Chapter 1
Playtime for the Mothers

It was nearing 7:00 PM in Jump City and Mary Jane Marie Powers was in her kitchen preparing supper. Her large three-story house stood on the beach. Her son, Alexander Benjamen Powers, who was twelve years old, was up in his room, blasting music.

"Dinner's ready!" Jane called to her son, who's room was upstairs.

The music continued, and he didn't answer.

"You had better get down soon!" she said. "It'll get cool!"

No answer.

She scowled.

Jane was born in London, England, but her mother was Irish and her biological father, a supervillain named Slade, was from the United States. She had grown up thinking her mother's husband, Alan, was her father, but this turned out to be wrong. When she was fourteen, she met Jason Watson, a Mexican-Englishman. They got together and after a few months she lost her virginity to him and then found she was pregnant. Her parents shunned her and sent her to Jump City where her aunt Angela lived. Jane lived for four years with her aunt and her three cousins and moved out at age eighteen with her son, Alex. When she was twenty, she got fire superpowers and became a superhero.

Her side job beside being a superhero was writing. She had already written several novels. She loved writing. She mostly wrote about her real life experiences in being a hero, but told no one they were true stories. Her favorite subject to write about was her arch-nemesis: Fiona....

Elsewhere in the city stood the H.I.V.E Academy, an infamous school for villains. Below the school was a base for an elite team of villains called the V-Squad. Among them was a young woman under the name of Fiona. She was twenty-one, had short, curled, blond hair and bright, green eyes. She was was finishing preparations for dinner, much to the anger of the servants and chefs. She gave a smile has she plated up the last meal.

"A good meal before a mission always keeps you alert," she said to herself. A chef scowled at her but Fiona merely ignored him. She had been there five years and the chefs had never forgiven her for make a old colleague quit, but it wasn't her loss.

She grabbed the three plates like a professional and walked to the dining hall where her girlfriend and adopted daughter waited.

"Mummy!" Selena cried out. She jumped up in her chair.

Fiona smiled.

"Alright, sit down. You're going to get ill if you're too giddy when you eat," she said to Selena as she placed the plates on the table. Although it wasn't as strong anymore, Fiona's accent was British. After all, she had lived in America for almost six years now.

She smiled at her girlfriend. "You're always so cheery. It makes me wonder how you don't get tired," she said jokingly noticing the mood wasn't completely cheerful.

Selena giggled.

Just then walked in Angelica. She had longer black hair by then, held up by a silver clip that had once been her mother's. She looked grouchy, but she wasn't so grouchy as she had been years before. Back then, she had been terrible. Love had softened her heart...a bit. Her Russian accent was thick now, but it had been thicker when she was younger. She had lived in the United States for a while now. Her ruby red lips were in a snarl.

"If I didn't know any better I would think I'm pregnant!" She sat down by her daughter who was almost identical to her. Indeed, she had been pregnant many times. But when Selena came, she didn't have to abort her. And she was glad.

"Mummy!" Selena said. "Um, other Mummy!"

Fiona rose an eyebrow.

"Should I be worried?" she asked Angelica. Pregnancy could mean only one thing, and that was she'd been cheating.

It wasn't new for Angelica to cheat--that's what villains did. But she hadn't cheated in three months, so pregnancy was an impossibility.

She sighed. "No." She saw the skeptical look on Fiona's face and said, "I promise."

Fiona gave a small frown but nodded. "Alright, I believe you. Dinner's ready, by the way."

"What are we having?"

The chef interrupted. "Ma'm, I have prepared a feast fit for a queen! She has prepared a feast fit for low peasants!"

"Oh, shut up!" Angelica snapped.

Fiona stuck her tongue out at him.

"It's only something simple, really. Homemade toad in the hole," she said, with a smile. She loved tormenting the chefs. She looked at Selena, still smiling. "Selena's favorite."

Selena licked her lips, while Angelica groaned. "We had that last night."

Fiona sighed. "No, we didn't. Last night we went out. Did you forgot?"

"We have recently."

"Selena found a toad in the hole last week. But we haven't actually eaten it in about a month," Fiona said truthfully.

They finished their food and Angelica stood abruptly. "I'm going to see Laren's grave. Who wants to come?"

Laren had been one of the five team members of the V-Squad and was killed when Slade sent a surge of energy through the base.

Fiona shuck her head. "No thanks. Someone needs to get Selena off to bed."

She debated whether she should stay and help or go visit her long lost friend.

Fiona stood and piled up the plates.

