Chapter 6
An Impossible Opponent

When early light arrived, Angelica groaned and stretched. The chair was certainly not comfortable.

Lucas was sat in the other chair. He held a screw driver and a small black box.

"Morning," he said as he turned the screw driver. There was a heart monitor connected to Fiona and it was beating a steady rhythm.

"What's that for?" Angelica asked.

"It's that beeper I told you about last night. I checked it and it was broken--a few lose screws. I'm just fixing it for you."

Angelica sat back in her chair, thinking about all the things that had happened in the past twenty-four hours.

"There, all done." Lucas stood up. He walked over to Angelica and held out the beeper for her. He bent over her ear. He whispered, "I'm sorry I couldn't make it as beautiful has you."

She rose an eyebrow. "Um, okay."

Lucas smiled. "Although I don't think there is anything as beautiful as you." He still spoke in a whisper. He stepped back.

"You flatter me, but I should get back to my girlfriend." She sat back in her chair and turned to Fiona.

He smiled and nodded. "She's sleeping and fine. You should talk to me. Tell me everything," he said softly, a small flirt in the way he moved and spoke.

Angelica stared at him blankly, except for the fact that her eyes were widened. "Tell you...what?"

"Anything and everything about you."

She frowned. "It's none of your business. Now, if you don't mind, I would like time alone with Fiona."

Lucas nodded, slightly disappointed. "Would you like me to leave the room?"

"No, you're fine."

Lucas smiled and nodded. "Alright, I'll stay." He sat in a chair opposite Angelica. He picked up a clipboard and started writing something on it.

"What are you doing?" she asked.

Lucas looked up. "Writing," he replied simply.

"Something to do with her?"

Lucas nodded. "About her."

"What's it about? I need to know."

"You can read it when I'm done."

She frowned and sat back in her chair. "This had better be quick."

Lucas smiled and continued to write, saying nothing.

Angelica tried to steal peeks at the board.

Lucas kept moving it away. "No peekies," he said playfully.

Angelica grumbled something.

Lucas chuckled to himself. "It isn't bothering you, is it?"

"No."

He chuckled again. "If you say so."

Angelica folded her arms and glared at the floor.

The Chief woke up with his alarm clock buzzing loudly. He hit the snooze button and headed toward the kitchen. He got his food, bacon and an omelet.

"Wonder how the kid is doing."

He finished his food and walked to the base loudspeaker. "Alright, listen up. Due to reasons I'm not prepared to announce, training is canceled for the day. Also, any and all access to the medical bay is strictly forbidden. That's all."

The Chief assumed that everyone heard his announcement, as there were cheers of relief from the rookies.

He sighed. Hope the kid is doing alright.

Lucas smiled at Angelica. "You wanna know what I put?"

She nodded.

"How badly?"

Angelica rolled her eyes. "Just show me. If it has something to do with Fiona, I need to know."

"It's only notes on her progress. And it's been unchanged since last night," he explained.

Angelica sat back in her chair and sighed.

Lucas looked up at her. "Do you have a X-ray machine?"

She shrugged. "I guess. Why?"

"Because I want to do a X-ray on Fiona and see if I can pinpoint this infection."

"I don't see how it'll work, but whatever."

"That's why you're not a doctor."

"I'm not a doctor because I don't want to be a doctor."

"Well, I am, so can you show me to the X-ray machine?"

"You should know where it is," Angelica said, "because I don't know where our nurse keeps it."

"Well, I don't know where she keeps it either. I've only just found out where you test bodily fluids."

"Ask the nurse."

"I haven't seen her since I showed up, and I can't leave here unless something changes In Fiona's condition."

"I'll tell you if something happens. I do know medical stuff.

"But in this business, seconds can matter."

"I told you, I know medical stuff. You have to, in my line of work."

"But my head will roll if something happens and you can't save her."

She sighed. "Just go."

Lucas smiled. "Alright, I don't know how long I'll be. I don't know this place very well."

He left the room.

Angelica stretched and walked to the other side of the room to get some tea.

