better already! Now think... what should we call... ummm" she paused for a moment, poking her head downward slightly to check the dog's undercarriage. Once she had gotten her answer, she popped back up and finished asking her question. "...her?" WC: 450 TWC: 2,482 |

"Hmm, good question." Tapion pondered the question, wondering what a good name would be for the animal. He looked it over, his eyes moving over its whitish hued fur and noticed the darker spots and splotches here and there. The creature looked a little wild, especially with the look in her different colored eyes. It was interesting to the swordsman, since he had never met a creature quite like this on Earth before. He rubbed his chin in thought, trying to come up with a name. "How about we call her... Dog?" suggested the Konatsian swordsman, looking over at Liza to see if she liked the name. "What?! Are you kidding me? Dog is way too generic, we need something with a little spice, something cool, something awesome! Hmmm, let's see. How about... Reagan!" "Reagan? How'd you come up with that one?" questioned the Knight, looking from her to the dog and back again. "I had a friend when I was much younger named Regan, in fact, he was one of the boys I used to go to the old windmill with. We were pretty close, but then he moved away one day. I actually went to that bridge we met on and waved him goodbye while he was riding off in a carriage. It was a sad day that I'll never forget, but he was a great friend. His hair was kind of white like this ole girl here, so that's what reminded me of him. So, what do you think?!" Once she had finished telling her tale, she turned to Tapion to see what he thought about the name. The swordsman was still crouching in front of the beast, still getting licked occasionally and still rubbing his chin lightly in thought. This animal surely was interesting and so was Liza's story. He nodded his head at last and looked from the animal to the woman beside him. "Yes... Ray gun, it's perfect! I like it..." He turned his attention back toward the dog, who barked at the sound of her new name. It appeared, that Raygun liked it as well! Now with the matter of names out of the way and taken care of, there was the issue of this apparent injury the beast had. "How's she looking doc?" wondered the Konatsian Knight, hoping their new pal was going to be alright. WC: 424 TWC: 2,906 |
