<p>Rapunzel had been walking for hours, and yet no matter how many hours passed, it seemed the scenery never changed.<p>
<p>Earlier on in the day, when her mother had left on a trip that promised to take a week at least, the prospect of escape had seemed far more clever than it did now. Of course, leaving the tower behind was undoubtedly simpler in theory than in practice, and it had taken Rapunzel an unimaginably long time to steel herself well enough to go.<p>
<P>What had followed was something of an emotional roller coaster ride-at first, a happiness so deeply felt that she imagined she could just run singing through the trees forever; then, misery, regret, self-loathing, guilt. Why had she done it? Why had she left her mother behind? Perhaps this was all wrong. If her mother discovered she was missing, she would be devastated-irrevocably so-and Rapunzel couldn't bear knowing that she had caused her such pain.<p>
<p>So shaken by the impact of this one sided argument was Rapunzel that she turned swiftly on her heels, determined to reach her tower as swiftly as possible.<p>
<p>Unfortunately, she had been searching for so long that it was now utterly plain she was lost-trapped in the woods somewhere, where it was as unlikely she would find her home as it was that she would come upon the floating lanterns which she had left to see in the first place.<p>
<p>Mother is going to kill me, she murmured to herself, frustrated and-though she was too stubborn to admit it-afraid.<p>
<p>Hesitantly, defensively brandishing the frying pan she had thought to take from the kitchens before leaving, she crept through the undergrowth, pushing aside branches that scratched at her bare arms.<p>
<p>And just when she was beginning to think she would never make it out of the forest, she saw it-just over the horizon, an enormous castle-stunning, ancient, but with an air of the abandoned, something chilling.<p>
<p>"Okay," she said aloud, darting a cautious glance at Pascal who nodded bracingly from her shoulder, "Okay-we can do this...right? Right-c'mon."<p>
<p>Heartened by the sight of the castle-biting her lip against the fervent hope that whoever inhabited it would help her find her way home before her mother discovered that she had disappeared-Rapunzel's pace quickened, and before long she had reached the imposing double doors.<p>
<p>Squeezing her eyes shut, nervously twirling a lock of hair around her finger, Rapunzel drew back the knocker and let it down twice.<p>

[dohtml]<div style="padding-top: 17px; width: 351px; text-align: justify;">

Yet another gloomy and boring day at his castle, surprise surprise. Even though it was fairly bright from what he could tell from the sky, there was still an ominous air around his castle as the pine forest around it only added to the spooky atmosphere. Of course, that mattered very little to The Beast as he was cooped up in his special wing within the castle. The magic rose near his balcony continued to torture him as he stared at it or even just reflected on its presence, which was almost every waking moment of his life as he was forced to look at the monstrous form he was turned into. Not one person could ever fall in love with a thing like him.
<br>
<br>
His despair seemed to know no limits as he stared almost helplessly at the flower behind it's glass case. Running his bear like paws over the case, a small sigh left his maw. Who was he kidding? He was just going to stay this way all of his life. Serves him right for trying to yell at an Enchantress and be downright rude to her. Glancing outside, he walked towards the balcony and just looked around his castle grounds. There was no signs of life around it and with the way the vines were growing up around the stone, this place probably looked abandoned to any wayward traveler.
<br>
<br>
Those bright blue eyes of his continued to scan until he thought he saw something that looked like something he had never seen before. He could have sworn it looked like a young girl approaching his castle. But what would such a girl like that be doing in a place like this? Visitors what not something he wanted right now. With a light growl and a dramatic swipe of his cape, he left his little room in a slight huff. Who dared trespass on his castle anyways? The more he thought about it, the more angry he started to become.
<br>
<br>
It wasn't long before his tiny ears heard the dull echoing sound of the door knocker on the wood of the door. Rather than have one of his servants get it, he decided to answer the door for himself. Grabbing onto the knocker with his large hand, he pulled it open with ease. At first as he opened the door he didn't see anybody from his height. He had to look down to see a very petite blond girl who apparently seemed to possesses an unusual amount of hair. A light scoff escaped him. Did this girl not know the meaning of scissors? "Who are you? What are you doing here?" He demanded right away from the girl.</div>[/dohtml]

