The ring of clashing weapons, the thump of sword and quarterstaff, the grunt of his grappling, these were the morning sounds. These were the familiar sounds he had been growing accustomed to for some time. Tien had grown to adulthood with these combat sounds, and he felt most at home in the ring with them. His sweat beaded along his brow and he ignored it. The beginner may take the time to indulge comfort, but the master knew comfort was an illusion. An Illusion not worthy of the attention. Or at least that was what his mentors had taught him. Jin went through the circles she had been taught in the correct style as she done every morning for months. Though she had not progressed as far as he would have liked recently, she was eager. Jin moved into the first defensive stance with her sword guarding her front, or the first sector of the prime circle. She shifted her blade to the left, the morning light catching the steel and painting it a bright orange. The second position was her rear guard. From this position she was able to block attacks from the side or swing into a parry from the opposite direction if need be. Or she could spin and switch back into a Standard Guard facing the third sector, or rear. But this was all the theories of strategy. Jin herself had not mastered all it had to offer. They had claimed a small patch of the smooth grass field. She went through the motions of her training with little thought as to their mechanics. The first circle, at least with a single blade, should have been very familiar to her. She lunged and parried, fighting imaginary opponents while going through appropriate motions and stances. The exertion was a welcome distraction from life. It was a kind of relaxing meditation for them both. When Tien would move through the stances and motions of the exercises and his mind would slip away. It was just reaction and instinct for him. Tien thrusted with his own sword, his arm jabbing viciously at various locations around his first circle. His orientation and his movements shifted as the circle did. It was all flawlessly fluid at least from as far as he could tell. He imagined an enemy approach suddenly from behind. He spun on his toes and the sword shot a lunge behind him at the back. His spin shifted the circle. It was important to keep the orientation of the circles and sections in mind as he was moving. Eventually he would become so familiar that the sectors and the circles would not be needed. For now, however, he had hardly gotten into enough of a mindset for that achievement. He needed to practice the proper techniques for each sector before proceeding.. The idea was to maintain an offensive stance while simultaneously keeping up a strong defense. Most of the defense was oriented around finesse and deflecting. This was only truly managed with the use of two weapons in hand. He would have to make due with the slightly less formidable style with just one sword. But in his mind he felt they were both lacking something that morning. The movements are all good, but he wasn't really paying the training the attention it needed. He was simply practicing, not fighting. He hated the practice sessions where he was alone and there was no need to perform correctly. If there was no punishment is was fake. It was not as fine and crisp as it was if the element of competition arose somewhere along the line. Competition, specifically between martial artists, was never too difficult to find. He sensed there was competition between Jin and himself, despite being student and teacher. Tien stood straight, taking a momentary rest from his training to look around himself. His arm fell by his side and his body coated itself with sweat. "It's not everyday we actually spar with one another." He said, his voice pleasant and cheery, though deep. "Enough of that for now." Jin ended her exercise, with a final pass at an invisible threat. She gave him a subtle nod, needing no other words to confirm her agreement to this. After the two had both positioned themselves apart from each other, Jin swung her sword once and twice, stretching her shoulders and arms out. "Should we get to it?" She asked, looking impatiently at Tien for his confirmation to begin. He nodded and spread his feet below him, leaning slightly with the sword held in front of him. It was the Low Guard that he decided to take up to test her. Jin smiled and held her sword tight. "I recognize your stance. What are you going to do if I manage to get past your defense?” She questioned, starting to circle Tien with wide strafes. The fact that the she instantly recognized his stance unsettled him. Jin had clearly spent a lot of time studying his movements, which impressed him to some degree. he stepped smoothly into the circling motion as well. Jin made a hard stroke downward and the combat began. Steel clashed against steel as her weapon came down hard on his. He would have ideally deflected the blow and Moved around the smaller woman, but the strength behind it that he hadn't accounted for made deflection impossible. Instead Tien was forced to use both arms to block the strike from knocking his sword out of his hand. The blades slid against each other for a moment before Jin pulled away and reset. Tien felt his fingers tingling. He imagined