The plane ride wasn't long. They landed smoothly on the runway. Then they were told they could get out.

Angelica was exhausted by now, but she refused to let her guard down to sleep. She didn't know anyone on that plane and it was uncomfortably lonely. Her legs were weak.

Angelica and Mercer strode down the ramp. Mercer led her to the parking lot. It was the early hours of the morning, still dark. Angelica felt so weak that it was difficult to concentrate on walking.

Angelica could see by the overhead lights that there was another black limousine up ahead. Mercer walked alongside her. She glanced at Angelica.

"You don't talk much," the woman commented.

Angelica glared at her. She still didn't like the way Mercer looked at her, as if she was something to be studied, some fascinating creature in a zoo cage.

A man stepped out of the drivers' seat of the limo and opened one of the backdoors.

Mercer motioned for Angelica to get in. She looked at her again, her expression stony. She was not about to turn her back to this woman.

Finally, Mercer got in, only after Angelica noticed that for a second there she seemed peeved. Angelica slid in after her into the soft gray interior.

This limousine was exactly like the last one, and Angelica was pleased to find out it was as comfortable as that one too. She sat back, involuntarily sighing.

The car began to move and it drove out of the parking lot and down city streets. Angelica looked out the window, out to businesses and shops. She had been in Metropolis before, but not this part of town. She did not recognize it.

Angelica could feel Mercer's staring at her. She returned the gaze and didn't look away. They had a stare-off for a second, both women waiting for the other to break-down and look away, but neither of them did. Mercer frowned, which made Angelica feel triumphant that she was upsetting her. Finally, Mercer was showing an emotion that wasn't smug or confident.

"I understand you want to go back home, Ms. Volkova," Mercer said, her face smoothing and the frown disappearing. "But, as you know well, you currently have no where else to go."

Angelica didn't say anything. She knew she had lost the V-Squad for now, possibly forever. No, she couldn't think that way. She was not a loser. She did not lose, she won and conquered, always victorious. It didn't matter that her love betrayed her, that her teammates abandoned her. She still had her cunning self. Unfortunately, she would have a baby to raise alone.

These thoughts depressed her deeply. She pushed them out of her mind and focused on the moment at hand.

"We will help you," Mercer went on, looking her directly in the eye. No one ever did that. "Like I mentioned before, we have a preposition for you, one that extends beyond bailing you out of jail. But it's not my place to tell you this. You will know everything very soon."

Angelica turned away to look out the window. As they drove on, the sun rose, casting peach and pink light across the clear sky.

"And what will your boss do when I choose to not accept his 'proposition'?" Angelica inquired, turning again to look at Mercer, almost glaring at her.

Mercer simply smiled. "Ms. Volkova, you have already accepted."

Fiona sat alone and scared in the meeting room of the base. she never noticed how big it was before. She normally had a good row with angelica, or squashed ideas from Lauren about hiring rabbits for the whole team and adding suggestions of hamsters instead. This room was always busy, always someone there. She didn't like it like this. Not one little bit. She wanted the busyness of it all to return. And she wanted it now.

They eventually entered the wealthy part of town where there were expensive apartments and large mansions.

They stopped outside of one particular home, a very large, very expensive one. Angelica guessed this was where the 'boss' lived.

She was eager to find out who he was. She hated being in the dark about anything, especially information like this. She needed to know who wanted to hire her out and why he had the nerve to believe she would work for anyone.

All she knew was that he was a man, and he was rich.

The driver got out and held open the door for she and Mercer. They slid out and stood there. Angelica looked up at the huge house, then stepped forward, walking to the door of her own accord. She stood there, waiting for Mercer to open it. They went in.

Angelica was immediately surprised to see a security guard standing there. He didn't freak out at the sight of her, though, so she figured even the hired help of the 'boss' were expecting her.

Fiona sat there with her head down on the table, hiding her face. She'd been lonely before, so why was this hurting so much? She figured it was a case of not missing what you didn't know. Now she did know what she was missing and it hurt more than she could ever have imagine.

Mercer sent a servant upstairs to tell the boss that his guest had arrived. Two minutes later, the servant came striding back in.

"He will see you now."

Mercer and Angelica went up the enormous staircase that went both ways, then turned right. Down a long hall were many doors, she could see. She didn't know where she was going, but the other woman lead the way, obviously familiar with the place.

They stopped at a set of two wooden double-doors. Mercer knocked. From inside, a man said, "Come in."

Mercer opened the door.

This was a study, Angelica could see. There was a fireplace with two sofas and a glass coffee table. to the left was a table with glasses of alcoholic drinks, the kind only rich people could afford.

Straight ahead was a window looking out over the city. At the top was some sort of stained-glass design. Below the window was a clear glass desk with a laptop and papers spread across it. Behind it was a chair. Sitting in it was a man.

The man was bald.

He spun the chair around casually to face Angelica and Mercer.

"Welcome, Ms. Volkova. It's great to finally meet you," said Lex Luthor.

Fiona finally managed to pull herself together and stand up, she was sure there was something she could do to keep her mind off of things. Something, anything. She hoped someone would come to her with a task.

Angelica looked at Mercer with shock. "This is, a joke, yes?"

Mercer merely smile, which on her always seemed to look like a smirk.

"No, not a joke at all, Miss Volkova," Luthor said. She turned again to face him. "I'm a very serious man and I've brought you here for a reason."

He glanced meaningfully at Mercer, who still stood at the doorway. Then she nodded and left the room, closing the double doors. Angelica was alone with him.

Angelica knew Luthor's reputation. Everyone did. Her family had done business with his family for years, and if she strained her memory she could probably remember him as a child. Volkov Industries and LuthorCorp did the same kind of work. They dealt with biotechnology and funded science labs across the world.