Lucas began searching the base. He was lost.

Salzarr happened to be at the same part of the base. "Hey, are you lost?"

Lucas turned and smiled. "Em, yeah. You wouldn't know where the nurse is, do you?"

"She is usually at the hospitol wing, but today she's got the day off. What do you need from her? Maybe I can help?"

"I need to know where your X-ray machine is. Only the nurse knows where it is."

"It's in the nurses office. It's that office you have to use to get to the hospital wing. I'll show you. I saw the machines the other day."

Lucas nodded. "Thanks. I'm really lost."

Salzarr led Lucas to the nurse's office and showed him to the X-ray machine. "Here it is."

Lucas smiled. "Thanks."

Luckily it was on wheels. He started wheeling the machine towards the medical bay.

"What do you need it for?" Salzarr asked.

Lucas looked at him. "To take a X-ray. I can't reveal anything else. Doctor-patient confidentiality."

Salzarr frowned. "It's not a member of the team, is it?"

Lucas sighed. "I haven't told you this, but I'm afraid so."

Salzarr promptly went off to check all the rooms, trying to see who was missing from their own.

Lucas returned to the medical bay with the X-ray machine.

"I've never seen a portable one before, but you're going to need a lead vest and so am I," he said to Angelica.

"For the radiation?"

"Yeah. Fiona isn't pregnant or could be pregnant, is she?"

"I doubt it!"

Lucas smiled. "That's good." He began preparing the machine.

Angelica put a vest on. She sat and waited.

Lucas put his vest on and processed the X-ray machine all along her body. Once he was done, he taken five scans. He turned the machine off and smiled.

"All done. I'll go develop them and find the problem."

Angelica nodded and removed her vest.

Lucas was back within twenty minutes. He put the black and white pictures on the light board and studied them.

Angelica walked into the room he was in and said, "Have you found anything?"

"So far, a lot of broken and repaired bones. She's had some beatings."

"She's had a hard life."

"Who hasn't? I just guess some are harder than others." He continued to study the X-rays. "Hah, found you," he said to himself.

"What? What did you find?"

"You see this big shadow here?" He circled a patch around Fiona's midsection.

"The infection."

"Right, and it's hard to spot, but there's a faint shadow on most of these. It's spreading. But with the anit-biotics it may get worse before it starts to get better."

Angelica sat down and put her head in her hands. "I can't lose her."

Lucas crouched by her and put his hand on her back. "And you won't if I can help it. We might have caught it early enough."

She looked up at him hopefully. "Really?"

Lucas gave a soft smile and nodded. "It's part of my job to save people's lives. And if it means breaking a few rules to save her, I will."

"Break rules? What do you mean?"

"Well, rules like administering drugs that could save her life but aren't technically allowed in hospitals."

Angelica shrugged. "What do I care about legality? We're villains. We break the rules ninety-nine percent of the time."

Lucas chuckled. "Only ninety-nine? I thought it'd be more," he joked.

"The one percent is sleeping."

Lucas chuckled harder. "Well, that explains it."

Angelica laughed. Being around Lucas cheered her up.

He smiled. "You've got quite the sense of humor."

"Right. Now, let's give Fiona that medicine."

"She doesn't need any right now, although I should alternate the anti-biotics with a fluid drip to prevent dehydration."

"There won't be any side-effects?" Angelica knew that most anti-biotics were highly dangerous, no matter how carefully used.

"Only if she gets dehydrated. They won't work properly then."

"Then we'll keep her hydrated."

"I intend to," Lucas said with a smile.

"I'm going to get some breakfast. Keep an eye on her."

Lucas nodded. "Of course. I'll let you know if anything changes."

Angelica nodded and went to the kitchen to relieve her rumbling stomach.

Lucas was busying himself.

The Chief walked down the halls and ran into Angelica. "Hey, how's Fiona doing?"

Maddie secretly watched the Chief and Angelica talk from around the corner.

"We've pinpointed the infection and we're giving her the anti-biotic soon," Angelica replied.