that she would assume that he purposefully use a feebly small defense against her very first attack. But she seemed to know exactly how to counter the him style as Tien made a few side passes and lunges. Every attack he made was met with a vicious deflection and a quick answering press. Her weapon seemed to move with a life of its own. He was constantly forced into the defensive as Jin felt out his style more and more. He had to find a falter in all of her movements, but he could barely analyze her with all the motion she was forcing him into. Neither of the two received a moment's respite between assaults. If it came down to simply tiring out the other, then he had the clear advantage over her. He forced his mind to watch the woman critically while they fought. Steel clashed and ground together as the two met over and over again. Each blow made his arm act in a way that showed she was losing her edge and it was easy for him to break away and gain ground. He didn't need much room or momentum to swing his blade, and he searched for an opportunity where he could capitalize on that. With the next downward strike, Tien side-stepped towards her sword arm. He let the weapon slip past his torso harmlessly. He brought his blade up to slice across the outside of Jin's arm. The woman quickly moved away, turning the sword in her hand to face Tien as she did so, going through a series of proper movements in the process. She immediately returned to her assault, but for an instant there, Tien had her on the defensive. It was a small, but important detail in the progression of the fight that he hoped she picked up on. She seemed to understand as she had a wide grin across her face as she made sure not to allow herself to be taken in like that again. Despite her vicious onslaught during this match which he would normally advise against, he found himself quite intrigued by her risky strategy. She closed in, lunging again with her arm. Tien stepped in as well, knowing that the inner circle of the of his position was where to properly counter an opponent. As he stepped inwards, Tien slid his weapon past Jin's arm, towards the neck. His lunge was offset by a response that brought her sword close to his torso. Tien hauled himself around the woman and placed his body away from her. He exhaled half in exhaustion and half in humor. The younger warrior was really putting him through his paces. He decided to press the offensive one last time. He lunged forward, continuing with his thrusts. But he fainted the initial lunge and forced the other to attempt a perry. As her sword swung into place for the parry, Tien pulled back and did a counter thrust, curving in from the right forward section of his circle. And Jin knew it. Though she did, however, seem surprised to see it from him so suddenly. Jin spun back, turning her blade to push the deadly point of his feint downwards. Then she reversed her grip seamlessly and brought the edge of her pass to within an inch of Tien's neck. Tien stumbled backwards, loosing his footing and falling onto the floor in his attempt to roll back up a few inches away from her stance. "Yield then." She said, waving a hand and grinning gloatingly. Jin set her sword on her shoulder and held out a hand to help him up. Tien took it and was brought back to his feet. "I'm starting to get better right," She asked obliviously. Tien knew she was making an attempt to spare the older man some dignity. "You're getting better." He acknowledged, not wanting to seem resentful of her victory. Jin thumped him on the shoulder. Her words seemed to put some pride in Tien. "Pain and failure bring wisdom, we'll both learn from this one.” With that he began the long trek up from the field of the pasture with his sword sword near his chest. Wc: 1,645 Twc: 22,517 |

Winter presented a number of challenges on the mountain, but Jin was beginning to see its perks as well. Tiny footprints in the snow looked freshly made, the space between them short. 'A small animal, easily hunted, she thought. "What are you?" Jin muttered, her voice as soft as the gentle wind. She crouched to get a closer look at the prints. 'Little padded feet, small nails. A rabbit? A fox?' She began to look for other clues, things she might have missed, or were otherwise hidden. The snow wasn't overly disturbed, which made her think this animal wasn't in a hurry. Nothing had been hunting it. The bushes nearby were sparce, mostly jagged twigs little to no foliage. Any fruit or nuts that may have survived the cold were either gone, or their faint residue lay on the ground. When she studied the branches, she noticed small gnawing marks. "You're a rabbit, aren't you?" Whatever had been here had moved on. Jin's boots crunched in the snow, and she ducked under a low hanging branch that had cracked and broken from the pressure of ice. Snow fell on her shoulders and she dusted the white powder out of her hair. It was quiet. Silence wasn't something she genuinely cared for. Not complete, void-like silence. She felt it was unsettling. More than once, she looked over her shoulder, allowing her paranoia to distract her from her hunt. An eery feeling washed over her and her dark eyes darted. She felt.. exposed. Watched. But there was no one else. No movement or sound other