<div style="padding: 20px;">
<div style="color: 000; text-align: justify; padding-left: 19px; width: 350px; padding-top: 21px; padding-bottom: 21px; padding-right: 21px; font-family: georgia; font-size: 9px; line-height: 9px;">
<p>Rapunzel, who was by now so tired that she had begun to wonder how in the world her legs were still supporting her, could not help but feel a strong sense of relief at having found a place to stay for the night. She did not imagine, after all, that she would be able to walk another step; if she hadn't come upon this strange, isolated little castle, who knew what might have become of her?<p>
<P>Nonetheless, a nagging feeling-one that Pascal, who himself seemed rather startled by the look of the place, did nothing to soothe-told her that there was something-well...off about it.<p>
<p>She had already knocked, however, and whoever it was that resided here had surely heard the sound by this time; there was no going back from this point, and besides-anything was better than wandering off into the forest once more.<P>
<p>So, squaring her shoulders, her grip on the frying pan's handle so tight that her knuckles had gone pale, Rapunzel steeled herself for what was to come. Sure enough, just as she had done so, the doors banged open with a crack that seemed deafening in the otherwise silent clearing; skittish already, she resisted the urge to back away a few paces and stared determinedly into the open doorway.<p>
<p>There, a sight met her that she could never in a million years have dreamed up-not even trapped in her tower with nothing to do but put her imagination to good use. A man stood in the doorway, but no ordinary man-more animal, really, swathed as he was in thick, brown fur, huge and hulking.<p>
<p>So petrified was she by the very existence of him that it was another moment entirely before she had gathered her bearings enough to realize that he was speaking to her-in a language that, though undoubtedly issuing in deep and rather frightening tones, was certainly one she could understand.<p>
<p>Rapunzel sucked in a deep breath, eyes darting anxiously to the chameleon on her shoulder for comfort. A strong instinct to run for the hills had taken over, but an unexpected voice of reason warned she would be no safer in the wilderness than she would on this man's doorstep, beast or no.<p>
<p>"I-I'm sorry." she managed, biting worriedly on her lip. "My name is Rapunzel and I...sort of...ran away. I shouldn't have, but I did, and now I'm lost and I'm-not really sure where I am." Suddenly, the truth was pouring out of her in an outburst that was difficult to put a stop to; she was so lost and cold and lonely, but worse than all of that-her mother. She had let her down, and now she was paying for it in the worst way imaginable. "Please-if I could stay just for the night. I promise I won't bother you."<p>

As he stared at the girl before him, he couldn't help but notice the little green bug that was sitting on her shoulder. How disgusting and to be running around in a place like this with no shoes on? This girl must have been from one of the poor little villages around here and got herself lost enough to find his castle. The next big question was, what to do with her? Well the answer was pretty obvious: shoo her away. He did not take kindly to trespassers and she certainly was one, regardless of her story she probably could conjure up to get him to let her stay. A heavy breath came from him, causing mist to come out of his nostrils. Clearly she was frightened by his visage as was expected. His tail flicked behind him in impatience.
<br>
<br>
Of course, as he figured she started to blurt out exactly what happened to her. "You certainly did get yourself lost, girl to wind up here." That was like the understatement of the world. At her question of wanting to stay here, he narrowed his eyes suspiciously. She probably had heard the story about his rose or something and wanted to do damage to it. Still, despite his obvious reservations about allowing her entrance into his castle, she seemed so scared and the way her eyes looked reminded him a little bit of Belle. With another snort at her, he very reluctantly opened the door more for her and stepped aside. "Just for the night and then be gone from here." he boomed a little.
<br>
<br>
It had to be Belle that was making him be this nice to a stranger, even though his anger still could use a little bit of work. "Follow me and I will show you to your room." Going down the large main hall, he picked up a candelabra in his hand to lead the way. Lumiere was probably elsewhere in the castle which was why it was a little quiet in the entrance way. Of course, it was always quiet to him since he very rarely accepted visitors off the street to come in. As he walked towards the stairs at the end of the hall, he took extra care so that his claws wouldn't tear up the red carpet.
<br>
<br>
<br>
Leading her up the stairs, he took an immediate right and continued down that hallway. Opening the second door on his left, he moved aside to let her in. "Should you need anything during the night, my servants will attend you."

<p>Though Rapunzel had decided that there was a kindness in the Beast's eyes that she could not ignore, Pascal did not seem half so inclined to take to him. Perhaps the chameleon had sensed that he was even less welcome than his human friend-else he simply didn't like the look of this strange, furry creature; whatever the case, Pascal tensed on her shoulder. Eyes narrowed with distrust, he swat Rapunzel in the neck with his little tail, but she merely gave him a stern look, at which he fell grudgingly silent.<P>
<p>At his grim remark, she answered ruefully, "I-I guess I did. I just wish I knew how to get back."<p>
<p>Rapunzel's heart leaped in her chest at his next words, and she could not help the smile that graced her face. "Really?" she asked, breathless, "Thank you-I promise I'll leave as soon as it's light! Although...if you didn't mind, I probably could use some directions-"<p>
<p>No sooner had the words left her mouth when she paused on the threshold of the castle, lips parting in surprise. Of course, it was a castle-huge, looming, striking-but she had never thought past the exterior before. Now, she was stunned into silence by the sheer beauty of the entrance hall alone. The tower was lovely in its familiar way-yet it was decidedly dwarfed by this place, which seemed to Rapunzel the stuff of fairy tales.<P>
<p>"It's so-beautiful."<p>
<p>Hesitantly, glancing one last time over her shoulder at the forest beyond and thinking with increasing guilt of what her mother would say, she followed at his feet-or, to be more precise, paws.<p>
<p>The proffered room was just as lovely-and just as vaguely foreboding, as though no one had stepped foot in it for several years. It was so different from her own room, which was filled to the brim with bits and pieces of her everyday life; a shelf overflowing with books; a wall painted from top to bottom; a stash of games and puzzles and mountains of things to occupy her time.<p>
<p>After a moment's pause, she moved cautiously inside, almost as though taking too many steps at once might prove dangerous. Then, with a deep breath, she collapsed on the bed; unfamiliar or not, it was heaven to rest her tired feet. Much as she disliked the thought, perhaps it was time to look into finding some shoes...<p>
<p>Once she had finished lifting all of her golden hair and twining it in coils upon the bed, she glanced warmly up at the Beast. "Thank you."