"Alright. And don't worry about the rookies barging into the med bay. I prohibited all access there. Only V-Squad members can get in."

Angelica nodded and walked on to the kitchen.

"Hell, even canceled training to keep an eye on Fiona." The Chief sighed. "And Maddie, I know you're back there."

Angelica turned around and glared at the slave girl. "Stop spying on everyone."

"Ah, let the kid have some fun. I save the verbal abuse and beatings for the recruits. Besides, not like she could do any harm."

"She's annoying," Angelica spat.

Maddie's heart started to beat faster. She was only concerned but too scared to ask. She quickly ran off around the corner to work, mainly out of fear.

"Maddie, I'm not gonna hurt ya." The Chief sighed. "Well, ya scarred her off."

"It's what I do best."

Angelica went to the kitchen and ate a meal prepared by her chefs.

Maddie was going to sneak to the medical bay to check on Fiona herself, but she had to pass the kitchen in order to do it. She decided against that idea when she saw Angelica in the kitchen.

"If you want to see Fiona, I can grant your access. Not like you could do any harm to her," the Chief said to Maddie.

Maddie stared at the Chief, shocked. No one ever spoke to her except for Laren, who had passed away, and Fiona.

"I can't. I can only take orders from the Mistress," Maddie whispered to him, fear clear on her face.

"She's right," a voice with a Russian accent spoke from behind the Chief. "She answers only to me, and I'll have you remember that! If you dare try to convince my slave to disobey me, I will personally have you out and off my team. Am I clear?"

Maddie stood there and looked away, not daring to move unless asked, not daring to even breath.

Angelica walked off back to Fiona, leaving the Chief and Maddie alone.

The Chief sighed. "Don't worry kid, she's just pissed about Fiona being sick."

Maddie just looked at the Chief. She knew it was more than that with Angelica.

"I have work to do," she said, then off down the hall.

* * *

Lucas glanced up at Angelica when she walked in, then continued checking his notes. "You seem happy."

"Not at all," Angelica said. She sat in the chair by Fiona's bed.

Lucas looked up and raised an eyebrow. "Wanna talk about it?"

"No, not really."

Lucas nodded. "Alright." He continued checking through his notes.

Dragon Bane soared through Jump City, patrolling the area. Alex was in school.

Suddenly, there was a crashing noise behind her and she turned around. A car had been busted. Dents everywhere. It looks like it had turned on it's side twenty times. Smoke billowed from it and pedestrians were jumping back, keeping their distance.

Dragon Bane went lower to the ground and frowned, hoping no one was inside. She landed and saw a man emerge from behind the car. He looked satisfied.

"What's going--" She paused, for she had seen this man's face before.

He had dark skin, jet black hair, and an average, slender body. She knew his name. She had gone to school with him, she had fallen in love with him, and she had mothered a child with him.

His name was Jason Watson, father of Alexander Powers.

"Ah, yes, Jane," he said. He folded his arms and looked at the car. She scowled at how he used her real name. How did he know it was her? "Can you believe I picked up this taxi cab and threw it across the street?"

Dragon Bane could tell someone was inside, unconscious at the steering wheel, upside down. Probably dead, she though grimly.

"Jason," she tried to say calmly. "What are you doing here in the U.S.?"

He laughed. "Oh, that? I just thought I'd come to see you, Jane."

"Don't call me Jane."

"Why not?"

Dragon Bane's eyes went over the crowd of people standing around them. "Because my name isn't Jane," she lied.

"Tut. Lying, are you? Ah, no matter. I'll rule this city soon. I've got lots of power. Strength, psychic powers. It's wonderful. That's how I knew you would come if I crashed this car. Brilliant, isn't it?" Then his face went grim. "And it's how I know I have a son and you didn't tell me."

"I didn't want you to have to know you have a son three thousand miles away that you can't see. Besides, I didn't even know how to contact you." Her gaze turned to the car. "This isn't the time to talk about this. I'm arresting you for damaging property and killing someone."