"You go if you want to. I'm going to get ready for bed once she's sleeping," said as she picked the plates up. "Selena, come help me wash up."

Angelica headed out the door, her cloak in hand. Selena jumped up from the table and went to help her mummy clear the dishes.

Fiona put the plates in the sink and looked down at Selena.

"Do you want a stool or a cloud?" she asked. Both ways would elevate Selena high enough to reach the sink.

The little girl giggled. "Silly mummy! I want a cloud!"

Fiona smiled. She always gave the same answer. She rose Selena up on a cloud.

"Washing or drying?" Fiona asked, making the bubbles.

"Drying!"

Fiona handed her a drying towel and put some soap bubbles on Selena's head.

"If we clean you good enough here, I won't have to run a bath," Fiona joked. She blew some bubbles off her hand.

Fiona sighed as she handed the last plate to Selena. "All done," she said with a smile. She felt like Angelica was getting more and more distant from her.

Angelica stood in front of the small stone she hated so much. Laren's grave, neat with black flowers resting on it, read:

LAREN
LOYAL FRIEND
LOYAL TEAMMATE
1985 - 2006

Angelica pulled up the hood of her cloak and walked off, back to the academy.

She arrived at home and went to the roof, running her fingers through he hair and stretching.

By now, Fiona was tucking Selena into bed.

"You know where we are if you have a scary dream, don't you?" she asked.

Selena smiled and nodded. "But I'm a big girl."

Fiona gave a small laugh.

"Yeah, I know you are. But even big girls have scary dreams and need a cuddle sometimes." She herself was a living example of that. She often had nightmares of a night that changed her life forever--the night her mother died and her father abandoned her.

* * *

Fiona walked to the bedroom she shared with Angelica and put on her PJ's.

She wished Angelica would tell her why she's so miserable. It wasn't because she thought she was pregnant, but she couldn't think of why else.

Angelica smiled at Fiona. "Hey."

Fiona smiled back. "Hi." She sat down on the bed.

"We should go out sometime," Angelica groaned. "We never get to, and when we do we have to bring Selena."

"We should. But who would look after Selena? You don't want Salzarr to and Deathenvay, she wouldn't," Fiona replied, wrapping up in the covers and picking up a book.

As Fiona and Angelica talked, a tall figure approached them.

"Fiona, Angelica, front and center on the double!" It was Chief Kerensky. He was one the top lieutenants in the H.I.V.E., and a strict commander. He wore a Kevlar jacket and blue jeans, a bandana covered his mouth and nose. "Listen up you two, the boss has a job that needs to get done."

Angelica stared at him sharply. "How did you get in here?!" She stood and looked at him in the eye. "Excuse me, but I am the boss here!" The chief is drinking again, she thought. She walked right up to him, not a bit afraid. "I am the leader of the V-Squad, and the Headmistress of H.I.V.E., and how dare you speak to me like that!"

Fiona covered herself quickly. "There's such a thing has knocking," she said and walked past him and out the door. She sighed once in the hall, and went to her old bedroom, a room where you had to gain permission before entering.

The Chief stared at her, dazed. He was drunk, as usual. He had started drinking heavily after Vietnam. He still remembered the horrors of that war.

"Sorry boss, I'm just drunk. Don't real;y recall Blood gettin' killed when I'm drunk. Still, I got some important intel. There's a bunch of Russian mercs smuggling weapons into the city. I think we need to 'persuade' them to go back to Russia and take over their business."

Fiona walked back into room after cooling off a little. Just in time to hear his speech.

"Please just leave. There are no Russians here other than Angelica. Please take your delusions elsewhere, and don't wake Selena." She hadn't ever really gotten on with Angelica's choice to replace Laren.

Aneglica sighed. This new teammate had started to get annoying with his drunken crazes. Once, he had walked in on Fiona and Angelica doing their thing.

Fiona rolled her eyes and sat back on the bed. He was fast becoming her enemy.

Angelica shut the door behind the chief and sat by Fiona. "We'll have to start locking the doors."

Fiona nodded and picked up the book. "Either that or knock some sense into him."

Angelica crawled over to her. "About that alone time...."

Fiona gave a small smile. "What about it?" she asked, flirty.

"I have a few ideas. What do you think we should do?" She grinned flirtatiously.

Fiona smiled. "I don't know. Maybe. I might refuse."

"Hm, maybe you'll have to do what I say." Angelica grinned.

Fiona smiled and giggled. "Maybe I'll still refuse," she replied in a whisper.

