Chapter 11

Finally, Maya stopped.

"We're here," she said as she stood in front of a cave.

Angelica looked around. "This is it? Just a cave?"

"What did you expect, a palace?" Adalira demanded.

"No, but I was expecting something a little more civilized."

"We are in the wilds of our land," Maya said. "We do not build on such places. But it is either this or something in a tree. And this is natural."

Adalira nodded. "We should go in now." She stepped out of the way. "After you two."

Fiona understood from the body language that they had to go in first. And she did. It was dark in the cave so she made a small sun sphere. She didn't seem bothered at all.

"Is that witchcraft?" Maya asked Adalira.

Adalira nodded. "We should be cautious with these two."

Maya nodded. She whispered, "We should stand guard in the night. Every two hours we should change and keep out sleep. Let them believe it is to watch for danger."

Adalira agreed.

"It's deeper than it looks in here," Fiona said with a smile to Angelica.

"What is your theory on the light-haired one," Maya asked Adalira in a whisper. "Why can she not speak our tongue?"

"She may speak our tongue, and she may think she's too good to speak to us."

"Maybe we should try and make her speak with us."

Fiona was reminded of the days before she met Angelica. She would often find herself alone hiding in a cold, dark cave avoiding the authorities. This was nothing new to her. And it saddened her. Those were days she did not want to ever return to. She found herself feeling down for a moment before her optimistic smile came back.

"We shall later," Adalira replied. "For now I tire."

Adalira went to one side of the cave and sat on one of the many pillows.

That night, Angelica kept tossing and turning. She could not take her mind off of what was to come. What if they didn't win the fight with Casimir? What if Adalira and Maya were double crossers and would turn Angelica and Fiona in?

However, this was their first night together in months. This was the only thought that gave Angelica peace. She rolled over to face Fiona, who was still sleeping.

She looks so beautiful, Angelica thought. Hey eyes glanced over Fiona's sleeping body and she spotted something disturbing.

Angelica couldn't exactly see right, considering it was quite dark in the cave. However, of what little light was in there shone on Fiona's wrist brightly, revealing an enormous scar--melted skin. Fiona never had that before, despite fighting with an enemy who could summon flames. Angelica knew this had happened recently and she felt herself seething in anger over it.

Fiona's eyes suddenly shot open and she sat up. Her heart was beating fast and she seemed to be breathing heavily. She rubbed her eyes with her good arm. She looked a little distressed. Then she laid back down after turning over.

Fiona's wrist was now covered. Angelica lay on her back and stared at the cave ceiling. She had to confront her about it.

The next morning, Maya walked into the cave from her guarding shift. She shook Adalira.

"It is time to wake. We will be attacking after we have eaten."

Adalira stood. "What game shall we hunt today?"

"Time is short. We should gather fruit. The game shall be hunted at the castle," she added.

"I'll gather the fruit. You keep and eye on those two."

Maya nodded. "I shall. I shall let them sleep until your return."

Adalira went on her way to gather food.

Angelica stirred and opened her eyes. For a moment she was shocked by her new enviroment, until she remembered meeting the look-alikes, teaming up with them, and sleeping in their cave. She rolled over and saw Fiona was right there. She couldn't believe it. This was great!

"Don't worry, I didn't run away in the night." Fiona whispered. She opened one eye and moved her head to look at Angelica.

Angelica smiled. "Good thing, too, or I'd be hunting your ass all over Jotham."

Fiona smiled back. "Who says that's where I would have gone if I'd run away?"

Angelica smiled and kissed her. Then she sat up and stretched. Fiona sat up too.

"You have awoken," Maya said.

"Yes, so?" Angelica said. "And where's your friend?"

"She is getting our food. We need our strength in order for today's plans to be fulfilled."

Angelica stood. "Good, because I'm starving."

"Why are you standing. Where do you plan to go?"

"Not that it's any of your business, but I plan on finding somewhere to use the bathroom. Now, if you will excuse me."

She pushed past Maya to relieve her throbbing bladder.

Fiona smiled and rolled her eyes. Angelica could be mean sometimes. And she could tell when she was in her mean mood no matter what language.

Afterward, Angelica splashed her face with water in a nearby spring.

Fiona came up to her. "I don't think she's happy. She was shouting about something," she said with a smile.

"Who, Maya? Well, she'll have to get over it." Angelica stood and wiped her face on her dress.

Fiona smiled and shuck her head.

"You're the one who's worried they'll double cross us. If you keep making them mad, they're more likely to," she said softly.

"And I'll punish them for it. Simple." Angelica turned to head back to the cave.

Fiona gave a small smile and followed Angelica's gaze to the cave.

"She knows exactly where we are and she won't follow. She can't understand a word we're saying even if she has. Don't look so worried," she said comfortingly.

"How can I not look worried? I've been double-crossed countless times. I won't let it happen again. Better to be safe than sorry."

"You forget. All those other times, you didn't have me. Next time you talk to them, you will see they do not have the courage to double cross us. They seem to go quiet a lot, as though they are scared. I think they are more scared of us and will be glad to get this over with so we can leave."

"Whatever," Angelica muttered. Her eyes went to Fiona's wrist, though it was covered. "Last night I was awake and I saw your wrist. I couldn't exactly see, but it looked to be scarred."

Fiona resisted the strong urge to hind her wrist behind her back and smiled. "It must have been a trick of the light." She turned to walk back to the cave.

Angelica followed. "Fiona, there was no light. But I could tell something was there."

"Well, you must have dreamt it then. There's nothing wrong with me."

She took Fiona's wrist. "Don't lie to me." She uncovered it and immediately jumped back, gasping. "Oh my god."

