The Mansion Job

The guard was pacing back and forth, scanning the area. He was doing a pretty good job of it too, I mean, who expects an intruder to fly over their head? Yadorigi grinned in the darkness as he eased himself through the air above the mansion.

It should be a quick job really, most of the security was outside the house it seemed, and he could get past most of them by using his flight. He was really glad he had learned that particular trick, it had really come in handy for traveling and occasionally, his jobs.

Going in an upstairs window, he landed softly and walked quietly down the carpeted hallway towards the center of the place. He stopped at a corner and waited, listening for the sounds of any movement of guards inside the place. Nothing.

He had considered using his flight all the way through, but it had felt a bit like cheating, and these were very fine carpets, it was a crime to not walk on them. They were a deep purple, the owner of the house didn’t lack for hubris, called himself Lord something or other. It wasn’t important to the job, so Yadorigi hadn’t bothered learning it.

What was important was building schematics and passcodes. As usual, Samael’s intel had been impeccable, giving him everything he needed to pull off the job quickly, cleanly, and quietly. Also, as usual, he wasn’t exactly sure what it was he was stealing tonight. Oh, he had a description of what it looked like so he took the right thing, but he didn’t know what it did or even what it was called.

Turning right at the next intersection of hallways, he continued in towards the center of the massive structure. It seemed hard to even classify as a home it was so big. Not to mention the man ran a business out of part of it. That was one reason he had come in on the west side. The main entrance was on the south side, much too exposed to go in there, and the business had been on the east side. Too high a risk that he’d run into an employee working late.

The whole thing had been built into the face of a cliff, so the north side hadn’t been an option at all. It also hid just how massive the mansion was. It already looked large from the outside, but nearly three quarters of the structure was within the cliff, the part that was sticking out was the tip of the iceberg.

His hearing picked up the shuffling of feet and the rub of clothing as someone moved his way and he dipped into an open door. Quickly glancing around the dark room, it looked like an extra office of some kind. A nice wooden desk with two chairs facing the front of it, a high backed chair behind it. Those were the only pieces of furniture in there. A computer monitor sat on top of the desk and cast a dull blue glow at the back wall, thankfully away from Yadorigi.

“Section 2 clear, heading into section 1,” announced a man as he shuffled along the hallway. Yadorigi heard the door just down the hallway open and the man shuffle into it. The guard drug his feet and so it was easy to track his movements. The young Saiyan wasn’t sure whether or not to move past while the man while he was in there, but decided it was too risky. Knowing his walking path was one thing, but knowing where he was looking was another.

The man worked his way across the hallway to another room, spent some time there. Yadorigi chewed his lip a bit. He wasn’t afraid of being found, he could deal with the guard just fine, but if he knocked the guy unconscious, it increased the likelihood of the whole complex going on alert, which would make his life much more difficult.

As the guy closed the door of the room across the hallway, Yadorigi made up his mind. The guard drug his feet as he made his way in through the open door. The guy was toting a small submachine gun, was dressed all in black, and had heavy combat boots. His hair was trimmed very short, like Yadorigi had seen with a lot of the military here on Earth.

He had considered floating up to the top of the room, but that had had some risk as well, so instead he had used his flight, but he had simply floated past the guard as the man went towards and around the desk. Yadorigi floated out into the hallway and went down to the next doorway and pressed himself against the small indention in the hallway for the next door.

The guard came out and closed the door that had been open on the next office and continued to work his way down the hallway. When he went into the next room, Yadorigi let out his held breath and continued back the way the guard had come from.

A few intersections later he came to the back of the normal ‘house’ portion of the complex where the hallway ended in a big wooden door. It wasn’t only wood, if his intel was good, it was a dressed up steel door that separated the house from the part that was in the cliff.

Moving over to a panel on the right, he counted up four from the floor and slid the false wall piece out of the way to reveal a keypad. Checking behind him first, he hastily put in the code and a little red light switched to yellow for a moment before changing to green. A little door set in the larger door popped open. Apparently a different code opened the whole big thing, but either they didn’t have that code for him, or they had decided it wasn’t necessary for him to know it.

Walking up to the door, he peered inside. The house grounds and the main house were all monitored with simply guards, but the business had security cameras, another reason Yadorigi had avoided that side. This back portion also had cameras, so he looked up in the corner where he knew he would find one pointed at the little door.

Pointing his finger at it, while remaining in the darkness of the hallway, he closed his eyes and focused his mind. Opening his eyes again, he flicked his finger up and the camera twisted and pointed at the ceiling. These mind powers were almost as handy as his flight. Finished with that, he stepped through the door, and pulled it closed behind him.

This portion of the complex was completely different than the house portion. The house had been lavish, with the purple carpets and dark hand carved wood paneling. Nice furniture, nice lighting, no security cameras or exposed wiring. Back here everything was much more clinical, like the research laboratories that you see in movies. Things were well lit, all the walls were white. Where it wasn’t a high gloss white painted wall, it was lots of glass and stainless steel.

