Dragonbane stared at him. "Who are...." she trailed off, backing away. "Shouldn't I be asking you that question?" He laughed. "Jack?" she whispered. This was not the man she had known. This was a grotesque caricature of him. "Jack? No, you clearly have the wrong guy. But you got one letter right!" "What happened to you?" she asked. He took a step forward. She took a step back in retreat, disgusted and horrified. "'What happened'?" he repeated. "I saw the light! What else?" He cackled. He stepped toward her more. She felt her skin rise in goosebumps, and the hair on her arms and neck stand straight. Fire blazed out of her palms. "This isn't funny!" "Of course this is funny! You shouldn't act like that. Your seriousness is like a poison. It doesn't help anything, it only strangles you." She glanced at the scars on his face. "We need to get you to the hospital. Something's not right...." "Arkham? The looney bin?" He laughed. "You're so predictable! And you can't even see just how dull you really are." "No, not Arkham!" she snapped. "You're sick and hurt, and we need to get you to the doctor." Her voice was cracking. "No, Miss 'Dragonbane', I am alive and well." He held his arms out. "I hoped that our first acquaintance would go smoother than this." "First? Jack, I know it's you. Stop pretending you're not my husband." Her own words sounded pathetic to her ears, but she was merely saying the first things that came to mind. He bounded toward her. Now would have been a good time to attack. But she couldn't. "You're scared," he observed. "Of me. Don't hide it, I can see it plain on your face. You never could hide how you felt. Those negative emotions was always your weakness." He backed her against a rusted column holding the roof up. He jerked the glasses off her face, tossing them across the room. She barely noticed. "What happened to you?" she repeated. "I had a little run-in with a guy who thinks he's a bat. But who am I to break it to him?" He grinned. "You disappeared that night...." "I started over." "You left me and Alex!" He paused for just a moment before replying. "Is that what happened? That was another guy. You'll figure it out soon enough." "I thought you were dead--" "No, not dead. Resurrected. It looks like both of us have that in common." "What?" "You died and now you're here. Or is it you're here and soon you'll die? So hard to keep up with...." "I never died! We lost the apartment. Alex and I are okay. The baby...." She trailed off. He waved this away. "Spare me the speech. Are you gonna join me or not?" "Join you?" she repeated in horror. "For what?" "In my new life. No worries, all chaos. You'll see it once you leave everything behind. When you realize that none of it matters." She felt like she'd been slapped--no, stabbed was a better word for it, to be told that she and Alex did not matter. |

Fiona felt herself get angry. It was a shock to find out how close he was to Dragonbane, but a bigger shock to find out how close he'd been to her son, Alex whom she saw as a son. If only Dragonbane knew the truth about that man. The truth she was to ashamed to speak. How would Dragonbane feel then? Fiona needed to get involved. But she was waiting for the right moment. |

He traced his knife across her face. He used it to tuck a strand of loose hair behind her ear. She jerked her head away, in shock. This was clearly his face, his hands, his body. But this was not him. How? The word ran through her head over and over. "Why don't you come with me?" she asked through grit teeth. "And go back to the old life? I already said I'm a new man. There's no going back. Join me, and you'll know." She glanced at the knife. There was dried blood at the ends of the blade. She leaned away from him. "I will never join you. What you've become...." He grinned again. "So you finally get it. I knew you wouldn't join me. Do you really think I would bring anything from my old life into my new one? I could say I'm enlightened, but of course every man who's ever said that was merely repeating the illusion set before him. Every person goes along with the illusion. You see it but it's not there. And you, continue it, Dragonbane, with your chasing in circles. A waste of time." He pinned her against the column with his weight, then grabbed the back of her head, holding her there firmly. "And just like everything else in the old life, you'll be destroyed, then your kid." He pressed the blade to her mouth. |

"Assuming of course you live long enough." Fiona spoke. She came out of her hiding place, still disguised. Hopefully he didn't recognise her. |

He turned to look at her. "I see we have a guest. Come on in, make yourself at home, enjoy the show. Just keep in mind I might ask for a hand from the audience." Dragonbane--Jane--stared at Fiona, wondering why she was here. Could she be in league with Jack (or whatever he called himself)? |

