Jane soared upward and followed him from above, dodging obstacles. She would not let him touch Alex. She wondered if that was the only reason why the Joker had fled--so she could live with the knowledge that her son had been killed. Before, of course, the same happened to her. That was what he probably intended, anyway. Not that it would actually happen. She would not allow it. He shot out of the building. |

Fiona followed. She too would not allow anyone to hurt Alex. That with the added need to give him what he deserved. She was most certainly going to finish this. No matter what. |

Even though the two women could fly, the Joker was proving troublesome in his escape. Jane raced after him as fast as she could, but at one point he even ducked into the underground, knowing it would be difficult for them to give chase. No one wanted to move for Jane, but once they caught sight of a criminal Fiona apparently pursuing her, they cleared the way fast. Jane made sure that they could not see her face. The Joker ran up another set of stairs and surfaced to the streets. Jane knew he was heading for Alex. He was heading for the apartment she now shared with her son. So apparently the clown man had tracked down their whereabouts. Before long, they arrived on the block on which the Napiers lived. Jane saw him race into the building. She landed a ways away in an ally and hastily threw off the clothes that could identify her as Dragonbane. Then she ran inside and up the stairs. |

Fiona who'd followed the whole way took a short cut. She searched the windows (Ignoring shock or fear from fellow residents) until she came across the one room she was looking for. Alex's. She saw him there and knocked. |

He started, dropping a book to the floor, then whirled around to face the window. His eyes widened in shock when he saw Fiona, then a smile came to his face. He had been seven years old the last time Fiona had seen him. At eleven, almost twelve, Alex looked more or less the same, but he was much taller and a bit thinner than before. His hair was just as unkempt as always, never seeming to want to stay neat. He was at that awkward, gangly stage. |

"Sweetie. Let me in." Fiona said as loud as she dared. She didn't want to panic him or rasie much attention to anyone else. |

He ran to the window, unlocked it and pulled it open. "Fiona?" he asked with surprise. "What are you doing here?" * * * Jane stood there, with the Joker between her and the door. He was a few feet away. "You're not going in," she snapped. "I think I am." He placed his hand on the handle. "It's locked," she said, eyes narrowing. "And now it's time to go." He grinned at her. He then twisted the handle and the door opened. She stared in bewilderment, then mentally face-palmed herself. She'd recently began allowing Alex to walk home by himself, as the school was only a block away. But he had a habit of forgetting to lock the door once he was home, and she'd lectured him too many times to count but he still wouldn't remember. She watched as the man she once knew turned on his heel and went inside. She followed. |

Fiona stepped on the windowsill and held out her hand. "Sweetie, there's no time to explain. But I need you to come with me and hide yourself somewhere. I promise I'll explain after." |

Alex stepped up to the window, reaching to take her hand. His door burst open. The Joker stood at the threshold, pointing a gun to Alex's forehead. Jane ran up behind him. "STOP! Don't you dare, or I'll burn you to a crisp, I SWEAR IT!" she snarled. Her hands blazed with furious fire. The Joker still grinned. |

Fiona pulled Alex outside blocking him from the gun. "Go on. Shoot me. I dare you. Just remember, light travels faster than a bullet does. Even at point blank range." She of course meant lightening. |

"Back away," she snapped at Joker. He still pointed the gun at them, but he did not shoot. Jane wondered what he was thinking, if he thought any coherent thoughts anymore. |

"Have it your way." Fiona said with a shrug. In one swift movement she stepped aside, grabbed Alex's shoulder and as fast she she could made the cloud drop to the ground. Fiona then quickly turned to Alex. "Sweetie. Run and hide. Me and your mum will stop him. We'll come find you when it's all over." |

A gunshot sounded from inside. Alex jumped and looked up. "Mum!" |

"Sweetie. It's going to be ok. Please just go and hide." Fiona urged. She didn't wait for a responce. She simply returned to the window as fast as she could. She figured the bullet had been shot after the two of them. |

A dark hole could be seen in the white wall of the hallway where Jane had been standing, the bullet having barely missed hitting her. The man in purple had actually shot at her. She couldn't believe it. But this was reality. Now she plunged forward at Joker, whipping her fire at him. But she had to be careful in such a small, flammable space. She couldn't repeat the mistake she had made several months before. She knew this, but she found it hard to concentrate on not doing so while still trying to fight the Joker. And she felt angry, she now realized. Angry at him having left her and Alex that night so long ago to commit a crime. Whatever happened to him (perhaps it had even happened that night) had changed him, and he was not Jack Napier anymore. Jack was dead, and in his place was this grotesque abomination, a caricature of a man, a nightmare. |

Fiona saw the problem. The small area could cause problems. She needed some way to let Jane use her powers without endangering the building. Alex needed somewhere to live after all and she would break down if the building went down. So she set a rain cloud high above and let the rain fall. It was enough to put out any fire that were to start but not enough to stop Jane attacking HIM. She glared at the Joker. "Just leave them be." She said feeling her own anger rising. She was detirmined he'd get what he deserved. |

"And miss out on all the fun? Not for the world. As for you, we both know you have a new reason to stay safe." He smiled viciously, whipping the gun in her direction. He was training it at her middle. |

He cackled. "That's the best lie I've heard all day! You don't want Jane here to know, is that it?" Taking the opportunity, Jane suddenly grabbed him and jerked back so he fell back with her. He shot the gun. The bullet went through the ceiling. Her hands were searing his arms but he barely even made a sound. She let go and stood. He jumped up too. "Clever. You almost had me monologuing." |

"That's a pity for you. I'm sure you love the sound of your own voice." Fiona said rolling her eyes. |

"So, what happens next? There's a plethora of possibilities." |
