明智 光秀 Akechi Mitsuhide 1526 - 1582 The general who's very well known for destroying Nobunaga. He first served the 斉藤 Saitou and then 朝倉 Asakura before in 1566 worked as the Shogun of that time 足利義昭 Ashikaga Yoshiaki's messenger, and ended up becoming Oda retainer. After proving himself as a worthy general in battles, he was rewarded Sakamoto Castle. During Oda's campaign against Chugoku region, Mitsuhide was ordered to subjugate provinces of Tamba and Tango, where he clashed with the 波多野 Hatano and 一色 Isshiki. It is said that when Tamba was taken, Mitsuhide convinced the Hatano daimyo 波多野晴通 Hatano Hideharu to submit so that his life could be spared. Unfortunately, Nobunaga somehow had Hideharu executed instead. The Hatano then accused Mitsuhide of treachery for the 'deceit', and managed to kill Mitsuhide's mother in a dreadful way. It is said that this resulted in Mitsuhide's great upset with Nobunaga, and possibly the trigger of the Honnou-ji incident. Several years later, Mitsuhide was ordered to aid Hideyoshi who was fighting the Mouri at Takamatsu. However, he instead marched back against Nobunaga who was currently resting at Honnou-ji. Nobunaga was finally killed in this surprising event, and Mitsuhide declared himself as Shogun... only for a short time, however. Although he received a favorable reception from the Imperial Court, he failed to gain support from nearby clans, including the 細川 Hosokawa, whose member 忠興 Tadaoki was married to his daughter (玉子 Tamako / ガラシャ Garasha/Gracia), and 筒井 Tsutsui who hadn't a good relation with the Oda. Mitsuhide sent a messenger to the Mouri to inform about Nobunaga's death, however the Hashiba troops intercepted the messenger, thus learning of the incident earlier. Hideyoshi then made a peace treaty with the Mouri soon after, and marched against Akechi. Thirteen days after Honnou-ji, the two armies fought at Yamazaki, where the Hashiba forces would be victorious. It is said that during the retreat, Mitsuhide encountered a village where he would be stabbed to death by a peasant's bamboo spear. Sengoku Musou (1,2), Sengoku Basara (1,2) |
