DW4 - Nanman Campaign - Shu/Wu - Hard.
Playing that stage alone and without being a commander (Zhuge for Shu, Lu for Wu) is incredibly hard, for me at least. Your allies usually get killed early in the stage and Nanman soldiers seem endless since each time you defeat Meng Huo all enemy strongholds respawn. If you get a good start (defeat Meng Huo a couple of times and Zhu Rong in a duel, get Ahui Nan, Dailai Dongzhu and eventually Jinhuan Sanjie to join you, make sure you don't lose all your allies), then your chances are still pretty good. But if you fail, well, all you really can do is to use a cheap tactic: fight near your commander until you hit 1000 KOs (max morale) and then just charge Meng Huo's base.
DW3XL's Very Hard difficulty also deserves some credit. It made all stages challenging to beat especially He Fei Castle. +1
The Nanman Campains where a terrible shock when I found out those people ride elephants (Yes, I started DW with DW4). Allied officers dying fast, babysitting your commander, and struggling with the elephants made sure I had a hard time.