He went over to a series of stainless steel lockers and counted from the right until he was at the third one over and opened it up. Inside was a full lab suit, almost like a hazmat suit but all white and with less tubing. Quickly he began to pull it on, he currently stuck out like a sore thumb in this lab setting, dressed in all dark colors in such a bright environment.

Originally he had wondered what it would look like with him walking around the place. While he wasn’t exactly a pipsqueak, he wasn’t the tallest either, but the suit fit him just fine as he zipped up the front of it and flipped on the top portion to cover his head. It wasn’t air tight or anything, hence why he didn’t need all the tubing like a hazmat, but it covered him completely. Probably more a matter of cleanliness.

The gloves were separate and he put those on last. He didn’t care too much for gloves, he felt like they inhibited him in some way even though he was able to manipulate ki just the same regardless. Looking himself over real quick, he nodded to himself in satisfaction and started down the hallway.

Turning the corner, he nearly ran into another guy in a lab researcher outfit. Dodging to the side, he mumbled an,” Excuse me, sorry.”

“That’s alright,” the person said. They sounded incredibly tired as they continued on. It was a close call, one Yadorigi would prefer to avoid moving forward.

There were a couple cameras here and there, but now that he was wearing the lab gear, he didn’t worry about it too much. A couple of times he passed some other researchers and once he passed a security guy, but none of them looked too closely at him. The security guy had been armed to the teeth, but apparently anyone wearing the right outfit got a pass from his intense scrutiny. Or Samael had paid him off. There was never any way of knowing what all the man had moving behind the scenes.

It wasn’t long before he was at another security door. Here was where things got interesting. Up to that point, the details of the operation had been excellent. Past this door, they got a little more vague. Also, they didn’t have the code for him this time. This door had a keycard lock and apparently nobody with one with access had been available.

So he unzipped his lab gear and pulled out his phone, checked the time. He was a little early, but he had allowed time in the schedule for any… difficulties getting to this point. Putting his phone back, he zipped his disguise back up and waited. There was supposed to be a guy coming through the door around this time and his keycard was the one that would get Yadorigi through to the next area. All the young Saiyan had to do was grab it off of him.

After a couple of minutes waiting, the door clicked and swung open, letting a man through. He eyed Yadorigi suspiciously as he passed. With good reason, the young Saiyan supposed. In the blink of an eye Yadorigi flashed forward, snatched the keycard from the man’s belt and returned to his spot.

The man must have felt a gust of wind from the quick exchange cause he looked back at Yadorigi and then around himself with a very confused face. Luckily he didn’t notice that his keycard was gone and simply shook his head and left.

Breathing a sigh of relief, Yadorigi waited for the man to go down the hallway some and turn a corner. Stepping up to a door, he slid it in the reader and the door opened up again. He probably could’ve made it through the opening after the man went through and before it closed again, but that would’ve probably tipped off the guy into going to look for a guard. Plus, he needed the keycard to get back through the door to leave.

Moving to the next door in the hallway, he read the label on the door. Lab X1. He needed to find the one that would say Lab X30, so he had some ways to go yet. He worked his way down the hallway, checking the doors every now and again to make sure he was on the right track. Finally finding the door, he tried the keycard again and thankfully the little light went green and the door clicked. The other doors had opened for him, but this one simply seemed to disengage a lock and he had to pull it open himself.

The room beyond was very dimly lit and he couldn’t find a lightswitch so he simply started looking for what he came fore. He could only make out a handful of shapes, but it only took him a minute until he saw what he was after on a table. It was a metal cylinder with a code written on the side of it in black marker. There was a little window set in the side of the cylinder and a green liquid glowed slightly within it. Stepping up to the table, he unzipped his lab gear some to pull out a photo. He compared the object in the photo with the one on the table and then flipped the photo over to compare the number written there with the number written on the canister. It wasn’t an exact number on the back of the photo actually, it was a range, but this canister was within the range.

Yadorigi had no idea what the stuff was, but he put the photo back in his pocket and zipped back up, picking up the canister,” Gotcha.”

As he turned to leave, he heard a rustling and he froze, beginning to pull out his power and ready himself for a fight. He couldn’t see anything moving in the dark but a small voice called out,” Hello?”

Yadorigi hesitated. This wasn’t part of the plan, the details had been impressive to this point, but beyond that one security door, they had been somewhat lacking. Chewing his lip a moment, he finally answered,” Who’s there?”

More shifting around in the dark brought his attention to some big object covered with a large bit of fabric. He moved closer as the voice spoke from within again,” If you don’t know, then you aren’t one of them. Will you help me?”

He should get going, do the job as intended, but something made him linger. Call it curiosity. Edging closer still, he gathered some of the fabric and pulled it back to reveal a large metal cage with a young woman inside. She looked human enough, similar facial structure, average size, similar looking anatomy, in a broad strokes kind of way.

However, her skin and hair were both completely red, and even calling it skin and hair was a stretch. She seemed to be made completely from stone, but as she blinked at him and spoke, the seeming carved statue moved as if it’s stone skin was as malleable as a human’s skin,” Please. Get me out of here.”