"I have my ways of getting you to do what I want."

Fiona giggled again. "I have my ways of stopping you. Are you willing to risk that?"

"Oh, I am."

Fiona smiled. "Well, go on. Show me how you can make me do something." She rose an eyebrow.

Angelica ran her fingers down Fiona's spine and smiled. "It would be safe not to put up a fight."

Fiona shuddered and giggled. "Where's the fun in that?"

Angelica crawled closer and pressed her lips to Fiona's.

Fiona smiled, wrapped her arms around Angelica and kissed back. "You haven't won yet," she whispered.

The other woman grinned. "I always get what I want."

"Is that a challenge?"

"Hmm, maybe."

Fiona smiled. "Are you teasing me?"

"I always do." Angelica gave a smile. Then she stood and walked flirtatiously away to their bed. "But I guess you're not up for it." She glanced over her shoulder and smiled again.

"I guess you're right." Fiona walked towards the bedroom door, also flirtatiously.

"Hmm, what would I have to do to...prepare you for a challenge?"

"You have to figure that out for yourself," Fiona replied, putting her hand on the door handle.

Angelica grabbed her around the waist and began kissing her neck.

Fiona giggled. "Are you stopping me from leaving?"

"Mmhmm."

Fiona gave another giggle. "And what if I escape?" she whispered.

"I'll catch you and you'll be...punished."

"Is that a threat or a promise?"

She laughed softly. "A promise."

Fiona laughed and then wriggled free from Angelica. She opened the door and ran out into the hall, giggling.

The chief walked down the halls, starting to sober up. "Great, I offer them a chance to get some extra cash, and they think its just a freaking load of crap."

This wasn't the first time they didn't listen to his tips. Then again, they had a good reason not to. Most of the time he was drunk, and when he wasn't, he was deeply depresed. This was the case for many Vietnam veterans. The memories from that war left deep mental wounds. Combined with his wife's death, it was a wonder he hadn't commited suicide. So he drowned his depression in booze. He would deal with the Russian mercs later. For now, it was time to rest.

* * *

Angelica chased Fiona all throughout the halls.

Fiona came to a hall with a dead end. She turned and smiled. "You can't get me," she said, playfully.

"I've managed to before."

"Only because I let you," she whispered flirtatiously.

"Hmm, maybe you'll have to let me this time."

"Maybe I don't want to," Fiona giggled.

"Maybe I'll make you." Angelica smiled flirtatiously.

Fiona smiled back. "Maybe I won't let you make me."

"Maybe you'll have no other choice."

Fiona giggled again. "What are you going to do to me then?"

"Oh, I don't know. Maybe...punish you?"

"Don't punish me," Fiona said, playfully.

"You've been a bad girl."

"But I've been a good girl today though." She fake-pouted.

"And now you're naughty."

"I'm never naughty."

"Then perhaps I'm the naughty one...."

Fiona smiled and wrapped her arms around Angelica. "Maybe it's you who needs to be punished," she whispered.

She pushed up against Fiona. "I've been bad."

Fiona kissed her. "Well you definitely need punishing now," she whispered.

"Oh, I'm so scared!"

"Well, you should be." Fiona kissed her again.

Angelica returned the kiss, wrapping her arms around Fiona's neck.

Fiona giggled. "Come on, lets go back to our room," she whispered.

They went, hand-in-hand, back to their room.

Fiona walked in the room first. She did a running jump onto the bed and started bouncing.

Angelica smiled. "You still act like a child sometimes."

Fiona smiled and giggled. "So what if I do? Adulthood is so boring." She held out her hand for Angelica to join her.

The other woman laughed and took Fiona's hand, getting on the bed and jumping too.

Fiona jumped with her, giggling. "We haven't done this in a while."

"Since Selena, we haven't done much."

"She does take a lot of time up. And then any free time we get we're called away to something else." She sighed. She dropped down on to the bed and laid down.

"It's like living the life of a superhero." Angelica shuddered.

Fiona laughed. "It's not that bad."

The chief finally reached his quarters. It was near the end of the hall, and required a pass-code. He punched in the code, and entered the room. He then examined the rifle that got him through his military and mercenary career, a tricked out M16 with a 30mm grenade launcher and a scope. As he climbed into his hammock, he picked up a photo of his wife.

"Rest in peace, Connie." And with that, he fell asleep.

"Time for bed," Jane told Alex, who was on his laptop computer.

"Hold on."

"Hurry up. It's getting late."
