"Malfoy is one of the most cowardly...and Karkaroff," she scoffed.

Angelica knew Fiona was up to something. She watched her carefully. She didn't suppose that Fiona would tell her if she had said nothing before. She shrugged.

"They are all cowards, he used fear to gain loyalty and fear to gain enemies, loyailty comes from trust." Fiona said. The quill which had been writting on it's own had stopped indecating it had finished. Fiona used her wand to move the parchment to a filing cabinet in the corner.
"Trust takes time, but once gain is a valuble assest. No matter how dark or light you may be. That is where he went wrong in the first instance, and where, if he does return, shall fail again." Fiona added.

"And trust is easily shattered beyond repair in an instant." Her legs were crossed as she still sat on the edge of the desk. "I suppose if he does return, he will only accept them into his ranks once again because he is entirely dependent on them and only them, no matter his power. They are all the dark wizard has--traitors and cowards." She could not conceal the smirk on her face. "And let us not forget that he was defeated by a two year old. Oh, Tom, what happened to being the most powerful wizard of all time?" She laughed.

No one referred to Voldemort as Tom. Few people knew that was his name.

Fiona smiled.
"Children are mysterious things and he was wrong to underestimate them." Fiona gave a small chuckle.
"If he comes back he won't last long, too many children in the world."

Angelica snorted. "I suppose this time they'll gum him to death."

Fiona couldn't help but laugh at that.
"He should get some dummies and teething rings for protection." Fiona added.

Angelica grinned. "The Dark Lord claim whatever title he wishes--the fact remains that I was not killed by a half-blood infant." She walked over to her. "Do you have plans tonight?"

"Currently no. But I have a feeling it won't remain that way." Fiona replied.

Fiona smiled. There wasn't much point asking where they would be going. But she found it made it more fun.
"See you at 5." Fiona agreed.
"Now get some work done" Fiona said teasing.

The Hogwarts Express arrived at six that evening as usual. And, as usual, the returning students were carried in the "horseless" carriages up to the castle, while new students were taken across the lake on boats guided by Hagrid the Gamekeeper and Care of Magical Creatures teacher.

Natasha did not take this subject but Alanis did.

Natasha rode with Shanna and Sean. Alanis found a seat in another carriage, separating from her temporarily traveling partners. Now that they were home, everyone would go to their rightful places.

Before stepping out of the carriage, Natasha held her wand pointing upward and muttered an incantation that caused an invisible umbrella-like barrier to erupt from the end of the wand, shielding her from the pouring rain. Thunder roared as she and Sean ran inside, she holding the "umbrella" over their heads. She let her wand down once they were in the entrance hall of the castle.

In there, it was warm and lit by torches. They proceeded to the Great Hall, Sean leaving her side to join his friends at the Hufflepuff table and Natasha finding a place at the Gryffindor table.

"Hey, Neville," Natasha nodded.

Neville Longbottom smiled a bit and waved shyly. "Hi, Natasha."

"Good summer?"

He shrugged and nodded.

Natasha looked around for more familiar faces. Down the table, Fred and George Weasley--who were two years ahead of her--chatted animatedly with Lee Jordan, no doubt planning something that would piss off a few teachers and prefects. Their older brother Percy was no longer here taking away points for everything--he had graduated the year previous. Harry Potter, Ron Weasley--the twins' younger brother--and Hermione Granger sat nearby, talking to one another. There was also Seamus Finnigan and Dean Thomas sitting not far down, also chatting.

The Great Hall's magical ceiling reflected the torrent of rain pouring outside and even lit when lightning cracked outside. Hundreds of candles floated above the tables, lighting the room, along with torches on the sides of the walls. Students were chatting happily in their school robes, the colors of their collars reflecting their House. Natasha was in red and gold, of course.

The teachers sat at the table at the front of the room that faced all the others. Professor Dumbledore, the headmaster, was in the middle seat. The seat next to him was empty--probably being reserved for Professor McGonagall. Professor Snape sat in the chair beyond that looking as sullen and miserable as ever. As usual, Trelawney was absent from the Beginning of Term feast. Professor Sprout, on the other side of Dumbledore, was chatting with Flitwick. Hagrid the giant came in and took a seat next to the small wizard.

Shanna and Quin sat opposite Natasha. This way it was easier to talk.
"Wonder who will start this year?" Shanna wondered aloud.
"Probably no-one we know." Quin said.
"I may know someone, but you more likely won't know anyone." Shanna said, Shanna had a few more connections to the wizarding world outside school than Quin did.
"As usual, if you stick with me between your classes, you will be fine." Shanna added scencing Quin's sudden nervousness.

Natasha smiled at Quin encouragingly. When she first started school, she was extremely shy. Before that, the only playmates she had were neighbors or cousins. For almost all of her first year, she spoke to no one except for answering questions in class.

But over the summer she had gained more confidence and by the second year, she was much more confident and had become friends with Sean.

She remember that year, someone was targeting Muggleborns. Several of them became petrified by what later turned out to be a Basilisk. The "Heir of Slytherin" had opened the Chamber of Secrets underneath the school.

Now that Natasha thought of it--and truly, it had occurred to her several times--it seemed that every year since she started school something extraordinary (not necessarily good) happened at Hogwarts. Such things had never happened when Mr. Arkham went to school. The Chamber of Secrets hadn't been opened in 50 years, no one had ever broken out of Azkaban, and Nicholas Flamel had lived for years because of the Philosopher's Stone.