“What did they do to you?” he asked, still pondering whether or not to help her out. This was pretty far outside the scope of the job, letting some random lady loose from the lab.

The stone woman blinked at him with golden eyes and raised a stoney eyebrow,” Did to me? They locked me in this cage and ran experiments, what do you think they did? I thought that was sort of obvious given that I’m locked in a cage in a underground laboratory. Listen, just find a way to pull a couple of these bars out at the bottom, I’ll make my own way from there.”

“I mean, you look,” Yadorigi began, but cut himself short. He probably shouldn’t be talking considering he had a tail wrapped around his waist and he turned into a giant rampaging monster when the moon was full. He changed what he was going to say,” awful… of course I’ll help.”

“Thank you. Find something to wedge between the bars and maybe we can-” she began, but she cut off as Yadorigi reached out and grabbed hold of two of the bars and simply pulled them free at the bottom. Bending them up and out of the way, he offered her a hand. Eyes wide, she accepted his hand and stepped through,” Or, you know, you could just pull it apart with your bare hands, that works too. What the hell are you?”

Yadorigi smiled,” I thought about asking you the same thing. Don’t see a lot of red stone statues that move around and talk.”

“Right, I forget you Earthlings don’t get a lot of alien visitors.” she said, nodding and smiling. It was a nice smile. She kicked the side of her cage lightly,” I wonder why…”

Yadorigi chuckled. If it hadn’t been for the suit he was wearing, he’d show her his tail, but he simply settled for telling her,” I’m not from here either, but my people do look remarkably like humans so I guess I get away with it.”

“Right, plus the way you took apart that cage, I’m not sure they could put you in a lab real easy,” she said.

“Yeah....” Yadorigi smiled but the he looked around,” So, I’m sort of on a job, and breaking you out wasn’t the mission, you know?”

“Got it, I never saw you,” she got the hint.

“Ok, you good from here?” Yadorigi shouldn’t be lingering this long. It wasn’t his responsibility to help this chick. He just felt like it would be a waste to let her out if she was simply going to be put back in or get killed. The creature intrigued him.

“I’ll be alright,” nodding she started looking around the room, probably for a weapon of some kind. If she made a bloody exit, it might actually give a good cover for the theft he was committing. She found a scalpel on a nearby tray,” I can’t snap steel or anything, but I’m not useless.”

After picking up the canister he had actually come for, he nodded to her and made his way out of the room. As he slid the stolen keycard in the reader again and opened the door she whispered behind him,” I’ll give you a couple minutes head start, let me prop the door open when you leave.”

“Hey! Who let you out?” A man was walking briskly towards the open door. He pulled a communication device up to his mouth. Yadorigi acted quickly, rushing forward in the blink of an eye and slamming his fist into the man’s throat with his free hand, the other holding the cylinder as the glowing liquid inside sloshed a bit. There was a little hiss of static across the radio as the man squeezed the button on the side, but then he dropped it as he clutched at his ruined throat with both hands.

“Uh, hello?” came out of the radio as Yadorigi caught the falling device. The man in front of him sank to his knees as he began choking on his own blood.

“Uh, sorry about that,” Yadorigi tried to do his best impression of some random adult’s voice,” hit the button by accident.”

“10-4” came the reply. Yadorigi clicked off the radio and set it next to the man as he fell to the floor. The woman came up behind him and the young Saiyan looked at her. He expected to see shock, horror, or something like that in her eyes, but he saw nothing of the kind. If anything, she looked… approving.

He had made it this far in the job without having to kill anyone and now he had just bumped off some guy that had just been walking around doing his job. He wasn’t even a guard. Not that everyone Yadorigi was contracted to take care of was a demon inside, but he hadn’t even gotten paid for this. After a sigh and shrug he looked at the woman again and nodded before leaving.

“Take care then” she said as he left.

He turned around as he tucked the cylinder into his armpit and smiled at her,” You too. See you around.”

Leaving the lab was uneventful as he retraced his steps back to the entrance. He only saw one person and they had their nose buried in a folder of papers, muttering calculations to themselves and not being the least bit aware of Yadorigi passing them. As Yadorigi went past the guy, he clipped the stolen keycard to his belt, getting rid of that bit of evidence so it wouldn’t necessarily lead back to whoever had gotten him this lab outfit. Once he reached the locker, he unzipped and pulled off the lab gear and put it back in the locker he had taken it from.

Looking behind him, he wondered how the woman had done so far. She hadn’t had a lab outfit and so she would’ve gone slower, but there hadn’t been anyone in most of the hallways, so he figured she was alright. Not your problem he reminded himself as he went over to the keypad and punched in the code.

The door popped open and he went back out onto the purple carpets. Moving through the house proved to be even easier than when he had come in. Didn’t see a single guard. It was almost eery, but Yadorigi wasn’t about to be upset about a smooth exit.

He found the open window he had come in and peeked out before he left. None of the guards seemed to be nearby. Looking behind him again, he stepped up onto the window sill and leapt off into the night, flying up and away. Time to go deliver the goods to Samael. Whatever it was.