than herself. Snow blanketed forestry stretched as far as the eye could see, and in this moment, she felt lonely. There wasn't a memory of living on the mountain were she could recall such a lack of sound. There was always noise birds bickering in the trees, cicadas beating. The forest was alive with the sounds of animals, the howling of wind, the roar of water. Here...things lay buried in the snow, waiting until the cold passed. It was a depressing realization. Jin kept her focus on the tracks, following them past the trees and into an open field. A burrow was the only explanation to her; someplace the animal could hide in such an environment. She guessed there had once been tall grasses that would have given adequate cover in the warmer seasons. Now, inches of snow spread like a heavy blanket over the vast expanse. White was far as the eye could see... and red. Squinting, Jin took a slow step towards where the tracks ended, spotting a crimson stain splattered messily against the pure ground. The snow was disheveled heavily the closer she moved, and tuffs of matted fur that had been pulled from the animal were a haunting omen. Something was killed here, but what, and by whom, she was unsure. There were no other print which suggested it had not been another land creature. A bird of prey, maybe? The woman circled the evidence, stopping when she noticed something obscured by the trodden snow. There were another set of prints. Human? The second pair looked like a person's although something was off. Were those... claws? She leaned close, running a finger along the indention. "This was no other hunter..." Jin reasoned, confused as to why she had not seen prints before. What was this? She looked around, trying to find some other detail, a piece of evidence to give her an idea of what happened. What creature was involved? As she looked down again, something flashed in the corner of her eye. A shadow raced across the snow from above. She jumped backwards, searching the skies. A dull winter grey, fat grey clouds obscuring the sky. But sure enough there was a black form, circling from above. Kiva squinted, stepping back to get a better look. It was growing closer, descending at an increasing rate. At last, it swooped forward and lowered itself to the ground. The creature in question was humanoid, covered in a layer of grey fur and from its back sprouted bat wings that sent powerful gusts of wind as it lowered. When it reached the floor, it did so with grace, stepping forward. It was a male, adorned in black pants. It hair was also black and when it raised a hand to its chin, Kiva saw the talon like claws that sprouted from his fingertips, deep and alluring, "My, my," he said in accent like none she had heard before, "Aren't you a delicious little treat." Snatching at the scabbard that hung from her hip, She held it out in warning. "What are you?" She kept her gaze level, preventing her voice from wavering in fear. In front of her stood a creature from an evil god she was sure. Some deformed poor soul who needed to be put from his misery. The man simply laughed at her question, making a show of flashing his pointed canines and catching a glint of light on his red eyes, "But what of you? Where do you come forth from? Have you never seen my kind before?" She had not. Jin answered with honesty, "I have not." The young woman eyed him wearily, following his movements and responding with her own when he tried to circle her. Jin glared at him, lunging forward and striking. The creature dodged the attack, flapping his wings once in order to propel himself backwards. She pressed forward lunging at his arm, matching his body language with her own. Squared shoulders and a tense jaw, the two began to dance with Jin throwing attacks and the demon evading them. After a few more failed attempts and the beginning signs of her arm growing fatigued, she slowed down. 'Conserve your energy.' Just as she started to slow, the demon took over, slashing at her. Jin shifted her blade, deflecting the blow with her weapon. Each strike left her wide open, nearly knocking the blade from her hands. But the demon did not take his shot. Instead he continued to toy with her. He was testing her. She shifted backwards, creating a foot of distance between her, and her opponent. Only then did she enter her proper stance, leveling her arms with her hips, and bringing her feet closer to one another. The demon demon began towards her with a slow methodical approach, attempting to circle around her once more. Her feet shifted in the slow to accommodate this, at multiple points she found herself nearly toppling over in order to protect her sides. However, she remained erect, and poised to attack should the demon come within striking range. The standoff allowed her arms to rest from the flurry of attacks she had performed earlier. It looked as if her opponent was considering abandoning the skirmish altogether from his lack of pursuit, but he soon closed in on the woman with surprising speed. Jin raised the sword to her chest, and soon after twisted her wrist outwards as she made a pass for his shoulder. The aggressor halted in his movements the same moment his wings expanded, and caught themselves on a lone gust of wind. His movements halted, and her attack