Chapter 3
The Last Thing She Wanted to Hear

The next day was the same. Angelica and Fiona fixed breakfast (okay, Fiona fixed breakfast) and Selena ate eggs and ham, with green dye added in.

"So you're going to train again today, then?" Fiona asked has she finished her breakfast.

Angelica grumbled. "Yeah. Idiots. It'll take forever to train them." She finished her orange juice.

"Alright then. I suppose I'm having Selena all day again, then."

"No, no. We'll make some time. I don't have to be with the recruits all day. The Chief can handle it. Just maybe for an hour to make sure things are going right. Then we'll spend the day together. We never spend any time together, and today is the perfect day."

Fiona gave a small smile. "I should get that in writing," she joked.

"What do you mean?"

"Nothing." Fiona added, "Although you've said that everyday for while and you have yet to fulfill your promise."

"You know I've been busy. And it's not like we never spend any time together."

"Ten minutes at breakfast. And you've not been that busy."

"You wouldn't know, Fiona. I run a school and a base. I have to be certain all the right lessons are taught properly, that the students are not acting out. I have classes to teach myself, and then I have the V-Squad. I have to make sure people pay us, I have to eliminate threats, I have to make sure our gear is prepared, I have to be sure the servants aren't double crossing us, I have to set up crime opportunities for us. And above all that, I spend time with you two."

"Ever think that some of those things we could actually do together? But you haven't done much of that lately, anyway. Always spending time with that drunkard."

"Excuse me?" Angelica said incredulously. "You, yourself, said those things are dangerous for Selena! And I can't help that I have to spend time with that man! Do you think that I actually want to? I'd give anything to spend that time with Selena and you!"

"Well, show it more often, then. And I know they're dangerous for Selena, but ever think someone could watch her even for an hour just while we did something together?!"

Angelica stood from the table. "You know we can't trust people! People are after us and would kill her, had they the chance!"

"So you're saying you can't trust the members of this team? That's odd! You've already bedded one of them!" Fiona shouted, standing also.

Angelica pounded her fist against the table. "That is none of your business!"

"It is my business! It's been my business ever since Selena was born!" Fiona yelled back.

"Selena has nothing to do with Salzarr," she said in a deadly whisper. "She's not his. I don't care if she has his blood! Besides, that was before I even met you. He is nothing in my life!"

"Why can't you just shut up and apologize when you're in the wrong?! You always have to make some excuse to make yourself sound so innocent!"

That was the last thing she said, because the moment she finished the sentence she walked from the room in anger.

Angelica stood there, her mouth wide open in confusion, anger, and sadness.

Selena walked in just then. "Mummy, why are you and Mummy fighting?"

Angelica didn't answer her. She just sat down.

Fiona sighed. She hated fighting, especially with Angelica, but she made her so mad sometimes. Fiona ran her fingers through her hair and decided to go out and have a day off. But to leave the base, she had to walk past a few bedrooms.

Fiona got to Salzarr's door and stopped. She waited silently for a while, to see if he was in there. After she heard nothing, she made her way past. She had just gotten past the door and sighed. She half hoped he was there and half hoped it wasn't. She felt a small sting of disappointment when she started to realize he wasn't there.

Then his voice could he heard behind her. "You alright?" He was standing behind her, right outside his door.

Fiona turned, slightly surprised, and nodded. "Em, yeah," she said quietly.

"I know that look. Something's bothering you." He stepped closer. "You can tell me."

She frowned. "I have a look?" She shook her head. "It doesn't matter."

"Wanna come inside and talk about it?" He motioned to his door.

She shook her head again. "I was just going to go out."

"Okay. But if you ever want someone to talk to, I'm here."

Fiona looked away, then looked back. "Wait, will you come with me? Please?"

"Um, sure," he said, taken aback by her change of heart.

"Take me anywhere, I'm not bothered," Fiona said with a small smile. She didn't care where she went, as long has she didn't have to stay in the building.

"Uh, the park?"

She nodded. "If you want."

They walked to the park, and everything was peaceful. There was a cool breeze that went blew the trees and birds sang their morning song. Fiona and Salzarr sat by the pond.

