服部 半蔵
Hattori Hanzou
1541 - 1596

The ever famous shinobi, also known as 正成 Masanari. Son of 服部保長 Hattori Yasunaga. The Hattori clan was one of Iga's three major ninja clans. (The other two were 百地 Momochi and 藤林 Fujibayashi.) He was a loyal follower to Tokugawa Ieyasu. He was titled 鬼の半蔵 Oni no Hanzou (Demon Hanzou) Not only because of his superb skills, but also to distinguish him from another Tokugawa retainer 渡辺半蔵守綱 Watanabe Hanzou Moritsuna who was titled 槍の半蔵 Yari no Hanzou (Spear Hanzou).

He participated in a number of Tokugawa's battles including Anegawa and Mikatagahara, but his major contribution came in 1582, after the Honnou-ji incident. The Tokugawa had been staying near Osaka when the incident happened. To avoid from being detained by the Akechi army, Hanzou suggests that they should take a route through Iga. Not only because of many acquaintances Hanzou had there, but Ieyasu also had a quite good reputation there for sheltering survivors when Nobunaga invaded Iga in 1580.

He is said to be very loyal to the Tokugawa, and when he was ordered to assist Ieyasu's son 信康 Nobuyasu in commiting seppuku, he was unable to do so. He is also said to led 200 Iga warriors who formed the foundation of the Edo Castle guard.
