Chapter 7 Her Infidelity Lucas looked up at Angelica. "Are you sure you're okay? You seem a little quiet." "Just thinking." "Thinking about what?" "Nothing...." Lucas gave a smile, almost a flirting one. "Are you sure?" "Yes." "You sure you're sure?" "I'm sure that I'm sure that I'm sure." "You that sure? Well, you must be sure then." "Yes." Angelica was starting to get a headache. Lucas chuckled. "Alright, I think we should stop the before we both go mad." Angelica laughed. Lucas smiled. "You have a beautiful laugh." Angelica looked away to hide her blush. "That's a rare sight, your shy side." "I don't have a 'shy side', thank you very much." Lucas grinned. "I think you do," he said in a playful, sing-songy voice. "You don't know me," she snapped. He suddenly frowned. "Alright, I take it back." Angelica felt a pang of guilt. "I'm sorry. I'm just going through a shitty time right now." Lucas nodded. "It's understandable. I was trying to cheer you up a little. I'm sorry if I upset you. I can't help but try and make everyone feel better." Angelica nodded and turned back to Fiona. "It's nearly lunch time, you know," he said. "I'm not hungry," Angelica said quietly. "Do you mind if I go get something to eat?" She shrugged. "Whatever." "If you don't want me to go, I won't." "You can go. I suppose haven't eaten much today." Lucas nodded. "Thanks. And you're right, I haven't." * * * Jane opened her eyes. Yes, she was in her room, in her bed. Then she must have been dreaming! That was the only explanation. But sitting by her bed was Alex. Why? He saw her staring at him. He rolled his eyes. "Mum, how many times and I going to have to save you? They could've taken off your mask." "You should be in school!" "In case you haven't noticed, it's dark. You've been sleeping for hours." "Then you skipped school just to save me?" "No. I was on my way from school and I saw some commotion. Then I saw you unconscious. Must've been a pretty bad fight. You never pass out." "Yes, it was a very bad fight," she mumbled. It all came back to her. She had been fighting with Jason. How was she going to tell Alex? He had never met his father before. * * * Angelica slept, once again, in that uncomfortable chair by Fiona's beside. Her back ached and she had a terrible headache. All she wanted was for everything to be back to normal. She wanted Fiona awake again, alive and well. She wanted to lay by her in their conformable bed, not having a care in the world. She didn't want to deal with this. She didn't want to lose someone else she loved. Lucas came back. He had a plate, which had enough sandwiches for two, and a few cookies, as well as a cup of coffee. He gave a small smile as he saw Angelica sleeping and went to get a clean blanket. He draped it over her and sat down to eat his half of his sandwiches. Angelica woke up, not being able to sleep properly. She stretched and looked at Lucas. "It's dark already...." He nodded. "It is. Today has gone quite quick." Angelica nodded. "I got you some sandwiches. They're not perfectly fresh, but edible." Lucas pointed to the plate with half the sandwiches missing. Angelica smiled. "Thanks." Her stomach rumbled as she reached for one. "It's good your trying to keep your strength up. Times like this can be more draining and tiring than running a marathon, and not eating or sleeping just makes you ill." She finished her sandwich and stood up. She walked to the door. Then she turned to face Lucas. "Can I trust you to keep a watch on her and notify me immediately when something new happens? I have to get Selena to bed, if the servants haven't already." Lucas nodded. "I will. The notification may not be me personally, but someone will, I promise." "It's good enough." Angelica turned around and headed out the door. She walked to Selena's room, taking her time. Her girlfriend was unconscious and on the verge of death, leaving Angelica and Selena to cope with it alone, and on top of that she couldn't help but notice Lucas' nice body.... No! Angelica shouted at herself from within her mind. Don't think that. Once Selena was tucked in, she made her way back to the infirmary. She sat by Fiona's bed again. * * * The Chief wandered in the armory, inspecting each weapon. This was his normal routine. Thankfully no weapons were missing this time. Wonder how Fiona is doing. * * * Lucas looked up at Angelica. "Can I ask you something?" She looked towards him but avoided his eyes. "Um, sure." "What's Fiona like? I mean personality-wise. I mean, I only spoke to her once and she practically bit my head off." "She's not