Hm...I would like to be able to have friendly units follow me (perhaps that's something that requires you to earn a minimum renown first, and then as your 'rank' increases you'll automatically be followed by progressively larger squads?), though I'd definitely like the "recruits" idea to stay - that's been vital, especially for training new books. I only now finished upgrading all of the chariot's attack capabilities, and that's only because I repeatedly bought chariot recruits, and I'll have more to go because I still have more to go.

Actually, they need a 'low-danger' training option, because once I finally unlock Engineers it's going to be a %&*@ trying to upgrade it, with everything else I have hovering around level 50 at the moment and the roughly level-40-average enemies it's going to take forever just to get Research maxed out at level 19 because my guys'll get killed a lot - it was aggravating just with Magicians, and I finally got those upgraded with brute force.

At first I would've argued against trying to have your own mercenary army, but after a few of your ideas (maybe not all, particularly food) I think it could work; how you'd reconcile having a lose cannon/mercenary command French nobility I don't know, which is why my original idea was to keep your character as a relatively solo persona and enable switching to any (currently) friendly officer on the fly. Still, I like the idea of fully customizing your own mercenary squads (rather than relying on getting lucky and getting the right tome/recruit squad you want), including special training (like 'Mind Guard') or weapons, shields and other armor.

Being able to issue simple orders (or at least requests, with increasing probability of being obeyed as your renown increases) would also be a great strategic boon.

I'm still wary of a 'Bladestorm Empire', I'd rather see more polish on the existing Bladestorm Franchise before we venture into side-developments like Dynasty Warriors branching into the Empires addons, though as long as it had New Game + and/or an effectively 'unlimited campaign' then I'd like to try it some time later.
I've gotta break out, I need a way out,
I don't believe it's gotta be this way,
The worst is the way that
In this room I'm suffocating