passed by without connecting to him in the slightest. Jin pressed forward, approaching the demon while making several passes aimed for his chest and neck. he folded his wings together as he effortlessly avoided each strike. His body contorted, and twisted itself in order to keep away from the sword. Her strike swung over and around, swinging down past her left leg in a smooth well rounded arc. The strike would have done a good amount of damage if it had hit anything. She then tried to stop the sword to draw it into another strike, but was met with massive resistance. The momentum of the blade was just enough that as she tried to she tried to shift into another pass, it provided her foe with an opportunity to strike. A clawed hand launched forward aimed to either clasp around or tear across her neck. She shifted her blade into a one handed grip, allowing her mechanical arm to rise up high enough to defend against the demon. His claws raked across the exposed metal and wiring. His warped claws dug into her arm, pulling the woman towards him out of her stance. Jin wasted no time in arcing the blade outwards for his waist. She unexpectedly met resistance, though she followed through with the blow allowing the blade to quickly pass through whatever it had caught on. The grip on her arm eased away, and she stumbled backwards, creating distance between the two figures. She re-positioned herself, readying herself for another attempt. This time she kept her body centered instead of very forward. Her eyes lowered down to his waist, seeing exactly what her sword had met resistance with just a moment earlier. A slowly expanding crease of deep red, was beginning to seep blood onto the pure white snow beneath them. His lips parted into a twisted grin, where she expected to find grimace and pain. The blood was already beginning to cogulate on his form, skin stretching to cover the wound embedded in his form. This process occurred over the span of a few seconds leaving him not with a surely fatal wound, but nothing more than a thin scar. Centering her weight over her heels, she drew the sword into another strike, this time to the side over her shoulder, and kept the hand farther up the hilt to assist in it's descent. As she swung downward and sideways, she again slid her hand down along the hilt. The sword took a short arc, ending around the woman's hip. This time she was able to see the blade split the demon' skin and carve a wound deep into his shoulder down to his waist. This time she heard the demon let out a low pitched growl as her sword travelled across his body. Again the damage done to his being began to vanish, as skin quickly worked to close the wound. Jin backed away slightly, her eyes catching the gaze of the being before her. Wc: 1,705 Twc: 24,222 |

The snow was relentless, falling in a fine mist that could soak a person to the bone in a matter of moments. It was enough to make his usual position out on the porch obsolete. If his clothes got soaked from rain, it'd mean a fever spreading between the two. They needed all the meat they could hunt, especially considering how abysmally their current wares were. Unlike during the summer, the garden wasn't able to tend to their needs. He walked for some time; although precisely how long it took he had no idea. The fighting wasn't far off now, and occasionally the sound of clashing steel was just faintly audible above the freezing winds. And soon enough, as the snow covered man predicted, the clearing which contained a majority of the fighting was now within sight. The brisk air whipped around his face, in a sharp gust like icy fingernails as he peered so full of confusion through the jostling trees ahead of him. Through the mist and the smoke came the dark shadows. It wasn't hard to figure out who they were, or rather, who one of them was. The sound of snow being disturbed underfoot reached his ears from a separate direction. He pivoted his body to the left as he extended his left arm outwards. Intense flickering illumination accompanied the energy sphere, allowing him to momentarily catch a glimpse of a shifting shroud of darkness. Squelching and a distinct low humming that shifted into a cackle. The noise came from his rear now. From what he'd heard so far the voice could have been male, and all things considered, most likely allied with whoever was fighting Jin just on the opposite side of the clearing. He remained motionless, listening to the sound of snow crunching underfoot as his opponent circled him. it was when the noises ceased that Tien shifted on his feet bringing his arms diagonally across his torso in time to catch the full force of a blow which nearly lifted him from his feet. It didn't take long however, for him to regain his footing even with the undependable snow beneath his feet. From there he received no opening to launch his offensive. kicks, punches, a flurry of appendages were almost constantly forcing him to defend himself. The attacks were erratic and held no pattern that was discernible to him. During a particular moment in which the figure closed in on him closer than his other attacks had been, Tien adjusted himself accordingly. He was farther away from the clearing edge then, forcing him to retreat from eyesight of the other two