It was a gloomy day in Gotham City. It was bitter cold out, a wet kind of chill that seeped into your bones and could not be dispelled with any kind of warmth. It had rained the previous night and fog hovered over the pavement as people walked to work, shivering and rubbing their hands and arms.

Jane Napier stood at the window of her apartment, peering out. Her stomach was swollen to eight months of pregnancy. She wore warm pajamas, thick socks, and had her hands concealed beneath her arms, folded across her chest. But she was still cold.

She watched as people passed on the sidewalk, on their way to the office yet again. Stapling paper, answering calls, typing, typing, typing. The same thing every day for a meager salary. Some lived from paycheck to paycheck. Some were being evicted from their homes.

Eviction. How much longer would it be until her and her family's luck ran out and they faced the same future? She had worked as long as she could until she couldn't anymore. It was doctor's orders to take time off. She needed to use that last month--until she hit the nine month mark--to rest and wait for the baby.

This was supposed to be a joyous time. She was having another baby--a daughter--with her husband. She'd always hoped she would find someone who loved her for her, someone to marry, someone who would be a father to Alex. She'd never wanted another kid--Jack had always wanted kids--but their daughter came unexpectedly. There wasn't much room in the apartment, and they'd had to set up a baby bed in their own bedroom.

This was supposed to be a time of excitement, but all she felt was dread.

Jack's motto was that the world was mad, utterly insane. That was the law. It would always be that way. One could never know what was really the truth. Maybe "truth" was in our minds. Maybe WE were crazy. A person who believed he was perfectly sane was, indeed, certainly insane. The crazy people believed their insanity to be normal.

Wasn't it crazy that we all got one shot at life, and we spent it working ourselves to the bone? Working to stay alive, to have food and a home. Working to stay alive so we could work some more to stay alive. It was work, work, work. Every single person on the street had something to be miserable for. Disappointments, failures. Utter pointlessness. And that's what life was. Chance and chaos.

Usually he talked about it lightheartedly, but Jane knew it bothered him deeply. He was never satisfied, she knew. Perhaps that's why they suited each other best. She could not remember a time in which she'd ever been content. She had always wanted or needed more.

Jane was snapped out of her thoughts by the sound of Jack walking into the livingroom. "I'm going out now," he said.

"Job interview?" she asked.

He nodded and walked over to her. He rested his hand on her bump. The baby, she knew, had been sleeping all morning.

"I have a good feeling about this one, Jane," he said, smiling a little. That smile, once so big and happy, never reached his eyes anymore. "Trust me. I think this is what we've been waiting for."

"I hope so," she said, forcing a smile onto her face. She'd learned to not allow herself to become disappointed.

"If I get the job, I'll get a paycheck this weekend. I can fix that heater and pay the rent."

She nodded.

"We'll be fine," he said, watching her. "I swear."

"I believe you," she said quietly.

Twelve year old Alex walked into the room, his hair sticking up on all ends.

"Got your teeth brushed?" Jane asked.

He nodded sleepily.

"Hair?"

He nodded again.

Jane rose an eyebrow. "Really?"

He walked away, grumbling.

She sighed.

"Is he taking the bus?" Jack asked, putting on his jacket.

"Supposed to."

"I'll take him. School is on my way."

Alex came back with his hair significantly flattened and his book bag on his shoulder.

"Ready?" Jack asked him. Jane knew he regarded him as his own son, and the two had gotten along since day one.

Alex shrugged. "No."

Jack grinned, heading to the door.

"Why do I have to go to school every day?" Alex muttered.

"So you don't turn out like me. I got no job and no one who wants to hire me," Jack said seriously. He glanced at Jane and shrugged. "Except for the guy who wants to hire me today."

She nodded.

Alex sighed and walked out the door. Jack turned and kissed her before following.

She shut the door behind them.

A secret base lay hidden deep underground. This was the base of one of the world's leading criminal organisations. The V-Squad. The Gotham base was the orginal and where it's leader and her team reside. Among the team of 5 was the Leader's fiancee. She was blonde haired, green eye'd and only 21 years of age.