normally like that. Yesterday she was in a bad mood about...something. Anyway, she's normally cheerful. I hated that at first. I suppose I've grown used to it by now." Lucas nodded. "I hate to be the real reason she's in a bad mood if I only got the aftermath." "Yeah, it's not pretty." Lucas chuckled. "She seems so innocent, but if you scratch the surface you'll know she's not all sugar and buttercups, and she'll bite your hand off for doing it then." He chuckled. Angelica merely nodded, not particularly wanting to talk about Fiona. It only brought back the reality that she may die. Lucas smiled and walked up to her. He looked deep into her eyes and gave a toothy grin. "I'm always here if you want to talk," he whispered. She blushed. He was slowly and subtly moving his face closer to hers. "There's no need to be shy. You can tell me anything," he said softly. "I've never been shy, I just--" But his lips touched hers at that very moment. Lucas started to push the kiss to make it mean more. He wasn't going to let her go.... She tried to pull away at first but gave up and wrapped her arms around his neck, savoring the taste of his lips. Lucas gave a smile as he kissed. Suddenly, there was a loud continuous tone. Lucas pulled away from the kiss and looked across at Fiona. "Damn it, Fiona," he muttered and ran to the other side of the bed where the defibrillator was. Angelica stood there in shock. What had she done?! She had cheated on Fiona, kissing this Lucas guy who she did not know from anywhere. The Chief heard the noise as he walked by the med bay. "Whats going on?" "She's flat-lining again, and she not breathing. I need one of you to grab a oxygen bag, or something with oxygen, while I try and restart her heart," Lucas said quickly as he rapidly prepared the machine. The Chief did so and brought it to Lucas. "If she dies, you'll find out just what happens when a 5.56mm round enters a human body." "If she dies, it won't be my fault. Infections are always life threatening." He put the oxygen bag over her face. "Can you slowly pump that bag to pump air into her lungs?" he asked and continued with preparing the defibrillator. "Got it." With that, the Chief started pumping. "I want you to let go off the bag every time I say clear. If you're connected to her in anyway when I put these paddles on your chest, the voltage will kill you." Lucas readied the paddles. "Understood," the Chief replied. Lucas nodded. "Good." He took a deep breath. "Clear." The Chief let go of the bag. Lucas pressed the paddles to her chest. There was a thump and the machine reset. The heart rate monitor didn't change. "Come on, Fiona, you have to fight," he said. Angelica stood there watching, crying and terrified. "Clear," Lucas said again. The Chief stopped pumping again. Lucas pressed the plungers against Fiona's chest. The machine reset. Thankfully, the heart monitor started beeping at a regular interval again. "Oh, thank god," he muttered. To the Chief, he said, "I'll take over from you." Angelica sunk into a seat and out her head in her hands, silently crying. "Thank God thats over." The Chief looked at Lucas and Angelica. "What were you doing in here?" "Same thing we've been doing since we had to sedate Fiona. We've been keeping her alive," Lucas replied. He swapped Fiona's oxygen bag for a oxygen mask. The Chief was suspicious. "Bullshit. You were doing something else in here. This kind of crap usually happens when Angelica screws up." Lucas rose a eyebrow at him. "As far as I can tell, Fiona's heart stopped because she stopped breathing. The first time it stopped was the shock from you both arguing." The Chief pulled a pistol from his pocket and pointed it at Lucas. "Tell me what the fuck you were doing in here or I'll shoot you in the stomach." "Excuse me, sir, but I already told you what we were doing. If we were doing anything else, as you believe, it would not be any of your business. Also, if you shoot me in the stomach and Fiona flat lines again, she dies. Now, please hold your temper and remove your self from this room, because you are distressing my patient, and every time her heart stops, the harder it is for me to start again and the more dangerous it is for her," Lucas explained calmly. The Chief reluctently put his pistol away. "If I find out you're hiding info, I will beat you to a bloody pulp." Lucas nodded. "I can assure you, I'm not." "If I 'screwed up'," Angelica snapped. "It's none of your business!" "I'm thinking its best if I leave." With that, Kerensky left the room. Lucas sighed with relief. "Thank goodness." |