individuals seemed to be the intended plan. Tien's hand clasped firmly onto his foes', fingers interlocking and folding over one another before either could retreat from their skirmish. His right knee came up to the inner thigh and the appropriate foot down towards the black figure's knee, taking support from the appendage. His hands had formed into the half triangle long before he brought the open triangle level with the kneeling creature. "Kikoho!" Regardless of the improper hand formation, the condensed square of ki that he summoned enveloped the creature at his feet during it's descent. The resulting explosion of earth, snow and signed air overwhelmed his vision in all three eyes. There was little evidence left of his opponent by the time the light subsided, save for the scaled hand which still clung tightly to his fingers. |

Tien regarded the remaining limbs of his deceased foe with distinct distaste. The hand which clung to his fingers were pried away easily enough and discarded in a patch of soaked grass. The skirmish between Jin and her opponent interrupted his thoughts entirely before he could ponder on the reasoning behind the ambush, or the lack thereof. Jin's face sunk some, something more fitting of the morbid realization while watching life’s various moments unfold around her. She nods in subtle agreement while sliding her right foot back a little. “Well.” she muttered underneath her breath, coming to a full stop to square off with the winged demon yet again. The wind had died down considerably then, allowing her to take note of the lack of sound in the surrounding forest. Without further pause Jin approached to strike. She dips slightly low, bobbing to her right to circle slightly around him, then brought the sword in for a feinting jab at his stomach. She moved with speed, and with grace, flawlessly transitioning into a follow up despite the feint offering her no advantage. It did, however, lead seamlessly into a fit of rapid jabs the likes of which kept her opponent just out of arms reach for the time being. She moved solely on muscle memory, her limbs becoming little more than a blur as the sword was worked back and forth faster and faster to forcibly take the ground that she had lost. She cut and thrusts, aiming for knees, shoulders, feet, hands, elbows, hips, ribs; countless sections of his body aimed for with plenty of attacks following them to aim for others. While the attacks were aggressive, oppressive, they did little other than wear down her stamina. She would have worried she was being too aggressive, but she was fighting an unknown creature. Jin held him in very high regard, seeing him as the finest application of physical force. While he didn’t hold the same level of artistry or outright lethality of her sword craft, it was very clear that he would be far more destructive should she begin to falter in her speed. She had little compared to his own, and it showed. Her strikes, if they did make impact on him, struck lightly. While she once more brought her sword arm close to her chest to prepare for yet another strike, she caught the glimpse of swaying trees, almost being parted by some unknown force until finally, Tien emerged. Once she saw his figure begin to glide inches above the ground towards her engagement, she broke off completely. The girl turned on heel, and retreated just as the demon finally caught sight of Tien. When the two forces clashed, the human easily over powered the demon, causing him to spread his wingspan and lift himself from the ground. He crouched low once his feet returned to earth, observing the new arrival with more caution than he had with Jin. In fact, it was the human who initiated their own engagement by easily striding across the snow towards the winged figure. Looking over his right shoulder, Tien moved his left hand sideways and upward. His elbow was slightly bent. As his hand moved toward striking the demon, he rotated his hip and shoulder. As part of the maneuver he tucked in his chin. Tien's rising arm should covered him from a forced reaction strike as well as deliver his own blow towards his chest. Pivoting to his outside foot and stepping in toward the demon to make sure weight was being transferred into the punch. On contact, Tien's elbow was still somewhat bent. The bent elbow passed the target. This helped the punch penetrate. It also helping prevent hyper extension of his joint in using the strike. Tien added torque by rotating his striking fist. At the beginning of Tien's strike, the back of the hand faced the striking dummy. Tien just before contact, rotated his palm of his hand out to make contact. This added enough power to break the poor attempt of a stance that the demon took. From there he only became more aggressive in his attacks, managing to keep himself well within arms reach, breaking any attempt that the demon made to defend himself. He caught sight of a clawed limb working it's way up in an arc aimed for his head. Tien pivoted his entire body onto his rear leg while lowering himself down onto one knee. Both hands came up to form a full triangle at the core of the demon's abdomen. Wings expanded once more as the air surrounding the two of them ignited furiously from the heat of the oncoming attack. "Kikoho!" Twc: 25,580 |