Although he was allowing her to stay in his castle, he wasn't sure why or what possessed him to do so. Outsiders were forbidden as far as he was concerned. Besides, most people wouldn't want to be near him as he seemed to notice in the eyes of her little green companion that rested on her shoulder. What was that thing anyways? It definitely wasn't something he had ever seen around before. Maybe eventually, he'll ask her. Not that he cared of course though. As far as he was concerned he just wanted to have her in and out. Guests just made him uncomfortable from what he seemed to discover about himself. But she seemed to perk up at his permission to get her to stay here. "I could try to direct you if I can but I can't promise you will get to where you need to go." From what he was guesssing, she wasn't from around here, especially if she found herself around these parts.
<br>
<br>
With a light flick of his tail and a brush of his cape, he went down the main hall. Her compliments of the place did little to make him feel better. Beautiful indeed...What was so beautiful about it? There were very few pieces of decorative art around as far as he thought. What could possibly be so beautiful about what he thought as an empty shell? To him, this castle only solidified his reminder of his empty self. Once at her room, he rubbed his nose as the dust started to get unsettled again. Since he had no use of this bedroom, he very rarely opened unneeded doors. But she seemed to be hesitant to go in right away. Was something wrong with the room? Sure it hadn't been used in years but it was still a very functional room.
<br>
<br>
His flicker of uncertainty about her opinion of the room soon shattered as she dropped her whole form on the bed. At least she seemed to lick it well enough to her liking. As she moved to the bed, he couldn't help but move his paws aside to make sure his claws wouldn't step on her hair. Where in the world and why did she have so much hair? His blue eyes couldn't help but follow it as is rested on the floor up to her head. That stuff must be incredibly heavy for her little neck to carry. He cleared his throat and nodded, "You're welcome. Enjoy the rest Rapunzel." Rapunzel...that was such an odd name to his furry ears.
<br>
<br>
Turning on his heel, he huffed and stomped down the hall back to his own little section of the castle. His mouth was open just a little bit with his breathing as he looked out the window. The sky was getting darker with the night and his fur stuck up just a little bit. That told him that winter might be slowly making its way here again.</div>[/dohtml]

<p>Rapunzel nodded her thanks to the Beast at his reply, crossing her fingers behind her back in the fervent hope that he was well enough acquainted with the forest to help her find her way home. It didn't seem at all as though he was pleased to have her in the castle, even overnight-and, after all, she had agreed to leave as soon as the morning arrived. Rapunzel never broke a promise-and yet she doubted she would have anyplace else to go if it the Beast was unfamiliar with her tower; being that Mother Gothel had gone to such trouble to keep it hidden away, she assumed he wouldn't know of it, which meant that come sunup, she was on her own once more.<p>
<p>Stubbornly, she pushed the thought from her mind. She was weary to her very core, and had room in her head for little more than the prospect of a good night's sleep. Already, Pascal-who had, moments earlier, crawled atop the highest pillow to keep watch over her-had fallen fast asleep, curled up in a little green ball.<p>
<P>When he wished her a peaceful sleep, Rapunzel couldn't bite back her smile-even if it was followed by a yawn that she couldn't quite stifle. For all that he seemed intimidating, there was a kindness to his voice that made her want to trust him, and she felt a rush of affection toward him for having let her stay at all; clearly, the castle was meant to be a private place, and it had cost him some kind of effort to lend her the room.<p>
<p>"Thanks-I...what should I call you?" Rapunzel's brow furrowed as she tried to call whether or not he had mentioned a name-but no, she felt sure he hadn't.<p>
<p>By the time her curiosity had been properly piqued, though, he was already gone. Shrugging, she nestled under the covers; seconds after her head had hit the pillow, she fell fast asleep.<P>
<p>When she woke the next morning, there was a chill to the air that made her wish she had thought to bring a cloak. After rubbing her arms for warmth, she offered her cupped palms to Pascal, who clambered into them, and allowed himself to be transferred to her shoulder. She glanced once more at the beautiful chamber, the smallest of frowns touching her lips, before turning to go. No, she hadn't any idea in the world how to get home-but she had promised not to be a bother, and she wasn't about to make a liar of herself.<p>
<p>The castle was silent as the grave, and Rapunzel found that she was glad of her bare feet, even if they were freezing, because it meant that she hardly made a sound as she padded down the corridor. At the grand staircase, she glanced down, as though suspecting the Beast to be waiting at the bottom, but there was no one there. "Hello?" she tried uncertainly. "Is-uh-anybody there?"<p>