Fiona rolled her eyes. She hid her fear expertly and tried to hide her small baby bump. "If you hurt her. I can assure you, that your life won't be worth living." She didn't add 'Your life is already on the line.' |

"Tell me, why should I be afraid of you?" he asked quizzically. |

Fiona smiled. "Trust me. You don't want to find out." |

"You're bluffing." He smiled. Dragonbane grabbed the hand with the knife and shoved it away from her with great force. She pushed him away. He backed away a few steps. He glanced from Jane to Fiona with a grin. "Looks like I have two feisty ladies today. Lucky me." |

"But your a married man. Wouldn't want to upset the wife anymore now would we?" Upset her again. she thought meaning her pregnancy would upset Jane if she knew. |

Jane glanced at her. She must have heard everything. He rolled his eyes. "Do I have to go through this again? That guy known as Jack was married." "Look, Jack. I dunno what game you're playing--" "Jack? Haven't you heard? They call me Joker now!" "They? Joker?" She frowned. "That's my name. Don't wear it out!" He touched the tip of his knife. She took another quick look at Fiona. She hadn't yet noticed the slight baby bump. Instead, she was studying her face, trying to figure out why she had come here--clearly, she had followed them--and what she intended to do. He turned to Fiona. "And you. Nice try, but I could recognize you anywhere, Miss Fiona." |

Fiona gave a small smile. "Don't let your ego get the best of you. It's not you or her I'm attempting to hide from." She removed the wig and let her hair fall loose. Running her fingers through it she smiled wider. "Much better." |

"Your pretending doesn't fool me. we both know you thought I wouldn't know it was you." He laughed. "What a knee slapper! i will never forget your face--and i know mine is burned into your head. forever." He grinned. jane looked from fiona to this man who called himself the Joker, confused. |

Fiona glanced at Jane. Showing no fear. Showing no emotion from that last comment. It was not any of her business. "Well at least there's something we agree on. No matter how much make up you wear. You can never truly hide from the outside world. Someone's always going to recognise you. And you want to hope they aren't out for blood. The question you want to ask yourself. Do you think I'm out to spill your blood?" |

He shook his head, unfazed, a smile on his face. "Why should I hide from the world? Our of fear? You think I should be afraid of you? No, I show myself freely. This--" he motioned to the makeup on his face, "is apart of me. I'm finally showing just who I really am. You're playing pretend, but you're scared. Was our last meeting as memorable for you as it was for me?" |

Fiona gave a shrug. Still refusing to show anything other than confidence. "Our last meeting? I barely remember it. Does that upset you? I can't say that I'm completely downhearted for you." |

"What 'meeting'?" Jane demanded, a strange feeling of dread rising in her back and stomach. She was almost worried to receive an honest answer. Which of course she didn't get. The Joker turned to her. "Nosy, nosy," he said, raising a quizzical eyebrow. "Does it bother you? Are you...jealous?" "Enough of this," she snapped. "You're not hurting anyone today. I don't know what's wrong with you--I don't know what happened. Whatever it is, you know I have no choice but to take you in. And after everything you've done, I'll gladly do so." She tried to add venom to her voice. He grinned. "And so the game begins. It's about time. You have no idea how bored I've been." He rolled his eyes. |

Fiona looked to Jane with a smile. "Let's take him down. Together." She said as a wind began to blow through the otherwise still area. The wind made her hair dance. And was slowly getting stronger. |

Jane hesitated, then nodded. They had their differences, but she didn't think that this was a trap. "Now, girls, I hate to disappoint you, but things aren't going to go as you planned today." He pulled out a gun now. He trained it on Jane. Somehow, the sight of a gun made this all worse. "Jack...." Jane gasped. He looked at her. "Deaf, this one. Are you not listening? Jack is dead," he snarled. "And soon you and your son will join him." "Don't count on it," she snapped, fire engulfing her hand. But he was already running through the building in the opposite direction. |

"More of a coward than I thought." Fiona muttered. She mounted a cloud. She'd have a better vantage point from above. |