Fiona looked at the water and sighed. Normally if she came to the park, Selena would be with her. It seemed so much quieter without her.

"You've fought with Angelica again, haven't you?"

Fiona looked at him silently for a few moments, then nodded with a sigh.

"Whatever she's said to you, don't listen to her. She doesn't know what she's talking about."

"It isn't anything she's said."

"Is it something she did?"

"I don't know," she replied quietly. "All I know is she keeps complaining about us never spending enough time together, yet she's the first one to leave when we do get a little time. Then there's that new guy. She spending far too much time with him."

"Who? Kerensky?"

"If that's his name, then yes. She said she's only training people with him, but she's cheated before with you. I just can't trust what she's saying."

"Well, I hardly think--" He paused. "Wait a minute--cheat with me? She's never cheated with me!"

Fiona put her hands over her mouth, eyes wide. "Forget I said anything." She stood up. Suddenly, she felt light headed and had to grip onto something to stay upright. She could feel herself burning up.

Salzarr stood also. "Listen, nothing happened between Angelica and I. I promise." He stood there for a moment, then his eyes went wide. "Are you okay?"

She waved him off dismissively. "I'm fine." She was still light headed and burning up.

"We should get you back to the base."

Fiona took a deep breath. "I'm fine, really." She didn't like making a fuss.

By chance, the Chief was walking around the same park as Fiona and Salzarr. He had finished with the rookies.

"Hey, kid." They turned to face him. "I heard your argument with Angelica. I swear to you, I will stop drinking. Hell, I'll watch your kid for ya so you two can have time together." He was completely honest.

"Well, if you want to help, you'll help me get Fiona back to the base. She's weak right now," Salzarr said.

"I'm not weak," Fiona lied. Her temperature was getting ever higher and she was starting breath heavier.

"You are right now. You look ill. Let's just go back. Someone's going to catch us here."

Fiona nodded. Getting caught wouldn't have been good, not in her present state. But she wouldn't say that out loud.

"Come on kid, lets get you home," said Kerensky.

The Chief helped her back to base. He knew she was ill. They took Fiona to her room. She seemed to be growing weaker.

"I'm fine," Fiona said as she sat on her bed. She had a roaring temperature and she was getting pale. Her dizziness had gone, but in its place a headache had started.

"Have you eaten anything today?" Salzarr asked. "Your blood sugar could be low."

"I'm gonna get some medicine, she'll need it." Kerensky rushed to the door, heading for the medical lab.

"I'm fine," Fiona repeated. "I don't need medicine." She laid down.

"Bullshit. You're sick, plain and simple."

Salzarr wanted to give her more advice, but didn't say anymore about it. Instead, his mind went back to her saying that he and Angelica had been together. "Look, about Angelica and I, we never were together, I promise. You know I wouldn't lie."

"Just forget I said anything. And if you come near me with anything medical, I'll rip your head off," Fiona said to Salzarr and the Chief in turn.

"Fine, I won't get you medicine." The Chief backed off. "I'll be in the armory if you need me." With that, he turned again to walk out.

"We're only trying to help, Fiona."

"I don't need any help."

"Could've fooled me."

"Ohh, yes, about when you were talking about my drinking problem, I'll tell you why I drink. The armory can wait." The Chief sat down in a chair. "It's a long story, where to start?"

Salzarr just stared at him.

Fiona sat up. "Please, I'm fine. You don't need to be here," she said softly. She figured the kicking and screaming approach wasn't working, so she was trying a new one.

"You don't have to listen, this is about her calling me drunkard without knowing why I drink." The Chief resumed his story. "Well, I suppose it started after Vietnam, I saw a lot of good friends die."

Fiona attempted to stand. "I don't have time for this. I have work to do." But the moment she started to walk, her legs gave way and she grabbed Salzarr to stop herself falling to the floor.

Salzarr quickly grabbed her and put her on the bed. "Enough. I'm getting the nurse."

"Sure, ignore the old 'Nam vet, the one that saw his wife die in a car crash. But you don't give a damn, do ya?"

