There are only 2 things you can do against them in order to succeed: Kill them first when you see them Run away from them The way I do it is to kill them on the horse because it's safer and troops won't surround you when you go to attack them. Anyway be careful. If an archer or someone else throw you out of the horse the best alternative is to run away and kill all troops first. Later you come back to kill them.