Fiona pulled her wrist back and covered it back up. For a second she looked as though she might cry, but she didn't. She just took a deep breath and walked the rest of the way to the cave in silence.

It took a moment for Angelica to make her legs work again. She walked back to the cave and put a hand on Fiona's shoulder. "Who did this to you?"

"It was a accident. Just leave it."

"Fiona, two years ago you told me to never lie to you again. You should take your own advice. What happened? Please, you can tell me."

Fiona couldn't look at her.

"I...I...it's nothing, really," she replied.

"Torqueo did this, didn't he? I wish he were alive so I could kill him myself!"

"It's nothing. Don't get upset about it. I'm not."

"But it is something." Angelica clenched her fists.

"Just forget about it!" Fiona snapped.

Even though Maya couldn't understand, she looked up surprised. Fiona, however, hadn't felt like herself in a while. She couldn't pinpoint the exact moment, but she felt like all her feelings were stonger and her mood could shift in seconds for no reason.

"No, I'm not fucking forgetting about it. Years ago you lectured me about not being honest. Try your own medicine for a change, hypocrite! And if you can't be honest with me, you can forget about our relationship. Trust goes both ways."

Angelica stormed away.

Fiona frowned. She folded her arms and sat, waiting.

Adalira came back with an armful of fruit. "These insects are going to be sorry they bit me!" She dropped the fruit and scratched her bug bites. "I hate the wilderness."

Maya walked to her. “You should bathe them in the spring. It will sooth them. Stop scratching or they will itch more.”

"I cannot wait to kill my husband. He and your husband are the reasons we are in this predicament."

Maya nodded. "It will be satisfaction indeed to be able to return to our lands free of them."

"What will we do with those two when we are back on our thrones?"

Maya frowned. "I haven't considered it. But they may be troublesome to work with, as they have been raising their voices at each other."

"If they are fighting amongst themselves, surely they'll try to take over our authority...."

"I do believe that they would have tried that before now."

"No, they would not. We've only known them for less than a day. One who wishes to double-cross another always waits for the attack, waits for individuals like us to trust them. We can never let our guard down. Have you not learned from our past experiences?"

Maya sighed. "I believe you may be right. But we should eat and leave."

They finished their breakfast. When Maya and Adalira were done, Angelica came back and ate a bit of fruit. She said it tasted foul.

"Good," said Adalira. "Next time, you can get the food." She smirked.

Fiona had calmed down by now. She went up to Angelica, incredibly guilty.

"I'm sorry I snapped at you," she said.

"And I'm sorry I snapped at you," said Angelica. "It just makes me so angry that someone could do this to you."

Fiona looked away. "Please, try not to mention it. I'm finding it hard to come to terms with. And it's best if I can try and forget," she said softly.

Angelica nodded. "Have you eaten yet?"

Fiona nodded. "Yeah. Are we leaving soon?

She soon got her answer.

They packed up and began heading out toward Jotham.

They stopped at the front gates. The guards gasped and pointed their two-handed swords at the travelers, because they all looked alike.

"Imposters! Trickery! Magic!"

Plus, they were the queens.

Fiona stared at them. She didn't understand a word they were saying.

"Should we kill them?" she asked Angelica.

Angelica looked questioningly at Adalira. Adalira shook her head and stepped forward.

"Fellow Jothamish...ah, fellows. I come in peace and will explain to you all later why I am here with these two women, who look like my companion and I. You know me as your queen who has served you and tried my best to try to make this land's laws fair. The least you can do to pay me back is letting me and my travelers pass through without a dual or harm."

The two guards stared blankly at their queen and exchanged confused looks. Then they raised their spears and lunged at them.

Adalira sighed and stepped to the side, the guards missing her.

"I feared it would come to this. You'll later see I'm doing this for your own good." She pointed at the two of them with both index fingers. Then she concentrated her energy on them. All four eyelids drooped. Then they dropped their weapons and fell to the ground, asleep.

Adalira turned to her companions. "In a matter of time someone will be here to fill their post and they'll find them unconscious. Or perhaps by then these two men will already be awake, so we must hurry."

She lead the way through the iron gates.

"What was that all about?" Fiona asked in a whisper. She was still confused.

"Are there any secret passage ways?" Maya asked.

Adalira shook her head. "We'll have to go through the streets."

She pressed her hands together. When she brought them apart, something expanded into a large pile of cloth. She handed each peace to everyone--they were cloaks.

"Wear those. People will think nothing of it because people who wish to hide wear these, and no one goes near them in fear of being caught up in their crimes. Now, let's go, and try not to draw too much attention to yourself."

Fiona looked at the cloak. "What are these for?" she asked, due to the language barrier.

"She says that it'll hide our faces, and those who wear cloaks to hide their faces are usually involved in something illegal, so people steer clear of them," Angelica answered.

"Wouldn't that make us more suspisious to the guards?"

"The guards suck anyway."

Fiona smiled. "Not good enough for your standards, then," she said jokingly as she put the cloak on over her shoulders.

They crept their way through the city, past farmers selling food from their crops and peasants trying to make a living.

"It looks dirtier here," Fiona said, turning her nose up.

They stopped at the castle wall. Adalira used her powers to make the guards fall asleep, then walked right in the walls, down the yard, and knocked on the large double doors.

Fiona smiled. "Maybe we should just make our own way in, or at least guard them," she whispered to Angelica.

Angelica said to Maya, "Perhaps we should sneak in? Surprise them?"

Maya glanced at her. "It does seem more acceptable. But this may be part of her plan. But you may discuss your idea if you wish."

Adalira turned to Angelica. "I have no reason to sneak. If they attack, I shall take them down, anyway. I will show them who has the authority of Jotham."
