I assume as a Total War player you also know never to fully commit to a fight, incase someone decides to attack you while you aren't prepared? :P

Let's see.... Are we counting expansions?

Shogun: Mongol Invasion, Medieval and Medieval: Viking Invasion, Rome, Rome: Barbarian Invasion, Alexander, Medieval 2, Empire, Shogun 2, Rome 2 and I played a bit of Attila during it's free weekend on Steam as well.

lol So far I've played Rome, Rome Barbarian Invasion, Rome Alexander and Rome II.

Didn't like Rome II much, though.

Was planning on Medieval 2 but never got it.

Yeah, Rome 2 was enjoyable enough, but it lacked in most areas that I loved Rome 1 and it's expansions for.

I will admit what I played of Attila, while being very like Rome 2 it felt like a better version of Barbarian Invasion. That being said, that's purely because it handled the Hordes better, which were the focus of that expansion. As a whole I can't say.

I'd recommend Shogun 2, especially after you've played some NA. It's much closer to Rome style of gameplay than Rome 2 is, although I still didn't like some aspects of it (maybe in part because Shogun 1 is my 2nd favourite in the series, right after Rome 1)

Maybe try Shogun 1 honestly, it's VERY simplistic (was the 1st of the Total War series), but I genuinely do love that simplicity, and the battles while less detailed still allow the same type of planning anyway. It's the map and campaign movement that is really simple, as well as unit variety, but really for feudal Japan that lack of variety makes sense, it had enough variety to keep it interesting.

Medieval 2 was good, and played almost exactly like Rome 1 with a few tweeks and era specific changes, but I really disliked the whole religious focus of it myself.

Medieval 2 wouldn't be a bad call if you just want more Rome: Total War, but with a twist on it. :asia:

I really couldn't get into that game, but my brother really enjoyed it.

One of the games I've played the most. :ph43r:

So I'd like to get Medieval 2. ^_^

Oh damn, school's coming. :kurokan:

Yea, that sounds interesting. I always tried to leave at least the ports under enemy control. Like, when I'm on the way to conquering a clan, taking every castle besides a port, that way any attacks from sea would hit them before it hit me, and with any luck, I could send a force of my own to mop up.

People get too cheeky with ports. And that is the one front you can't really take chances with. Attacks by sea, while sort of easy to repel, can be a pain with a large enough invasion force.

I always used the Oda, so my relations with other clans was naturally too low to do much of anything. Everyone either hated me, or was way too weak to even consider allying myself with.

And DAMN, when the coalition was formed. I HATE coalitions with every fiber of my being. I am happy that we can make our own coalitions now, because Everything I'm telling you about that AI is SO much worse when you have 4, 5 clans all working as one.
I remember one time, I was about to be attacked from 5 different fronts. I had my forces evenly distributed, but the size of the armies, I knew there was no way I was keeping half of my castles. Had to abandon them all, took all my troops and items from 2 of them and spread them out amongst the other 3.

Its stuff like that that I appreciate, though. I don't mind losing occasionally, or being forced up against the wall. But damn, were they relentless.

Yeah, I loved Rome: Total War as well, probably my favourite Strategy game (not accounting for "Tactics" games)

Not my most played, but one of the most enjoyable. Medieval adding in guns and cannons in the late eras, along with religion (if Catholic, can't attack other catholic nations without being excommunicated by the Pope which will make every other Catholic nation hate you, among other things) really turned me off it as a whole. It did have some pretty cool elements to it as well though, particularly regarding Agents.

Shogun 2 doesn't play that differently from old Rome games either, but does feel a bit different at the same time. It's hard to explain
I was very happy with Shogun 2 though after the disappointment to me that Empire was.

What's your favorite faction in Rome Total War, Barbarian Invasion and Alexander? :P Although Alexander is just focused on Spartha.

This thread can handle some interesting discussions. :ph43r:

I wish they'd release some of those on PS... Not sure if my laptop can handle those games. I would think so...

And even then, I prefer playing everything on one console.

In SoI ports don't seem to be a big issue. The sea routes are pretty limited. I'm kind of glad, I had similar issues to what you described in Shogun 2: Total War. The Chosokabe once launched a huge assault near the east most part of Japan, while I'd completely unified the East, so I had no real forces over there.

In SoI doesn't seem to matter though, as I said. You can see the accessible sea crossings and they are very limited, especially in the East. When you hit near Shikkoku and Kyuushu it becomes a but more complex, but still nothing too bad from what I can tell.

Coalitions seem a bit strange in Normal difficulty, at least if you are sufficiently strong. The Uesugi made a coalition against me, which the Hojo, Azai, Asakura, Satake and some other clan joined.

I then forced a counter coalition with the Date, Hoganji and Hatakeyama.

In the entire time only the smaller clan I forgot the name of attacked me before I struck at the Uesugi to destroy the coalition. I am sure if I left my fronts against any of them weakened it'd have been another story, but even so it was quite underwhelming. The Date took quite a hit when I called for them to attack the Uesugi's eatern holdings and the Satake and also the Nanbu capitalised on it. The Asakura also tried to fight the Hoganji, but didn't achieve anything.

The Julii were my favourite in the original Rome. Barbarian Invasion was probably the Sarmatians (always loved Cavalry :P ) and I actually never played much of Alexander, so I guess the Macedonians

Also i can't imagine a Total War game on console either

The older ones would be fine on a laptop I think though.

Coincidentally, it's that love for cavalry which is why I always play the Takeda in these things.

Wait, so are the sea paths like the roads, basically? In that you can't send them where you want, but predetermined paths?

That kinda... sucks. Some of the best battles were a simultaneous invasion by land and see.

And that is quite unfortunate, the coalition. Almost seems like a complete waste. Yea, the coalition in Iron Triangle was more like a request troops for like 5 different clans. They quite literally try to destroy you. Maybe it was the threat of your own coalition that stopped them? Which I suppose is the desired effect, but even then. Seeing about 15 units headed for 4 different castles of yours is a rush that you need to experience.

Also, I've always heard the whole thing about strategy not working on consoles because of no mouse, and I'm skeptical. Iron Triangle did it wonderfully. I really want to know what is it a mouse can do that a joystick can't.

My favorites:

Julii and Parthia for the original,

Sassanids for BI,

Persia for Alexander.

Probably because of my country being Iran. :P

Parthia and Sassanids have cataphracts, which is among my favorite units.
