Chapter 8
Coming to Fruition

As the Chief walked down the hall, he saw Maddie scrubbing the floor.

"Hey kid, once you're done, come the the training area."

Madelyn looked up at the Chief liked he'd just swore at her. "I'm sorry, sir, I can only follow the Mistress' orders," she replied quietly and shyly.

"I advise you to accept the offer, unless you want to scrub the floors and be kicked around for the rest of your life. I can teach you how to fight, how to defend yourself."

"I'm sorry, sir, I have to do my chores. If the Mistress knew I was even talking to you without her permission she would punish me," Maddie replied. As much as she'd like to take the offer up, her fear for Angelica was far too great than to do anything but what Angelica said.

The Chief sighed. "Listen, if the boss see us talking, I'll take the blame. I'll help you finish your work. All I ask is that you meet me in the training area once your chores are done."

Maddie looked away from him. "I'm sorry, sir. My mistress would kill me if I obeyed anyone but her."

"You know something, you don't have any guts at all. You just sit there and take orders. People will take advantage of that and abuse you. If you what to be a servant the rest of your life, fine. Just remember I gave you a chance to be somebody," the Chief said.

Maddie looked away from the Chief. There were tears in the corners of her blue eyes.

"This is the only life I know, sir. I have nowhere else. This is all I have ever known, all I ever will. If it were not for the Mistress, I would be on the streets," she replied quietly.

The Chief looked at Maddie with sympathy. "I don't know what life has been for you, but I kow damn well how it feels to lose someone you love. I heard about how you were taken from your parents. It must have been depressing. I didn't lose my parents, but I lost my wife." Tears formed in his eyes. "I don't know why I'm telling you this, it just feels like I should."

Maddie looked up at him. "Parents? Sir, the mistress found me on the street as a baby."

"Maddie, I can tell you that its a damn lie. The boss kidnapped you parents. They gave you to her in exchange for their freedom. I don't give a shit what the boss does to me for telling you this," he explained.

Maddie didn't say anything, she couldn't. She wanted to speak but no words would come. She gave a frown and looked to the floor. "I really have to get on with my work. The Mistress will punish me." She replied as loud as she could, but her voice was barely above a whisper.

The Chief was fed up now. He pulled Maddie up and dragged her by the wrist to the training area. "I didn't want to have to use force. Pick up a rifle and lets see what you can do."

"I'm sorry, sir, I'm not allowed to use weapons. I'm trained only in hand to hand combat," Maddie said. She was terrified, only of what the Chief would do to her, but of what Angelica would do to her for obeying him.

"Fine, let's see you hand to hand fighting. We'll move to rifles later."

Suddenly, someone grabbed the Chief by the back and put something cold to his neck. "Get your hands off my servant!" someone with a Russian accent snapped. She whispered in his ear, "I'll teach you mind your own business, old man. You won't have a chance to take her."

The knife was cutting into his skin.

Maddie stared in horror. She bowed, mainly in fear. "Mistress, please forgive me. He just took me," she said quietly, nervousness in her voice.

"Angelica, you might have a knife, but I've got a grenade. It'll blow us both to bits. If you want to stay in one piece, let Maddie prove herself," the Chief said, his finger on the grenade's pin. "Ohh, I forgot to mention, she knows about her parents now."

"Don't believe whatever lie he tells you," Angelica said. She then addressed the Chief, "And you remember--if you set off the grenade you'll be blown to bits too. Do you really want that?"

"Better than letting that kid be a slave for the rest of her life."

"You're crazy if you think I'm letting her on my team and letting you stay. You're out."

"Do I look like I give a damn? I'm a merc, I can find work in plenty of places. If that kid gets my spot on the team, fine. Just as long as she can be somebody."

"If you do leave, I'll find another replacement, and she won't be it. It's my team."

The Chief cursed. "Well, Maddie, I did what I could to give you a better life. Seems like God is pissed off at you."

"Forgive me, Mistress." Maddie said, then looked at the Chief. "I'm sorry," she said to him.

"Just go to your room while I sort Kerensky out."

Madelyn bowed and nodded. "Yes, Mistress." She walked out of the training room, terrified.

"Do your worst. All I did was try to help the kid."

"I'll have you know she's obviously better off with me. Her parents gave her up to a villain for their own freedom."

"She's been a slave for seventeen years. I'd say she's earned her freedom."

"It'd be cruel to even let her go, now. She's doesn't know anything. It would be like putting a child in the middle of a city alone."

"Hey, I'll gladly take care of the kid. I might not know much about being a dad, but I know damn well how to care for someone."

Angelica let go of the Chief. "Just go and pack. You're out of here."

Madalyn sat on her cot in her room. The room was tiny and empty except for the little bed and a small pile of neatly folded clothes Fiona had given her. Fiona claimed they were ones she didn't want any more, but Maddie knew Fiona would have gone out and bought them for her and her alone. Maddie looked at the clothes and let out a small smile.

Maddie remembered back to the first time she had met Fiona, five years ago. Fiona had defended her, much to Angelica's annoyance. Fiona hadn't changed a bit. She was always there to set Angelica straight, and she was the only one whom Angelica wouldn't punish or stop from doing anything.

