The thing to keep in mind when using them is that their shots are direct; so try circling your formation around a group of enemies and firing. Mounted bowmen should be used to harrass and disrupt enemy units(run them down). When lvling them try to lvl freezing arrows to max along with their trample attack first(after research of course). Freeze enemies then trample them with the speed burst(sorry don't remember the name of the attack.) Movement and Defence for horsebows is critical as well. It really helps when your running people over.
