He watched her as she spoke. He nodded. "Okay. That's all I needed to know." He smiled. "I'll see you."

"See you." Fiona responded. She waited until She was sure he was gone before entering the base herself. She wondered how much longer she could keep up the lie. They'd all think her weak and helpless if they knew. They couldn't find out.

Jason walked into the briefing room. Angelica was sitting at the end of the conference table, typing something into the large screen at the side of the room, using a cordless mouse and keyboard. She didn't look up as he approached.

He waited for her to acknowledge him. When she was done doing whatever she was doing, she swiveled slightly in her chair and looked up. "Jason."

"Yes?"

A small smile appeared on her face. This wasn't good.

"I see you enjoyed leading your own team."

"It was a job, and I did it."

"Of course. I have faith that you have not forgotten whose team this is." She smiled a bit wider. He felt like he was staring into the mouth of a predator. He was unafraid, but still a bit put off.

"How could I forget?" he said, almost spitting it.

She stood up. "You made many mistakes today."

"Really?" he asked in a tone that sounded polite.

"Indeed. The job was quite sloppy."

"But the job was done. Was that not the point of this test? To lead the team in an emergency, if I have to someday?"

"The point was to lead this team accurately, to not put your subordinates in unnecessary danger because you still need them to work with you. The members left bodies for anyone to find and call the authorities, and we would not have known until the cops arrived."

"But they didn't, and no one found anything."

"There was the woman who approached the office--"

"And Fiona terminated her," Jason interrupted.

Angelica looked at him sharply. Anyone who knew what was good for them did not interrupt a Volkova.

"And if she hadn't? What then, Jason?" she snarled.

"I think you're making this bigger than it is. The job was done, no one caught us. I don't recall hearing that you're averse to leaving bodies behind on a mission. It builds your reputation of danger, am I right?"

"What do you know about reputation?" she snapped.

"I dunno, ask the authorities in London," he snapped back. A smirk came to his face.

She walked over slowly, regarding him shrewdly. She sat on the table next to him. "You seem to be getting along quite well with Fiona," she said, her voice suddenly casual.

"She's pleasant. And we're fellow countrymen" He gazed up at her evenly. "You seem surprised."

"And you seem comfortable. Overly so."

"This is my home now. The others are my team members. Is there any reason that I shouldn't be comfortable?" he challenged.

"There is a reason that you should not become comfortable with my fiancee," she said coldly, glaring daggers at him. "And that is for the simple fact that she is mine."

He laughed now. "I see. You think I want Fiona for myself?" He stood up. This was another risky move. None of the members (except for Fiona) were allowed to leave Angelica's presence during such a discussion without first being dismissed by the boss herself. "Perhaps you need to get out more. I'm not interested in Fiona like that. Further, she's not a prize for you to own. She's her own person. You should treat her like one."

Angelica stood. "Don't you dare tell me how to treat my fiancee. I know you're better than you ever have and ever will. And I can assure you that to me, she's more than a blond with a nice body. That's more than you can say. Now get out of my sight, and be glad I don't sack you for that pathetically ignorant comment!"

"You know her better than anyone else? Then ask her why she's so quiet!"

Angelica slammed him against the wall. He stood there. He could easily break her with his strength. Instead, he smiled.

"As I said, you do not know her," Angelica said darkly, in a low, dangerous voice. "Begone." She let go.

"Gladly." He walked out.

After Fiona returned she went to check on Scarlett. The Nannies informed her that Scarlett never woke up from her busy day so they left her in bed to sleep. Fiona didn't mind. If she needed her sleep. She needed her sleep. She then went to her room. The other team members were probably celebrating. But Fiona had had enough of social interaction for the day. She sat down on the bed. She'd spent most of the day hidding how she felt inside. And now she was alone the barriers all fell along with the tears.

Angelica remained in the briefing room for some time in thought. She sensed that Jason was telling the truth when he said he was not interested in Fiona. Nor did she sense that he had ever meant any harm to her.

This had gone on long enough. She needed to speak to Fiona about it--no excuses, no avoidance.

So after she made up her mind, she went off to look for Fiona. She checked Scarlett's room, but she was sleeping. She checked the kitchens and asked some of the other members if they'd seen her. Lauren said she saw Fiona go to her quarters. So Angelica followed the trail. She entered their room.

Upon hearing the door go Fiona stood up. She made sure Angelica didn't see her face and walked into the bathroom locking the door. She stood over the sink. Holding onto it as if she couldn't hold herself up. She waited. Hopefully Angelica wasn't going to be long.

Angelica took off her jacket. "Fiona, I want to talk with you when you're finished," she called.

Fiona looked at the door. That wasn't what she wanted to hear. Most people would at most wait an hour before giving it up as a bad job. Angelica would wait all night to speak with her if she had to. As tempting as hidding in the bathroom all night was. She knew Angelica wouldn't give up. She gave a sad sigh.
"Is it important?" Fiona called back as evenly as she could muster. She clutched the sink to stop her voice cracking and tears falling.

"Yes," she replied. She listened to Fiona's voice closely.

"Can it wait until tommorow? I'm not feeling very well." She lied. She really didn't want to face her. She had a good inkling what about. But she didn't want to face her at all. About anything. She watched as a tear dripped off her face into the basin below. She wiped her eyes with her hands. She was working her hardest to stay silent when she wasn't speaking.

Angelica knew Fiona well enough by now to hear the pain in her voice. All of this was beginning to feel all too familiar.

"I know you're not. That is what I want to talk about." She stood near the bathroom door.

"I promise you. I'm fine." Fiona said although this time she couldn't hide the sob that followed.

Angelica heard that. She touched the doorknob. "Fiona?" she asked. This time her voice was softer (softer for Angelica).

Fiona walked to the door. She touched the lock. She was considering facing her but also considering pushing past and running. And not returning until the pain stopped. She opened the door. And went to run...

Angelica stood there. She recognized the preparation for flight--perhaps literally--and held her arms out to Fiona.

"Wait!" she said quickly. "I know something has happened. Why do you not speak to me?"

Fiona fell into her arms. Tears streaming down her face.
"I just can't." She said quietly. She couldn't bring herself to say anything even if she wanted to.

And that's when Angelica was sure. Every other flimsy theory was dashed once Fiona fell into her arms and cried for the first time in front of her. She automatically wrapped them around her fiancee. She'd never had to comfort her this way, and didn't know where to start.

She remembered things in years past that she had put behind her, things she'd refused to think about but now had no choice but to reconsider. It had been painfully obvious. A woman of her intellect--as well as her experience--should have known straightaway. But now she did.

She stayed silent, in both shock, uncertainty and growing anger. But not at Fiona.

Now the tears were freely flowing Fiona had no control whatsoever over then. They just kept coming and coming. After a few mintues of Sobbing into Angelica's arms, she spoke quietly.
"I'm so sorry."

Angelica pulled back. "Sorry." It was kind of a question, and kind of a repeat of what Fiona had said. Confused, she repeated, "You're sorry. Why?"

"Because I didn't stop him. Because I've hurt and betrayed you becuase I didn't stop him." She spoke quietly as if each word was the hardest thing in the world to pronounce.
