36 characters are selectable from the start. Yes, all the 3 kingdom characters. Which means that the characters from other factions are unlockable.

There are 5 elements here.
Wood = Poison; enemy loses HP gradually for a certain amount of time.
Fire = Self explanatory; enemy loses HP as long as they hasn't grounded yet.
Earth = Gravity; enemy cannot jump and when they're juggled they fall quicker.
Gold/Metal = Stun; enemy cannot move for a certain amount of time.
Water = Ice; enemy cannot move for a certain amount of time or until they are attacked.

There is also versus quests, with 2vs2. There is a gauge which if someone is defeated, s/he will be revived but the gauge will be drained. Win by draining the opponent team's gauge to 0 *coughgundamvslikecoughdirectcompetitiontosbbhcough*

You can switch characters without having to start a new game all over.