Then again, her father hadn't gone to school with the Boy Who Lived, had she?

Professor McGonagall walked in with a long line of this year's new students. There was a single stool at the front of the hall where one would sit and be sorted by the Hat.

After the sorting ceremony ended and all the first years had taken their seats, the headmaster,Dumbledore stood. He began speaking to the school. The usual reminders and anouncements.
"And finally" He said "We are to have the honor of hosting a very exciting event over the coming months, an event that has not been held for over a century. It is my very great pleasure to inform you that the Triwizard Tournament will be taking place at Hogwarts this year." He added.

There was whispers as the students spoke with excitement. The room suddenly hushed as the headmaster spoke again.
"As you know, this will mean we will play host to two other schools this term. Both of whom shall be arriving around halloween." After dumbledore finished speaking the hall could hear a tapping noise followed by shuffling footsteps......

At that moment, there was a deafening rumble of thunder and the doors of the Great Hall banged open.

A man stood in the doorway, leaning upon a long staff, shrouded in a black travelling cloak. Every head in the Great Hall swivelled toward the stranger, suddenly brightly illuminated by a fork of lightning that flashed across the ceiling. He lowered his hood, shook out a long mane of grizzled, dark grey hair, then began to walk up toward the teachers' table.

A dull clunk echoed through the Hall on his every other step. He reached the end of the top table, turned right, and limped heavily toward Dumbledore. Another flash of lightning crossed the ceiling.

Natasha's eyes widened.

The lightning had thrown the man's face into sharp relief, and it was a face unlike any she had ever seen. It looked as though it had been carved out of weathered wood by someone who had only the vaguest idea of what human faces are supposed to look like, and was none too skilled with a chisel. Every inch of skin seemed to be scarred. The mouth looked like a diagonal gash, and a large chunk of the nose was missing. But it was the man's eyes that made him frightening.

One of them was small, dark, and beady. The other was large, round as a coin, and a vivid, electric blue. The blue eye was moving ceaselessly, without blinking, and was rolling up, down, and from side to side, quite independently of the normal eye - and then it rolled right over, pointing into the back of the man's head, so that all they could see was whiteness.

The stranger reached Dumbledore. He stretched out a hand that was as Natasha couldn't hear.

He seemed to be making some inquiry of the stranger, who shook his head unsmilingly and replied in an undertone. Dumbledore nodded and gestured the man to the empty seat on his right-hand side.

The stranger sat down, shook his mane of dark grey hair out of his face, pulled a plate of sausages toward him, raised it to what was left of his nose, and sniffed it. He then took a small knife out of his pocket, speared a sausage on the end of it, and began to eat. His normal eye was fixed upon the sausages, but the blue eye was still darting restlessly around in its socket, taking in the Hall and the students.

Natasha tried not to stare, but she couldn't help it. She had never seen someone so scarred, and the eye didn't help him look any friendlier.

Shanna felt she was the only one who had heard of the stranger. She had a keen intrest in become a Auror when she left school so had researched on many occasions exsisting aurors, and the man in front of them was one of the most famous. She gave a small smile, almost star struck. If she became one bit has good as a auror has he was, she would die happy.

"May I introduce our new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher?" said Dumbledore brightly into the silence. "Professor Moody."

None of the staff or students clapped except for Hagrid and Dumbledore. The sound echoed in the silence. Mostly everyone seemed to be transfixed by Moody's bizarre appearance.

Natasha could hear Harry Potter mutter to his red-headed friend, "Mad-Eye Moody?"

The name rang a bell. She thought maybe she had read his name in the paper, an Auror who had probably fought and arrested many dark wizards in his days. No wonder he was so cratered and pock-marked. Of course, if a reporter had called him Mad-Eye, it was probably meant as an insult, surely.

Much of the Great Hall still seemed shocked.

Alanis glanced at the Ravenclaw table, which was right beside the Slytherin table. Over some students' shoulders, she could see her brother on the other side. Michael, a year older than her, was grinning and nudging a friend at his side, whispering something. She frowned and turned back to Dumbledore.

"He's one of the greatest Auror's ever." Shanna whispered to a confused Quin.
"You know him?" Quin asked.
"Not personally, but I've read about him, he ensured Azcaban was half full of death eaters." Shanna explained.
"He's sounds dangerous." Quin said.
"Good dangerous though." Shanna said.

Dumbledore explained that Hogwarts would be hosting the Triwizard Tournament. Three schools would compete in three separate tasks judged by the Headmasters and some people from the Ministry. An unbiased judge would choose one champion from each school to compete. Only students over seventeen could play in the tournament. (The students were outraged over this and there was murmuring and shouting, the loudest of the protests being from Fred Weasley).

The schools visting this year would be the Bulgarian school Durmstrang (though Natasha knew the school wasn't actually located in Bulgaria) and the French school Beauxbatons. The guests would arrive on October 30--they would attend school at Hogwarts all year during the Tournament--and all students over seventeen would have their chance to sign up for one day, until Halloween.

Oh, and there would be no Quidditch matches. This was met with booing, hissing, and more shouting.

There was still anger from disappointed under-aged students--as well as those who played and enjoyed Quidditch--but there was also a swell of excitement in the air. Foreign students coming to Hogwarts for the whole year! And a Tournament would take place here, one that hadn't happened in three-hundred years!

It could be very exciting. But it could also be very dangerous.

Discussions began about who the Hogwarts champion may be and what the visiting students would be like. The great feast didn't even quieten the noise. Lots of exciting things were happening this year.
