Chapter 15 The Animal She Has Become Jane felt this was very Star Wars-ish. "No, you are not. My father is in England." "Your mother is married to the man you have believed to be your father." "I don't believe this!" Jane snapped. Fiona just continued to lay there. She was fully awake but just wasn't showing it. She was waiting for the right moment, the one moment she could strike. She would never turn down a good fight, even if it meant saving her worst enemy. Slade ran to Jane and grabbed her up. He threw her against the wall. "I do not lie, Jane." She slumped to the ground but quickly stood again. "Shut up! You're a villain. They all lie!" She looked down and saw her sunglasses had fallen off. Those were the only things that kept her identity secret. They were like her mask. She picked them back up and saw that they were broken. "I am not the typical villain," Slade said. Jane threw the glasses back on the ground. "How long have you been watching me?" "When you met Fiona. I have been watching her through her entire life," Slade replied. Jane sent a fire bolt to Slade, but he dodged it. "You will have to try better than that." "Glad to see you have finally found another person to pick on," Fiona said. She was stood up behind Slade, arm raised ready to strike. "It gets tiresome fairly quickly, Jane," Fiona warned. Her face wasn't its usual happy one or it's usual frowning one. Her face showed no emotion what so ever. Jane smiled. "Should've known it. Should've known you were working with someone else. How will Angelica feel now that you betrayed her? She HATES Slade. Guess you loose your team and your girlfriend for some old crazy geezer." "Work with him? Please. I've spent most of my life trying to get rid of him. Trying to kill him or trying to avoid him. Why else do you think I move around so often have spent so little time trying to find someone who would help me? Because I knew no-one could get rid of him. But Angelica and everyone else is different. They'll get rid of him, I just know it. Why else do I feel so safe around them?" Fiona's hand was still raised. She would strike the moment anyone would move. She didn't care who it was. "Really? Did I mention Angelica works for him? She's forced to. She won't get rid of him! She's too scared. She cares nothing about you, only the sex." "That's not true," said a woman with a Russian accent from the rooftops. Jane looked up to see Angelica, whose arms were crossed. "I DO love Fiona. If you know what's good for you, you'll leave her alone." Her voice was quite calm. The wounds from Jane were still bleeding. She looked down to Slade. "And YOU!" Her voice was no longer calm. "You'll heed my warning too." "If you want Fiona to live you'll do exactly as I ask," Slade said. "Don't listen to him. He couldn't kill me. He's tried many, many times and not once has he succeeded!" Fiona called up to Angelica. "And you were saying Jane?" she asked, raising a eyebrow at Jane. Jane smirked, then was about to say something when Slade spoke. "You stupid girl! I had no intention to kill you, only to take you as my apprentice." "I attacked you because you attacked me first, and I wouldn't work for you even if it could get me anything and everything I wanted!" Fiona retorted angrily. "Did I say you had a choice?" Slade said menacingly. Angelica dropped from the roof. "Over my cold, dead body." "Angelica, please be careful," Fiona said. "Don't get hurt because of me. You know I'd never let him force me to do anything." "I know you wouldn't allow him to do anything, but he can very well harm you." "I'd hurt him back with twenty-times the pain I was in," Fiona replied, flashing a smile. Angelica smiled. Jane walked to Slade. "Now you die!" Fiona smiled. "No, now we ignore him. We fight. Whoever wins gets him." She didn't want to lose out on the fight she so desperately wanted to fight. Slade laughed calmly. "I don't think so." "Well you haven't done anything yet. I have unfinished business that doesn't involve your participation, and I'm getting restless." "We will not meet just yet. Not today," he said. Jane was pissed. "Let's get this over with." She threw a fire-bolt at him and he hit the wall. His arm had severed. Jane gasped. She done that? But she saw sparks coming from it. She walked to it, looked at it, and saw it was a robotic arm. She looked up at Slade and saw his mask fall off, revealing he was a robot. Jane frowned. Fiona rolled her eyes. "I told you to just get on with it," she said. "But I haven't got time for this. I'm going now. Good bye." She lifted herself up with a cloud. "Are you coming?" she asked Angelica. "In a minute. Go on without me. I'll catch up." "No, leave her. I want to deal with her. Later, though." "And your reason is...? She'll only get away!" "Stop talking about me like I'm not here," said Jane. "And you're not getting away that easy!" "Just get on with it then," Fiona sighed with boredom. Jane rolled her eyes. "What? You are bored? I had to hear you, this one and the psycho who thinks he's my father babbling together for minutes on end!" She threw a line of fire at Fiona. Fiona dodged out of the way. "Careful, you could kill someone!" she screamed and flew off on a cloud. 