She shook her head. "I don't need a nurse," she said to Salzarr. She looked at the Chief. "And no one here had a perfect life, but we get on with it. I saw my own mother die and my father abandoned me. I lived on the streets until I was sixteen, but I don't go around trying to get sympathy for it."

"I care," Salzarr said. "But I don't think right now is the time to talk about it."

"I'm not trying to get sympathy, I'm trying to get you to understand why I drink." The Chief was annoyed.

"Please, save it for later," Fiona said. She wondered why Angelica hadn't showed her face yet, even if it wad only to yell. She laid down again and tried to ignore her headache.

"I'm going to the armory. Need to check the guns." With that, the Chief the room.

Fiona couldn't help but feel a little relieved. Even more so when she stopped feeling dizzy. But now she felt a bad headache.

"Should I get Angelica?" Salzarr asked.

"She's probably too busy," Fiona replied, quietly.

"I'm sure she'd want to know you're sick."

Fiona was going to protest her health but stopped herself. "If it'll make you feel better."

"I'm getting Angelica," he said before Fiona could protest again. He ran out the door.

* * *

The Chief got to the armory. The first rack was good, no jamming. But the second rack was missing several guns. He checked the grenades. Several frags were missing. "Son of a bitch!" He ran back to the room, knowing he needed to report this.

Kerensky came bursting into the room. "Someones' been stealing weapons."

Fiona sighed. She wondered how Angelica would react.

"When I find the punk that stole them, his skull will be my new belt-buckle."

Salzarr had to practically drag Angelica into the room. When she finally got in there, she refused to look at or speak to Fiona.

"Did I hear weapons were stolen?" she asked the Chief.

"Told you she wouldn't care," Fiona said to Salzarr.

Angelica looked at Fiona for the first time. "You have the nerve. If I were dying now you wouldn't give a care! You owe me an apology for the disgusting things you told me." She turned to the Chief. "You will meet me in the V-Squad briefing room for information on the stolen weapons." She turned to Salzarr. "And you'll get her to the nurse's office, and I don't care what she says. If she refuses, make her go anyway."

With that, she stormed out of the room.

Fiona looked away from the door. She knew that Angelica knew it was true. No matter how mad they got at each other, if Angelica fell sick, Fiona would be more worried than anything, even if she didn't show it.

Fiona sighed. Despite everything, Angelica was not going to apologize.

She looked at Salzarr. "You're not really going to do as she asks, are you?"

"I'm taking you to the nurse, but not because she asked. I'm doing it because I'm concerned for you. So it's that, or I'll have the nurse come to you."

She sighed again. "Are they my only two options?" She didn't want to see the nurse at all. She was too used to dealing with sickness on her own with no help, medical or otherwise. She looked towards the door. "I'm feeling better. I don't need the nurse." She just wanted to be alone.

The Chief waited in the briefing room. "Well, what do you know about those weapons? That was a brand-new shipment."

Angelica sat in her usual chair. "We can check security tapes and interrogate students and servants."

"Good. Thanks to this I fell like busting in a few skulls." The Chief cracked his knuckles. "Let's get started."

The Chief went through the security tapes and found nothing. Finally, he watched the last tape. One of the rookies had been recorded stealing the rifles and grenades.

"Well, we got our thief. I'll handle this."

The rookie would learn the price for theft at the H.I.V.E., a merciless beating, courtesy of Chief Kerensky.

Angelica followed Kerensky, eager to see someone beaten in her day of anger.

After a long walk, the Chief and Angelica reached the recruit's quarters. He kicked the door in and saw the recruit. He was cowering in the corner. The Chief beat him brutally, leaving him with a broken leg, arm, and four broken ribs.

"Let that be a warning." He kicked him in the gut one more time before searching the room. Sure enough, the weapons were in the closet.

Angelica crossed her arms in satisfaction and walked away back to the base to get some work done. While there, she absentmindedly walked past Fiona's door to get to her own room.

Fiona frowned when she heard footsteps. "Looks like someone's finished 'working'," she said aloud, mainly to herself.