Why did Jason want to see her? Why would he go so far as to almost kill someone to get her attention?

Lucas put his notes down and walked towards the medicine cabinet. He picked up a different clip board and checked through that before opening the cabinet.

"Are we giving the medicine to her now?"

Lucas looked up at her. "Em, no. I'm checking inventory. Making sure no one's taken anything and that the bottles aren't any less full, or even moved. Anyone with something against anyone could somehow get at these with us knowing about it, even with one of us in the room at all times."

"Oh."

"Yeah. It's boring, but it's gotta be done. People can die if it isn't."

Lucas looked across at Angelica and smiled. "You know, you can talk to her. They say talking to a coma patient can help them get through it. It it don't hurt to try."

"I'd like to be alone with her."

Lucas nodded. "I'll be right outside the door, in the nurse's office if you need me." He walked to the location he had mentioned.

Angelica turned to Fiona. "I know I already told you this last night, but I have to say it again. Don't giveup. Please don't die on me. I need you. Selena needs you. The team needs you."

* * *

The Chief walked down the halls, wondering how Fiona was doing. But at the same time, he wondered how well Maddie could fight. The slave kid, it might pay off to train her. But if the boss finds out, she'd butcher me, he thought. Just then, an idea popped into his head. But what if she gave Maddie to me? I think I can convince her to hand Maddie over to me.

Maddie, or Madelyn as she was also known, was sweeping the hall the Chief was walking down. It wasn't well known about her, but Maddie could already fight. She didn't know it herself, but Angelica had kidnapped Maddie's parents while her mother was pregnant with her. In return for their freedom, they agreed to hand their baby over to Angelica. Angelica had named her, as well as taught her to fear her and fight for her. All this, and Maddie was only seventeen. As she worked, she quickly glanced up at the Chief and thought nothing more of his presence.

* * *

Angelica finished speaking to Fiona and stood up, wiping the tears from her eyes. Then she went to get some strong alcohol. This was too much for her. She wanted to find Selena. Selena deserved to know.

No doubt Selena was with the nannies. She went to Selena's playroom and found her dressing a doll.

"Selena?" Angelica said quietly.

Selena looked up to Angelica, grinning. "Mummy, I've found a name for my dolly--Sally!"

Angelica smiled dimly and nodded. "That's nice."

Selena put her doll down and frowned. "Mummy?"

"Hmm?"

"Are you sick?"

"No, why?"

"You look sad."

Angelica took a deep breath and knelt by Selena. "Selena, I'm not sick. But your other Mummy is."

Selena's eyes went wide, but she didn't say anything.

Angelica continued and explained in the best way possible to explain to a child. She finished by saying, "Maybe if you stayed with Mummy for a bit, she will get better."

Selena's chin trembled as she tried to hold back tears. She merely nodded and followed her mother to the infirmary.

Lucas was back in the hospital bay. He had returned when he saw Angelica had left. He merely looked up when Angelica came back, and continued with his business. He knew what was happening, and chose not to interfere.

Selena sat on the side of Fiona's bed, holding both of her mothers' hands. "Mummy, wake up. Please! Who will read me my bedtime story? Please, Mummy."

The Chief found Angelica and Selena in the medical bay. "Hey, boss. This may noy be the best time, but I need to talk to you about Maddie. I think she would be good for the Squad. I'll trade you my years paycheck in exchange for Maddie."

Angelica gaped at the chief, not believing her ears. "Train my slave for the team? Are you insane? No. She's a weak girl and all she's worth is for scrubbing my floors."

"You know damn well she can fight. Give her a chance to prove herself."

"No," Angelica snapped. "She's not joining my team, and that's final."

Suddenly, the steady beep of the heart monitors stopped to a continuous tone.

"Damn it, Fiona, don't you dare die on me," Lucas said, getting the defibrillator.

Angelica gasped. "Selena, go to your room."

"But--"

"Go, now."

Selena ran out.