'If she doesn't follow I'm going home', she though to herself. Jane flew after Fiona, leaving Angelica alone in the street. "Why can't you just come back later?" Fiona asked, still flying to get away. "Why can't you just stop killing everyone?" "You're really irksome. You know that, don't you?" Fiona said, growling with frustration. "I could say the same for you. But I'm doing it for your own good." "My own good. You sound like my mother," she said quietly. "We're all doing it for your own good." "It's never gonna happen. You're not my mother. Therefore, it can't be for my own good but for your own gain, to make your name known to more people. And I don't want that." "I'm not doing it to make myself sound good! I'm a TRUE hero, the ones who do it to help. Not to get appearances or whatever! That's your problem. You think because your mother is gone that it's the whole world's fault. You think because you are wanted in every country that it's the whole world's fault. It's no one's fault but your own!" Fiona smiled. "Until I find my mothers killer, everyone is a suspect." "What? The two year old down the street is a suspect? The college student working her way to a better life is a suspect? A superhero that wants to help you--but you shrug her off--is a suspect? You're sick," Jane snarled, disgusted. "I'm not taking my chances that's all. I don't know who did that horrible deed that night but I won't let it happen again." "And who is it going to happen to?" Jane asked, shaking her head. "Anyone, anytime, anyplace. But I don't care. I'm saving someone like me a whole eternity of pain," Fiona replied. "Or are you simply saving yourself? It won't be the first time you've been selfish." "There is my mother's killer out there somewhere and as long as I'm alive I'll search and destroy until I am sure they've gotten what they deserved. That will save many people from the same fate as me and probably stop many more 'villains', as you put it, coming into the world." Jane starred at Fiona. "And you would've got by with it, if you had've been a hero," she said quietly, weariness and sadness on her face. "Maybe I've tried. Maybe I wanted to be one. Maybe I would be one if my mother was alive or I still lived with my father. But there is too much to be undone. Too much water has gone under the bridge so it can never be retrieved. And you just don't get it and get off my back." Fiona replied. It was, to her knowledge, the truth. Jane had tears forming in her eyes. They rolled down her face. "Yes, I do damn well get it. You're just like the others I wanted to help." She wiped the tears off her face. "I tried. You always complain about no one caring about you, about no one helping you. I just did. I just tried and you pushed me away, just like all the others." "You want to help me, sure. But you think you know what's best for me and you don't so you can't help me. That's what everyone else does. Helps me in the way they think best. No-one asks me how I want to be helped. No-one understands." Fiona said. She couldn't believe the effect she was having. "BECAUSE YOU NEVER GIVE THEM TIME TO ASK! They say they want to help, then you kill them!" Jane screamed. "They always start with 'you're better than this' or something that means 'do you know what I think you should do' or 'what's best for you is....'" "Because you are better. That's a compliment, Fiona. Not an offense as your psychotic brain believes." "How would they know anything about me, though? How do I know anything about them, about you? For all I know it could be someway of getting me locked away. 'Be nice to her and make friends with her. We live and become rich for the capture of someone so dangerous'." "Do you seriously think I get money for putting a criminal in jail? There is nothing glamorous about the lifestyle of a superhero. Hell, I don't even get credit for the captures. At the moment, they seem to think I'm working with you. I just want to help, do good. I live for those two things. They are all I have." "Alright, I'll let you have two weeks to prove you can help me and won't betray my trust. In the mean time, good bye," Fiona said. She shot a large lightening bolt at Jane, who easily missed. Fiona flew off at high speed, laughing. The End |
