Cisco is to buy Ubiquisys, the Swindon based small cell specialist, for $310million. The move is said by Cisco to reinforce its capability to deliver mobile internet networks.

"Cisco is 'doubling down' on its small cell business to accelerate strong momentum and growth in the mobility market," claimed Kelly Ahuja, general manager of Cisco's Mobility Business Group. "By acquiring Ubiquisys, we are expanding on our current mobility leadership and our end to end product portfolio."

Ubiquisys has focused on small cell communications and on intelligent software for licensed 3G and LTE spectrum. It believes this, coupled with Cisco's mobility portfolio and Wi-Fi expertise, will provide a comprehensive small-cell solution for service providers that supports the transition to next-generation radio access networks.