She currently laid peacefully asleep beside her love. She was unaware that it was only a matter of time before her perfect world would shatter. A time that would test her every fiber of her being. But for now, she lived in blissful ignorance. Sleeping peacefully.

She opened her eyes that morning to find herself looking directly into a set of blue eyes, despite having her back to her love.
"Mummy. Wake up." The voice the eyes belong to said. A very young voice. That of her 3 and 3/4 year old daughter's. The young women sat up.
"Morning sweetheart." She said in a british accent. The daughter grinned wide and climbed on to the bed.
"Is mother awake?" The child asked looking to the women beside her 'mummy'

"Now she is." Angelica turned over and looked at them.

She had once tried to put her foot down about Scarlett coming into their room in the morning, but Fiona wouldn't allow it. There had been fighting, and Angelica, for once, gave up.

Her hair was long, past her shoulders. Even waking up, she was just as sexy as if she was strutting down the halls of the base wearing all leather.

Scarlett crawled to the middle of the bed so she was between her two parents.
"Your a lazy bones mother." Scarlett giggled. Fiona climbed out of bed. She tied her waist length hair into a simple bun and picked Scarlett up off the bed.
"Let's go get breakfast started now everyone's awake." Fiona said.
"I wanna stay here." Scarlett whined.
"Mother will come and talk in the kitchen. Won't you?" Fiona said directing the question to Angelica.

Angelica was sitting up and getting out of bed. "After I dress, yes," she said. She went to the walk-in closet.

She had rows of different kinds of clothes, very few of which a normal person would wear on a normal day. But she was not a normal person.

Fiona would dress after Scarlett was dressed and had breakfast. It always took Fiona a while to get ready so it was easier just to get Scarlett sorted out first then she could concentrate on herself. She took Scarlett to the Kitchen. She put Scarlett on her special booster seat at the table with a few toys and a colouring book. And began preparing breakfast of American Pancakes and syrup. (As requested by Scarlett.)

Angelica took a shower--her showers were always strictly in the morning, unless she's been on a mission--dried her hair, and dressed. It didn't take long. She never took her time unless she had to.

She went to the V-Squad private kitchen. Lauren and Samuel were there, eating what had been prepared for them by the chefs.

Fiona (if she could) always prepared her daughter's meals. When she had first arrived at the base just over 4 years earlier she'd had a dispute with many of the 'servents' mainly the chefs. So refused to allow them to cook for her or her daughter. She set Scarlett's breakfast in front of her (Ignoring all the dirty looks from the chefs) and smiled at Angelica.
"I can finally say good morning now." She said.

Angelica walked over to her and placed a hand on Fiona's hip as she kissed her on the lips. She looked over at Scarlett, then the obviously irritated chefs, then back to Fiona. A small smile played at her lips. "Indeed."

Fiona wrapped her arms around Angelica's neck and kissed back.
"Any plans for today?" She asked.

"I'm gloriously and delightfully free of meetings today." She grinned. "All that's on my agenda is looking over blueprints for the newest base."

The new one was being set up in Metropolis. She had wanted to establish it years before, but there were issues involving bribing politicians.

Fiona smiled.
"We can spend the rest of the day together."
"Me too!" Scarlett injected.

"I meant just us two. But apprently not." Fiona said with a small giggle. "We'll sneak out if you want to." she whispered so Scarlett couldn't hear.
"Let's go to the park!" Scarlett said.

She glanced at her daughter, a bit of a smirk on her face. "I prefer your idea," Angelica said softly, so only Fiona could hear.

She looked at Scarlett. "What interests you there?" She always spoke to Scarlett this way, using words you would never use with a four year old. Scarlett was surely used to it by now.

"I thought you might." Fiona answered just as quietly.
"Friends to play with." Scarlett replied smiling sweetly.

"Friends?" she said, surprised. She looked at Fiona. "Our daughter has friends?"

"Yes she has friends. How else would she learn how to socialise properly?" Fiona asked frowning slightly at Angelica's surprise.

"And how does she interact with them?" she asked. "She does not allow herself to be controlled?"

"She interacts like any other four year old. In fact, I'd say she was bossier than the other children. Now who does that remind me of?" Fiona asked raising a eyebrow. Scarlett was most diffinatly Angelica's daughter.