The V-Squad and LuthorCorp had also worked together in recent years. Working with his company had helped Angelica gain power for her own empire.

Angelica folded her arms across her chest, glaring at him.

"I'm sure you want me to get to the point," he continued. "I admire that about you."

Angelica resisted the urge to tap her foot impatiently.

"I have an opportunity for you to take back your team as well as restore fear in your enemies. I only require simple tasks to be accomplished."

"Tasks?"

"Yes. See, you're not the only one with enemies, people who are jealous of your success and only want to see you crash and burn. Lots of people say false things about LuthorCorp, as well as myself. It seems I just can't get past the sins of my father."

"So you would like me to kill them?" Angelica asked, incredulous. "When someone is speaking publicly against you, it's not rocket science to figure out that suspicion will be cast upon you when he turns up dead."

"Which is precisely why I'm not asking you to kill them, I simply need you to intimidate them, get them to think twice about spreading their lies and rumors."

When he spoke, it was as if he thought she were the stupidest human being on the planet. His words were smooth as butter and incredibly fake-nice, as if he was speaking to a child and not Angelica Pavelovna Volkova.

"Lies and rumors? You're not fooling me, Luthor. I know all about your schemes, your lies, your studies on meteor-infected people."

"Meteor-infected?" he asked, raising an eyebrow as if confused. "Ms. Volkova, surely you haven't been speaking to Chloe Sullivan. Since highschool she has been convinced that people get special powers from flying rocks. Some people never grow up." He smiled.

Angelica found herself getting more ticked-off by the minute. How stupid did he think she was? She was the most influential mastermind in the world. He was second to her.

"I don't know who the hell Chloe Sullivan is, and I don't care to. I have my own evidence against you."

"Really? I would like to see this evidence."

Angelica blinked. Exactly. It was all at the base, which she currently did not have access to and was miles away from.

He smirked, knowing this conclusion.

Manipulative bastard.

"Fine, so you want me to intimidate the people whose lives have been destroyed by you--" he shook his head, and laughed a bit as if this were ridiculous, "--so you can slip off the media and government radar. I get it. And in return I get to go home and get everything back?" Angelica asked.

"Something like that, yes."

"Just so you know, I don't need your help. The place is still mine, the team is still mine."

"Not exactly. My sources tell me the one known as Fiona is in charge."

"She always is whenever no one else can step in!"

He ignored that as if she had said nothing. "And of course there's the issue with every one of your team-members abandoning you. It's the people who give you everything. When they no longer have respect, you have lost their loyalty and your power."

Angelica imagined walking back into her home and acting like none of it would happen. Impossible. There was Fiona, whom she both wanted to see again and didn't. No one way would she ever be with her again after what she did. Then of course there was the team and servants who whose loyalty now lay with Fiona.

Luthor was using this against her to get her onto his side, but it was true as far as she could see.

She could still go home right now. But what about the people there, what if they chose to attack when they saw her? She was in no condition to fight. She was seven months pregnant!

"In case you haven't noticed, I'm pregnant," she reminded, unable to think of any other excuse. "I'm not intimidating anyone in this condition. At the most, they will laugh."

He shrugged and smiled that slimy liar's smile. "I can wait two months."

Fiona was bombarded with requests the moment she walked out of the door. Most of them were simple and easily solved. She sighed, it was hard, but at least she could keep busy.

Angelica was shown to a room she was told she would be staying in. She was told there were clothes in the closet and everything else she would need was in bathroom that adjoined to the room.

There was a desk in the room, and really large comfy bed. There was also a bookshelf full of books and a lounging chair by that. It was a big room and nice.

The bathroom was also large with a big round tub and a shower stall opposite from that. The counter had two sinks. There was a cabinet off from that with everything a woman could need.

She went to the window and pulled back the drapes. Now that it was daylight, she could see the entire city of Metropolis from up there. It was sunny and beautiful, far more peaceful than smoggy Gotham.

Angelica went to her bed and sobbed.

Fiona had not slept much the last three days. It had always been the same for her, if she was worried and lonely, sleep never came. She'd spent many a night wide awake in the past and so it was nothing new to her.

She spent the time she should be sleeping looking through a filing cabinet of contacts she'd find, trying to find possible contacts Angelica may know who would bail her out of jail.

She knew it would be a lot easier just to look on the database on the computer, but that involved some knowledge of how to use the thing, and Fiona didn't even know how to turn it on never mind use it.

That night, the other V-Squad members were able to leave their bases. The first one to arrive the next day--from Rio de Janeiro--was Sam. He had his luggage taken to his room and he went to find Fiona immediately.

Fiona was sat in the corner of the meeting room rocking....Or at least that's what she felt like doing. She felt she was only hours away from being committed into some kind of asylum. But she couldn't give up now she was getting somewhere.

In reality she'd been sorting through the possibilities of who'd bailed Angelica. From all of Angelica's contacts, she'd managed to narrow it down to about 45 that could have potentially fit the rough description she was given. Now all she had to do was double check them, find the ones she'd thought had no interest from the ones she thought may.

Sam saw her there and ran up to her, assuming the worst. "What happened, Fiona?"

Fiona jumped a mile not even realising anyone was there.
"Sam, your back. And what do you mean what happened?" Fiona asked holding her chest while her heart decided to calm down from the shock.

"Excuse me for saying so, but you look terrible," Sam said, frowning. "And miserable," he added.

Fiona frowned at that. She had tried to keep somewhat presentable the whole time she was alone, apparently it hadn't worked.
"Gee thanks, that makes me feel a whole lot better." Fiona said rolling her eyes then she smiled.
"I am glad to see you though." She added.

"So some stranger came and bailed Angelica out? She wouldn't go with her unless she knew her, right?" He sat down.

"It's Angelica, who's to know what goes through her head?" Fiona asked.
