Dynasty Warriors 5 Genre: Third Person Action/Fighting Available on: PS2 & Xbox US Release Date: 29 March 2005 (13 Sep 05 for Xbox) Here is my personal review for Dynasty Warriors 5, which I believe is the best Dynasty Warriors game yet. More great warriors, some new moves all added to the successful Dynasty Warriors formula, yet another victory for Koei! Description: For those that are not fully aware of Dynasty Warriors, it’s typically a hack n’ slash action fighting game, based on the “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” historical story (or rather the RTK novel by Luo Guanzhong) from around 180AD to 260AD. Dynasty Warriors 5 is currently the most recent numbered title of the Dynasty Warriors series. Here you play as one of 48 Dynasty Warriors and play through their own individual story of the Three Kingdoms. It has added 6 new characters from Dynasty Warriors 4 with all in DW4 returning, after unlocking many of them of course. Story Review: Finally, a Dynasty Warrior title offers an individualized story for every character in the game! It even has each character discussing their position in the following battle to you playing the game; an innovation which has since carried to Samurai Warriors 2. I find it delightful to finally have unique solo stories for everyone, which also closely observes their historical and fictional (novel) achievements. This is a massive improvement to the limited 3 army based stories offered by Dynasty Warriors 4 & reasonable attempt to individual stories in DW3. This time around you will actually want to play as every character, to see all the different angles the characters of Dynasty Warriors have to offer. 9/10 Graphics/Sound: Another massive improvement for the series, the voiceovers are of a high standard on most accounts. Sound affects just keep getting better; add that to the great action style background music you’re in for a treat. Even the planning music is just amazing and will have you pumped for the action to soon follow. You won’t have any regrets turning the sounds up while playing the game. The battle engine also seems to have being improved; your ability to see ahead is gradually improving adding even more realism and enjoyment to the game. 9/10 Battle System: This installment of Dynasty Warriors is in my opinion the best yet in this area as well, while maintaining the same successful base witnessed in the past. You can have still have co-op play, one of many in your army having the ability to turn the tide of battle; can chain attacks, able to perform Musou attacks as you battle your way to victory. Differing to the prior installments is a number of new much improved areas, they are as follows: Bodyguards: Now you have only one bodyguard, but a decent one; which develops much alike the Warrior you are using. You can also have a number of them to choose from, depending on their various skills. Some of them can temporary freeze the enemy or even heal you; finally you will actually want your bodyguard around & be bothered to try protect them. Rather then just watch them get defeated in seconds by stronger opponents. Elemental Attacks: Now you can perform new elemental style attacks for some characters with your triangle button, most warriors of a Strategist nature can now use them as well as a few others. Lu Meng for example can summon a fire ball affront of him; which can burn additional health from your enemies. Then you have characters such as Cao Pi, who can summon an Ice ball in front of him; which affects your opponents by temporarily freezing them. Bases: The base areas which are witnessed in Dynasty Warriors 4: Empires have now being added somewhat to the Musou modes as well. Your enemies will now strategically defend certain areas of the map, adding to the challenge and realism of battle; take the mission apart step by step. While the Battle System has no major changes, which for some is a bad thing. But I don’t mind it at all; if it’s not broken don’t fix it right? 8/10 Difficulty: The difficulty is challenging; although not to the level witnessed in Dynasty Warriors 3, some battles still can however will really push you to the limit. There are certainly enough difficulty options available if you want it to challenge yourself further, and for beginners you can start on Easy to work your way in. The difficulty settings here are very suitable for whatever your skill level with the game is. 8/10 Replay Value: The typical pick up and play style of Dynasty Warriors is again on offer. But now magnified dramatically by the new individual Musou modes, wanting to finish every characters story is now far more rewarding and will definitely make you want to come back for more. And for collectors you still have the rare weapons and items to unlock by satisfying certain conditions during battle. 9/10 Final Thoughts: An absolute must for a Dynasty Warriors fan, and also a great way for those interested in the series to jump on board. For the die hard fans you have the best Dynasty Warriors title yet, and for the new fans you have a completely new and different game that will keep you hooked for many hours; and you can play it 2 player co-op!. This is suitable for new and old fans, and offers a number of new and simple ways to keep you coming back for more. Well worthy of making part of any ones game collection. Rating: 8.5/10 -------------------- *This is based on my personal thoughts of the game with my own experiences with it, I'm aware many may disagree with some aspects and that's perfectly fine; comments are most welcome! |