Lucas readied the machine, then pressed the two paddles to Fiona's chest. "Clear," he said as she reacted to the electricity. The machine reset, but the monitor still sounded a continuous tone. He pressed the paddles to her chest a second time.

"Clear."

Still nothing. He tried it a third time

"Clear."

Finally, the steady beeps started again.

"Vital steady." He turned off the machine.

Angelica breathed a sigh of relief.

Lucas was also relieved but he frowned anyway. "Fiona's heart just stopped due to the shock of the shout," he explained.

Angelica glared at the Chief.

Lucas said, "If you must argue, please do so away from here. There's a reason they don't like shouting in hospitals, and you two have just found it."

"There won't be any more aruging because this case is closed," Angelica stated firmly.

Lucas smiled. "Good. Next time might turn out differently if you do."

The Chief stood there, irritated at Angelica's stubbornness. "If this crap keeps happening, I'm going freelance again."

Lucas looked up at the Chief. "I have a feeling that giving away this 'Maddie' would be similar to giving Fiona away."

"Shes the boss's slave. Not the same as giving Fiona away."

"It is in her eyes. Something important to only her and her alone."

"Guess your right. But still, the kid could be useful for the Squad," the Chief said.

Lucas nodded. "Despite the fact she's immensely shy, and I'm lucky I got her to speak to me at all."

* * *

"So, Doc, when did you decide to become a medic?" The Chief asked.

"Well, I've known ever since I was a child," Lucas replied. "I had to look after my dying mother as a child, and miraculously she got better. After that moment I wanted to dedicate my life to helping others like her."

"I never cared about healing others. For me, I was always meant to be a marine. I was stronger than most of the other kids, plus my dad was a marine. So as soon as I could, I signed up for the corps."

Lucas nodded. "It's strange. There are so many people our there who get to our age and have never had any real dreams. Only dreams that can't come true. Yet we--or at least me--is living ours."

"I lived my dream. Now the only thing I look forward to is my next paycheck. The rest of my dreams are dead."

"I don't think anyone here has any dreams left. I believe this is the place for the unwanted to take their revenge on the rest of the world."

"I got nothing against the rest of the world, I'm only here to get paid," the Chief said.

"I doubt that. Someone, somewhere, wronged you in someway. You may not realize it, but deep down you want someone to pay for that wrong, and the world is what you seek to take revenge."

The Chief smirked. "Fine, you want to know who I hate? Its the frigging communists. Might not seem too evil to hate 'em, but I lost a lot of good friends because of those damn commies. But there's someone else I hate, but I don't trust you enough to tell you."

Lucas gave a small sympathetic smile. "I'm sorry to hear that. I had no idea."

Angelica, who was still in the room, looked at the Chief and the doctor. "What are you two mumbling on about?"

"We were talking about our reasons for being who we are," Lucas told her.

Angelica rolled her eyes. "Well, I don't need any reasons." But it was a lie.

"You don't need reasons. But there's always one."

"I got two reasons. You heard the first one, not tellin' you the second one," the Chief said. "I'm gonna head out. Let me know if anything interesting happens."

Lucas nodded. "It's entirely up to Angelica if I disclose that. But if it's alright with her I will."

"Disclose what?" she asked.

"Letting the Chief know if 'anything interesting' happens."

"I'll think about it," Angelica said, thinking it's our business, not his.

Lucas smiled. "We'll let you know for sure if she wakes up."

Dragon Bane growled as she was slammed against the brick wall of a department store. Pain jolted up her spine. Nevertheless, she sped towards Jason in hopes of burning him, but it was almost impossible. Apparently, he possessed superstrength and psychic abilities, making him an impossible opponent, as he could tell what move she was about to make and block it with great power.

Dragon Bane was losing to Jason. She growled again in frustration.

He backed away with barely a bruise. "Well, it's been nice seeing you again, but I can't stay to chat. I have important matters to attend to."

Then he ran off.

Weakened, Jane slid down the brick wall of a law office. People were standing around, watching Jason flee.

Get him, you idiots! she thought. He's getting away!

That was her last thought before she blacked out.
