Chapter 5
Under the Weather

Later that night, Fiona sat up in bed with a start. Her head hurt. She frowned I'll go to my own room so I don't wake Angelica, she thought.

Angelica turned over in her sleep and continued snoozing.

Fiona stood up and left the room. She was soon at her own. She sat on her bed, rubbing her head. Suddenly it exploded in pain. Fiona bit back a scream. She fell off the bed onto to her knees, clutching the sides of her head, doubling over in pain.

Fiona's scream woke Angelica up, even though their rooms were on opposite sides of the base. She fell out of her bed, alarmed. Something was wrong. She had heard Fiona's cry clearly, as if she were lying next to her. Angelica hurriedly dressed and ran toward Fiona's room. She knocked.

Fiona couldn't answer. She was in so much pain she couldn't stand, couldn't speak. She felt as though her head would completely explode any second.

"Fiona?!" Angelica cried. "Please answer me. Are you awake?"

Fiona clutched her head tighter has the pain started getting worse. She wanted to answer Angelica, but every time she opened her mouth the pain got twice as bad.

"I'm coming in." Angelica broke the door down and ran inside. She gasped and dropped by Fiona, taking her into her arms. "Are you alright?!"

Fiona was in tears by now. She was starting to get a fever and her breathing was getting heavier. Fiona tried to answer but still couldn't. She simply shook her head.

The Chief burst into the room. "What's going on? I heard Fiona screaming."

Angelica frowned. The Chief always seemed to be everywhere.

"I don't know. She's in pain. I'm taking her to the nurse." She lifted Fiona up and began carrying her to the infirmary as fast as she could.

Fiona, for once, didn't fight. She was in far too much pain.

"Why am I always around when crap like this happens?" the Chief wondered aloud.

Angelica didn't answer him. She had so much on her mind. What if she lost Fiona? Where would she and Selena be?

Lucas suddenly walked up to them. "What's wrong? I heard a scream."

"Hurry! She needs a doctor. Something's wrong with her."

"It's a good thing I am a doctor, then, isn't it? Alright, get her to the hospital wing and onto a bed," he said, leading them to the hospital wing.

Angelica ran to the hospital wing and lay Fiona down. She took her hand. "Don't die on me. DON'T die on me."

"Think its some sort of repressed memory or something?" the Chief said.

Lucas approached close to Fiona. He was about to touch her when a lightening bolt, hitting the floor just where his feet had stood moments before, made him back pedal.

"Ma'am, was that Fiona's powers?" he asked Angelica.

She only nodded in reply.

Lucas nodded back. "Alright, she's losing control of her powers. I'll have to sedate her. And I need you both to stand back. If she hits either of you, you could die. Sir, I doubt it'll be a suppressed memory. The visible symptoms may mean she has a infection somewhere in her body."

"Well, that kills my theory," the Chief said, walking back.

"Fiona, can you hear me? If you can, I need you to try and calm down. I need to help you but you have to let me close." Lucas tried to calm Fiona. She tried to do so but it invoked more lightening bolts.

Angelica didn't want to leave Fiona's side.

Lucas studied the scene for a few moments. "Ma'am, I'm watching the pattern of her powers. It seems they aren't striking you. You're going to have to give her the sedative."

Lucas filled a needle with a clear liquid.

"I don't know what's in that stuff!" Angelica snapped. "I don't even know you. How can I trust you?"

"I don't trust him either. I hope he remembers my warning about patients dying under his treatment," Kerensky said, keeping one hand near his pistol.

"Because I'm your only hope. She will almost certainly die if you don't sedate her. She needs help and she isn't in a fit state to receive it. You can look at the bottle as well, but just put the needle in her arm and push the plunger." Lucas walked up to her at a safe distance from Fiona and hand her the vial and needle.

Angelica frantically injected the liquid into Fiona's arm and waited.

Fiona's wild movements began to slow down and eventually stop. Her chest rose and fall slowly and calmly. The lightening ceased as well.

Lucas walked up to the bed and checked her pulse. "It's a little fast, but it'll return to normal in a few minutes." He began preparing an anti-biotic drip.

Angelica just sat by Fiona, wondering.

"So what now, Doc?" the Chief asked, still keeping his hand near his pistol.

"I'll put this drip in her. It should send the infection into remission. But I need to run a few tests to pinpoint the infection, if that's alright with you, ma'am."

Angelica nodded.

Lucas nodded. "If it'll help you feel better, we can pass a rule that says no one can enter here without your permission, and you can over look all tests I carry out, and any medication change or drip changes."

"Good. I don't want anyone else coming into here without me knowing who it is. Someone could try to hurt her."

Lucas nodded and placed the drip needle in Fiona's hand and looked up at Angelica.

"I'll set up heart monitors and motion sensors that connect to my beeper. So if anything happens while I'm not in the room, I'll know about it straight away. I have a spare. So if you'd like, I can give you it."

"What's in that IV?" Angelica asked.

"Do you want me stay in here or leave?" asked Kerensky. "It's your call, Boss."

"Leave. Get your sleep."

"You're the boss." The Chief walked out of the room.

Angelica grinned at that. "I know."

Lucas waited until Angelica had finished speaking before replying. "It's anti-biotics. They'll fight the infection."

As the Chief walked down the halls, he thought about how he ended up joining the V-Squad. It was in Brooklyn. He had stood with two other men, guns pointed at Fiona and Angelica.

"Well, you put up a good chase, but you're cornered now."

The Chief smirked at that memory. Angelica was smart. She knew how the mercenary's mind ticked. Why kill the men yourself, when you can have someone else do it? Or why turn down the chance to gain another enforcer? She chose her investment wisely, even if two men died because of it.

Angelica sat in the chair by Fiona's bed and held her hand, about to fall asleep.

Lucas looked up at her. "Go to bed. I'll cover the night shift. You need sleep." He spoke as he added the finishing touches to the bandage around Fiona's hand to keep the needle in place.

Angelica nodded and fell asleep.

Lucas smiled and sat in a nearby chair. "Well, you've got everyone worried, haven't you?" he softly asked Fiona's limp form.

He sat back and waited until morning.