Suddenly Maddie felt a pang of guilt. Fiona would move mountains for Maddie and she never gave Fiona the time of day. She knew she may never get the time to make it up to her. Now her mind moved on to the fight that was going on between Angelica and the Chief. She knew the only person who could get away with stopping it was Fiona, and she couldn't. Madelyn knew she'd feel guilty and blame herself in either or both of them died.

The Chief walked out, angry with Angelica. It was time for him to go freelance again. But this would not be like the other times. Now he had enough cash to start his own private military company. But he would visit Fiona one last time before he left.

He walked into the medical bay and stood next to Fiona. "Get well soon, kid. Oh, and take care of Maddie."

Lucas looked up at him. "You're leaving?"

"I just had an argument with Angelica. She booted me out. If you need a job done, give me a call."

"If I leave here, I'll be sure to keep that in mind. Don't mind me asking, but what did you two fight about?"

"Remember that slave kid? I tried to offer her a better life, but Angelica was uncooperative."

Lucas smiled and nodded. "You have to understand a woman's boundaries, and you have to understand that Angelica's under a great amount of stress. Maybe she will be calmer in a month or so."

"Too late now. I'm off the team." The Chief looked at Fiona. "How long 'til she wakes up?"

“Truthfully I don't know. She may never wake. But that just means she'll be in a coma for the rest of her life," Lucas explained truthfully.

It was the next morning. The Chief had finished packing and walked out the main entrance. Time to hit the road, he thought as head climbed onto his motorcycle and rode off.

He knew where he was going. There was an small island south of the city called Grand Nixon Island. Not many people knew about it, not even Angelica knew. It was the perfect place to start building up his mercenary force. Hopefully he would find a helicopter pilot dumb enough to fly him there.

JANE,
TELL THE BOY, NOW.
YOUR EX-LOVER

Jane took a deep breath and sighed. She was being blackmailed by Jason to tell Alex his dad was in town.

"Well," Jane said to herself. "He's not getting Alex."

Jane walked downstairs and made breakfast.

Angelica went to her bedroom and swallowed one of the many pills she usually took. Not because she needed them. She never needed them. She was addicted.

She then went back to the infirmary, sighing.

Lucas looked up and smiled. "You okay?"

"Yeah. I guess." She felt guilt build up again at the thought of kissing Lucas.

"In that case, will you come for a little walk with me? I have something to show you." He was still smiling.

"And what's that?"

Lucas grinned and took her hand. "You'll see."

He led her from the room. He took her around the halls for a few moments then stopped in front of a door and opened it.

"Here we are," he whispered to her.

Angelica rose an eyebrow. "What are you doing?"

"Come in here with me. What I want to show you is inside," Lucas explained. The room from the outside looked dark.

Angelica's instinct told her to not go in. She backed away. This was supposed to be apart of her base, and yet she had no idea where the door led to. "No. I don't like the way it looks."

Lucas smiled. "Trust me, I'll turn the light on when we go in. It's part of the surprise," he said, leaning closer.

Angelica's heart raced.

"Please, come in with me," he whispered into her ear.

Angelica nodded and followed, having a bad feeling about it.

Lucas lead her into the dark room and shut the door. He pulled her close to him. "I love you, Angelica," he whispered. He kissed her.

Love? She tried to pull away, then gasped. Lucas had Angelica's hand's behind her back. As he kissed, he placed something cold and metallic around Angelica's wrists. He grinned and pulled away. He then disappeared into the darkness.

The Chief sat in the seat of a UH-60 Blackhawk, heading towards Grand Nixon Island.

"Say, buddy, what the hell do want to go to Grand Nixon for?" the pilot asked him.

"Does it really matter? I'm paying ya, so focus on flying."

The pilot sighed.

It wasn't long before they reached the island. "Here she is. Grand Nixon Island. Population, zero. Points of interest, jack shit." The pilot laughed.

"Just land the damn chopper."

As the helicopter landed, the Chief unstrapped the seat-belt and jumped out of the chopper.

"Okay, pay up buddy."

The Chief thought for a moment. "How about, no?"

He pulled a pistol from his pocket and shot the pilot. He pulled the body out, and turned on the radio. "Attention, I'm broadcasting on all mercenary frequencies. Any one that can hear this, report to Grand Nixon Island, you'll get a very good contract here."

The Chief waited for a response, and after two minutes one came.

"This Iron Snake, we copy. Heading to Grand Nixon now."

He sighed with relief. Then another reply came.

"This is Gorgon 5, we're heading to Grand Nixon now."

The Chief grinned. Yeah, business is gonna be good.

He watched as the small fleet of helicopters approached the island. They landed, and dozens of mercenaries poured out. One walked up to him.

"You the one that sent out that broadcast?" he asked.

"Yeah. Ya see, I'm forming a new merc company. Of course, I need lots of soldiers for that, which is where you come in."

The mercenaries chatted for a minute, then looked at the Chief. "We're in."

The Chief smirked. "Alright then, start setting up camp. We need to establish a base on the double."

As the mercenaries established their base, the Chief wondered what Angelica was up to.

I can't wait to see the look on her face when she finds out about this.

In fact, he would tell her personally. But that would have to wait, the primary concern now was making sure that his men were armed and ready to fight.
