The room went quiet for a few seconds, and Sam got more serious. "We'll find her, don't you worry." He smiled a bit. |

Fiona returned the small smile. "I know, I just hope we're not too late." Fiona replied quietly. |

That night, Luthor's home was quiet and uneventful as was usual. Angelica was on her way to her room, passing through the halls. She got to a particular place in the hall with sofas. It looked like this could be a sitting room. She heard unfamiliar laughing echoing from somewhere down the hall, then saw shadows. Suddenly, from behind her, she heard a voice. "Ah, Ms. Volkova, there you are," Tess Mercer said, striding up to her. She wasn't wearing her usual pantsuit, but instead black pants and a maroon cashmere sweater. Her read curls hung on her shoulders. Suddenly, the laughter from a minute ago came nearer, along with voices. Lex turned the corner with a woman on his arm. She looked at Tess and Angelica with contempt. Angelica returned the look. Lex looked at them. "Evening, Ms. Volkova, Ms. Mercer." He walked right on by with the bimbo clinging onto his arm. Angelica glanced at Tess before beginning to make her way to her room. Then she stopped in her tracks and did a double-take. She was surprised at how devastated Tess looked. The woman's mouth was in a grimace, and her eyes were unfocused, somewhere distant. Before Angelica could turn around and begin walking to her room again, Tess spoke. "You know, I used to lead a somewhat normal life. I was a marine biologist for LuthorCorp, a girl fresh out of college wanting an opportunity in life," Tess said quietly, not looking at Angelica. Her eyes remained unfocused, as if she were seeing events that took place hundreds of miles away, years ago. Angelica was about to remark something along the lines of, "This is fascinating. And I must warn you that I may unexpectedly lie." But she didn't get the chance to, because Tess continued. "While at sea one day, my boat was taken over by pirates. I was captured and I was able to make it home. Mr. Luthor took interest in my career and gave me this job. But I'm beginning to think it was my worst mistake." Tess turned and sat on one of the fancy uncomfortable sofas. Angelica knew she should walk away. She wasn't interested in someone's problems. "You don't realize what a task it is to keep a straight emotionless face when you're facing someone who your boss may have put to death in less than a day, or when you're sent to deliver a message to an ally and to make sure that ally still feels alliance to said boss. If He or She doesn't, they may be terminated. It's as if they aren't human beings." Tess leaned forward and laid her head in her hands. "You're right, I can't imagine how that must be," Angelica said. "I stopped caring long ago when everyone else did. It's life. I got over it." Tess glanced at her from between her fingers. "Well, then perhaps you're lucky." She sighed. "I'm thirty-two years old and a twenty-something has beat me to success." She shook her head, ashamed. "From what I understand, you're fairly new to working for Mr. Luthor, therefore the entire business is new to you," Angelica said. "You will get used to it. Once you do, you will become bored and you will be continuously searching for an interesting feud with another businessman. Or whatever it is that you do." Tess looked at Angelica. "When did you enter the criminal business?" "I was young. Practically a child." "What happened to make you change? Was it your parents deaths?" Tess asked. "I didn't say I would give you my life story," Angelica snapped. "You're right, I'm sorry." A moment of silence. Angelica now realized she had stepped much closer towards Tess than she had realized. And she was startled that she couldn't bring herself to move away. Tess looked up to her. "I don't want to be here any more than you do." "I find that hard to believe. You aren't being taken from your only family," Angelica snapped. "I have no family either way, so it doesn't make a difference." Angelica folded her arms. Tess said, "You and I have a lot in common. We both want the same thing, to have power and to influence the world. You have that, you understand the need for it." She reached out and took Angelica's hand, pausing only for a millisecond, surprised at how cold Angelica's hands were. Tess stood and looked deep into Angelica's eyes. "We don't have to be divided like we are. I'm not your enemy....I will help you get home. It's not right for you to have to stay here any longer." She stepped forward, leaned in, and kissed Angelica, taking Angelica's hands and holding them. She turned Angelica around so the woman's back faced the sofa. Angelica sat down. The two didn't separate the kiss as Tess climbed up on top of Angelica, avoiding her baby bump. Angelica's instincts screamed at her to not trust the woman. She silenced the doubt, wrapping her fingers in Tess's hair and sliding over to lay down, and the woman laid with her. |

Fiona sat alone working as usual, another long, boring day. With boredom came the emotions she seldom got a break from. Loneliness and guilt. She'd started getting used to them. She had to. But the more she got used to them the more she forgot to hope. At this moment she wondered if Angelica felt like this. And if she too, was getting used to where ever she was. Fiona needed a break, she'd been working almost none stop all day. And for the first time in what seemed like forever she felt hungry. She decided to go find something to eat. Food and sleep were always the last things on her mind at times like these. |

Sunlight streamed through the window. Angelica blinked and shaded her eyes with her arm. The room was quiet, still. This was to be expected. As she lay there, everything came back to her. Tess talking to her about her feelings on Luthor, their little make-out session, Angelica pulling away and going back to her room. Nothing else happened. She realized she didn't want anything to happen. Tess was okay, but she wasn't Fiona. Angelica felt another pang as she thought of her love back home, who had probably already forgotten about her. |

Fiona sighed looking at the day light. She'd spent the night alone outside looking at the city. It was fairly chilly, but she didn't care it helped her feel better. |

