After owning and having played all of these now.. I must say.. I > III > II Kessen 1.. Even though it was old, sluggish, had bad interface and you could win any and every battle with Cannonade+Rally spamming.. It still felt like offering me the most. It had awesome strategic capabilities on it and the fact it was made into sort of a interactive novel was what I treated it as. I put all my heart in the stategic part and let the game run by itself other than that. Yeh, I didn't touch the interface at all. It was so horrible I felt it was a drag and if I did touch it, I couldn't help but Cannonade spam the commander alive and win all missions easily. So I rather chose to watch and smile how the fights went on and just gave army orders sometimes if I had to and answered to questions. It was fun and felt tedious and you actually lost few battles here and there to make it more like interactive novel indeed. Kessen 3 was a great game and hands down really best out of these three easily but there was one problem to me.. It didn't offer what I wanted. I wanted a strategy game, not yet another Warriors game ! I was very displeased to notice there was next to no strategy involved at all and that your AI was a complete bonehead. The musics were _very_ repeatative, like in all Kessen games, though in this one I noticed it better cause at least more than half the time it didn't fit the gameplay at all.. All in all I felt like playing a Warriors-game spinoff with a lack of music. What I ended up doing was pop up DW4 soundtrack on and mute the music ingame. That made it alot more enjoyable. Kessen 3 was still despite all that a very very enjoyable game to play and a great addition to my collection. Just it wasn't what I was seeking for at this current moment so I was a bit down by noticing it was so action-based. Kessen 2 ..... Iono, I'm nearly disappointed I even own it now. I must say it was a horrible game, I'm sorry. I've never said that from any Koei game yet, I even enjoyed DW6 despite all my doubt about it first but.. This... Just after the tutorial I felt like not playing. I did continue and just hope my spirit fires up at some moment but no. Other than the comedic value in the game I seriously didn't enjoy this game. It wasn't like complete trashcan material but it was bad nevertheless. To name a few bad points.. Voice. God the voice. I never ever want to hear Himiko do a single spell ever again. Nuuunuuunuuunuu! NUUNUUNUUNUUNUU! .. You know what I'm talking about if you listen to her chanting the spell. And no other mage is any better at sounding like a weirdo doing their spells. Then the other stuff, well, they can't pronounce Xiahou or hell anything right and I just bursted laughing at the lines so bad sometimes I couldn't contentrate on playing at all.. "These guys are cake !" . Story. Yeah. I know. Kessen game and I didn't enjoy the story from the beginning ; I knew I'm f*cked. They tried to make a new story and yes it's hella creative idea and all but iono.. It just didn't catch my attention at all. It felt cliché and perhaps all the Warriors-series experience from before made me feel like they made Liu Bei into romantic lunatic here. And apparently Xun Yu's female now. Great going. Other than the comedic value of Touhou lasorz, Battle of Chibi, voiceact, footmen running as fast as horses and many more.. The game does hold still a pretty alright stragetic phase on it even though it's worse than Kessen 1 had and you can change formations around freely which is a plus. Cinemas also, despite sounding bad, do LOOK great and skills like magics and dueling look appealing. I also liked how you can aim your magics and raiding and how it can be more effective on certain enemy formations. If you ignore the sounds or you get a japanese copy of the game I think the game becomes at least average. So there's my wall of text for now. Definetely recommending Kessen 1 and 3 if you can find them, Kessen 2 only for collection purposes or at least watch some Youtube video first and make sure it's your stuff.
