If you want full control and the ability to guide an entire force, play IX. If you want to be an officer, take commands, and work your way up, play VIII. In IX, you'll probably want to start out as a large force in the beginning so that you can familiarize yourself with the game without getting instantly attacked in your only city. I'd reccomend Cao Cao in a post 200 AD scenario. In VII or VIII, it would probably be best to start as a high statted character so that battles and economics go quicker and easier. Zhang Liao, Zhao Yun, Xu Huang, etc. are all good choices for beginners. Though, I would reccomend X and XI. X does everything VIII does and better, while XI is a much superior game to IX.