Angelica got up, got dressed, brushed her hair and went down to breakfast. For the first day since she'd been there, there was no one at breakfast, nor was there any food on the table. Something was different about today. She had a feeling something would happen, something big. But what? Nothing was supposed to really change til she had the baby. She glanced out the dining room window. There were dark clouds outside, blocking sunlight. She frowned, the dark feeling staying. She turned and walked upstairs and down the hall, hoping to pass by someone along the way. Nothing. |

Fiona went back inside. The weather had changed fairly quickly, she wondered if she was involuntarily changing the weather for her mood. She walked inside trying to work out what happened. |

Angelica stood before Luthor's door. Before she had time to go in-- "Ms. Volkova, there you are!" Tess exclaimed. She walked up with her hair up and wearing a pantsuit as usual. She didn't seem to act any different than she did before last night. It was like nothing had ever happened. "Perfect timing, I see. Mr. Luthor wants a word with you." Angelica nodded slowly. It was then that she realized she had come to his office with a purpose. She needed to speak to him too. Tess opened the oak double-doors. Angelica was surprised to see Luthor wasn't alone in there. Several other men were there, all looking official. Angelica recognized almost all of them. Some of them she had done business with before. Others were politicians, such as the mayor of Metropolis. They all turned to face her with a stony gaze. Luthor stepped forward. "Ah, Ms. Volkova, I'm glad to see you're up early. We have business to attend to." "I don't understand," Angelica said, freezing in place at the door. "We spoke of this before, you have a job to do." He motioned for the desk where an armchair was before it and a laptop computer with built-in webcam sat there. She didn't move, although they all waited for her to walk to the computer. "I already told you, I refuse to do this." She looked at him square in the eyes. "You commit crimes under the pretense of helping people. I have known about your lies and schemes for years, don't try to deny it." "And what do you think you will do?" Luthor asked. He was getting visibly angry now. "Go back to where you are currently unwelcome? You have to be realistic, Volkova." She noticed he dropped the polite title. "You Luthors--" she began. "So now I have to pay for the sins of my father?" he interrupted. "Sins of your father? You're just LIKE him. Blaming this all on him... it's him paying for the sins of his sons. Of course, he's as corrupt as you. You had to learn your ways somewhere, right? The Luthors are all alike." "The Luthors strive to make a difference in this world where others pretend bad things don't happen. If I have to sacrifice one life to save ten, then so be it." He looked her directly in the eyes. He had no shame. "You have some nerve claiming I'm the badguy here, when you're the most powerful criminal in Gotham." "I don't claim to be holy, nor do I claim my goal is to help people. That's all yours," she said, folding her arms across her chest. "I'm not doing this for you. I'm going home, to MY home, where I belong, whether I am welcome or not. I'm certainly unwelcome here, I know that. I don't care." She shrugged. Luthor's eyes narrowed slightly. "You have made your decision." "I have." "Fine. It's your choice." Angelica blinked and looked around. She waited for something to happen, for someone to tackle her to the ground. No one moved. She turned and walked away. |

Fiona was very distracted this morning. She had a feeling something was happening or going to. She could feel it almost in her bones. She sat working glancing up every so often biting the corner of her lip nervously. |

She needed a phone. If only her communicator hadn't been confiscated when she was arrested. She wanted to hear the sound of Fiona's voice. Now. She sat at the desk in her room, thinking. She had to find some way to get back to Gotham. She needed access to her bank accounts. She could order a car and drive back. What would happen after that? She found she didn't care. Suddenly her door burst open. Men in black police clothing piled in pointing guns at her. They shouted something, and slammed her against the wall. They pulled her arms behind her back painfully and fastened cuffs around her wrists. She noticed that no one read her her rights, just as they hadn't when she was arrested before. They marched her downstairs, searched her for any items, then shoved her into a police car. She could feel the baby kicking irritably as adrenaline pumped through her own veins. |

No matter what Fiona just couldn't concentrate. She decided a bath might ease her mind. Something to make the day go faster, there was no point dwelling on a hunch. She just had to keep going. |

Sam was in the computer room, taking a break. He had been working hard for days to find Angelica and nothing had worked. He hadn't gotten much rest. He was exhausted. He sat there. Many different news TV channels were on the big screen on mute. He wasn't paying attention to them. They all showed the same thing--the daily "news", all propaganda and lies. But it was his last resort. If there had been a sign of Angelica somewhere, hopefully it would be in the mainstream media. He was dozing off, gazing at the screen without paying attention. He closed his eyes and his head dropped the side as he fell asleep. His eyes snapped open and he yawned, and looked back up to the screen. That's when he saw it. Every single station was showing the same thing as usual, but this time it was important. Angelica's was being escorted into the police station, surrounded by reporters and photographers. Sam jumped up and called Fiona over his communicator, hoping she had it with her. |

Fiona laid now in the bath, her communicator was laid on the floor beside her. She gave a small smiled and reached over the side of the bath to get it. She opened it and set it so she could hear it without it near her ear. She was so glad it was the same button to answer has to put loud speaker on. "Hello." Fiona said placing the communicator on the side of the bath. |

Fiona processed this for a second. He spoke pretty. Once it sank in her eyes went wide. "I'll be right there." She replied closing the communicator and practically jumping out of the bath. In nothing but a towel around her body and hair she ran toward where Sam was. |

He selected CNN and turned up the volume. He heard Fiona approaching but didn't turn to look. "There's talk that they won't even give her a trial," he commented. |

"Currently she's at the police station, but they say they'll take her somewhere out in the countryside so she can't get out." She turned to face her, then took in a sharp surprised breath upon seeing her. He looked away quickly. |

Fiona nodded. "Get everyone set on finding out where she is. The moment that information is ours we're leaving." Fiona said. |