Angelica looked at her, surprised. "What do you mean by that?"

"Nothing." Fiona looked away.

"If you're going to say something idiotic, you might as well explain!"

"I have nothing to say to you at all."

"I never did anything to you. You're a selfish nothing." Angelica ran away to her room in tears.

Fiona sighed. She was so fed up. She sat up from her bed and attempted to stand again. She managed to stand steady and slowly walked from her room.

Angelica was fed up also. Fiona was always acusing her of something. She's lucky to have me, Angelica thought. If it weren't for the V-Squad she'd still be on the streets.

Salzarr went back to his room.

Fiona slowly made her way around the base looking for Angelica. She genuinely meant nothing of her last comment, so she wanted to apologize for that. She was having no luck, and she was getting tired from the search. It was unlike her.

There was someone standing near Fiona.

"If you're looking for the boss, she's in her room," the Chief said to Fiona. "But she's pretty pissed."

She turned to him. "Thanks. If you need her for anything, give it twenty minutes. I need to talk to her."

"Anytime, kid." Kerensky walked down the halls to his quarters.

Deathenvay sat silently in her meditating room. The room was an entire illusion to look like something else. It was calming. Today the room looked like a beach. She could smell the salty air, and a breeze ran through her hair.

* * *

The Chief entered his quarters and started cleaning his M16. It didn't take long. Afterwards, he stared at a photo of his wife. "Still hard to believe she's gone."

* * *

Fiona walked to Angelica's room and knocked on the door. She doubted she'd get a reply.

"Who is it?" the woman groaned.

Fiona didn't reply. She just knocked again. She had to talk and knew she wouldn't get to if she replied.

"I said who is it?"

Fiona knocked again. If Angelica heard her voice she'd get nowhere. She folded her arms and waited patiently for Angelica to open the door.

Angelica stomped to the door and it slid open. She gaped at Fiona's face, then straightened up. "If you're here to lecture me, I don't want to hear it. Go away." The door slid to a close but Fiona's foot was in the way.

"I wasn't going to lecture you," Fiona said. She pushed the door fully open and put her arms around Angelica. She said softly, "I hate when we fight."

Angelica didn't move. She remained stiff.

"I know you do too. I don't know what came over me. I guess I was just a little jealous."

Angelica tried, but failed, to hide that she was crying.

"I didn't mean to make you cry. Do you forgive me?" Fiona asked.

Angelica didn't answer verbally, but instead hugged Fiona tight.

Fiona smiled. "I take that as a yes." She tightened her hug.

Angelica didn't know what to say.

Fiona smiled again. "You know what we should do?" she whispered.

Angelica shrugged. "What?"

"Elope."

Angelica gasped. "What?"

"We should elope. You know, run away and get married."

"But--" She wasn't sure if she was ready to commit. Would she be able to spend the rest of her life with Fiona, and Fiona only?

"You love me don't you?" Fiona tilted her head slightly.

"Of course I do."

"So what's wrong? We've been together five years now. It is time we took the next step and showed everyone how much we truly love each other."

Angelica stepped back, and was breathing heavily. "I'm just afraid I won't be able to commit."

Fiona shook her head. "Angelica, if you truly love me that wouldn't even enter your mind," she said softly.

"I do. But I've done things in the past I feel was out of my control. What will stop me from doing it again?"

"The same thing that's done it for the last five years. I may get paranoid but I know you won't have done anything."

Angelica suddenly started bawling. She sank to her knees. "Fiona, I thought you knew. I'm sorry...."

Fiona looked at her, confused. "Angelica. Is there something you're not telling me?"

"I thought you knew. I have cheated!"

Fiona frowned. "With who?"

"Just people. Remember that night club we went to? We got drunk and lost? I did it with some guy. And I had at that nightclub before, with other guys. But I thought you knew. You would always be angry with me later, so I thought you knew. I'm...sorry."

Fiona looked at her. She almost slapped Angelica but didn't. Instead, she turned away. "I can't believe you." She walked off. She went all the way to the roof. where she began crying. It had been the last thing she wanted to hear.
