Just saw the screenshots, and wow. Yea, battles get incredibly hectic, especially on more than one front. Can you still pause the action whenever you want?

That was absolutely crucial in not having a complete meltdown. I have been trying to get an answer on how the gameplay is exactly, because from what it sounds like, you can only set plans and whatnot at the beginning of every month, instead of whenever you want.

Aži Dahāka, I would like to hear why you can't imagine strategy on consoles.

I've never played any on PC before, unless you count Age of Empires as one.

Yeah, that's about right. Just roads by sea. Maybe there is some option regarding it, but certainly by the default settings that is what it seems to be.

I imagine it would open up nice invasions having the freedom, but I do think lacking that freedom does have it's own benefits to really solidify your position. Of course being able to solidify your position so concretely leaves you lacking those surprise invasions, which would leave you missing something.

I feel like coalitions will probably work better with more aggressive AI in hgiehr difficulties, or of course if I didn't have sizeable forces on all fronts ready to fight. I mean I needed to call in the Date for the Uesugi as I couldn't call on any of my strongest armies to fight them myself to keep the Hojo in check mostly. If I had moved them out it likely would have become a real mess, but can't really say.

What was odd is that the Azai never attacked anyone. They sat still the entire time. The Hojo makes sense as I took measures around it, but my units near the Azai all went and destroyed the faction which had attacked me down near Ise, so left that flank entirely exposed. They did have to cross through the Oda, but they have their historic marriage alliance with them so no issue in doing so.

Sarmatians had cataphracts too, part of why I liked them so much :P

I did like the Persians as well, but never played too many games in that area, I preferred the focus on the main part of Europe rather than nearing the middle east.

Because of no mouse. Choosing the options, moving the camera, selecting units, etc without a mouse. :ph43r:

Mhmm... I can imagine it being a bit more difficult, but if they just add in the ability to pause time, I feel like any game could be fun and manageable. I would hope most games let you pause. I could not play if I had to respond to threats in real time.

Yeah, if you couldn't pause I'd never have taken those screenshots

A month can pass in like 30 seconds if you want, but during that war it was abut 30 minutes a month for me, making sure I was keeping an eye on every front and maneuvering the units as I liked. Cycling them out if they got low on supplies or too injured, then sending them back in, without compromising my units staying in the fight if I could avoid it.

I feel like I was incredibly slow and cautious about it, but that is how long I spend each month roughly through constant pausing

As for the last part there. You only get a council at the start of every month, which is where you set up your diplomacy, your schemes, your development and such.
At any time though you can deploy armies, maneuver armies and any other military action really. Time will also move slower when you choose to personally take control of a battle, although so far I've yet to get the hang of those, seems better just to let them fight it out on the map so far
I'm sure if I get a better hang of it might make sense, could wipe out an army much quicker if you do it personally for instance, but you also take a lot more damage to do so.

Total War also has a pause function. The actual campaign map is entirely turn based, in battle you can pause and set up your formations or maneuvers entirely paused, so while it'd probably be a bit awkward it would be workable on console I imagine.

Indeed. I'm okay with the constant pausing for battles. It was only during the early game, and against coalitions when you ever really feel on edge. Otherwise, constantly on the attack.

The council phase is a bit disappointing. Having to make decisions in advance, hoping you won't need them at all during that month. I'll get used to it, though. At least you can march whenever you want. That would be impossible.

You can also call truces and request aid (offensive or defensive) at any time, as well as give commands to your coalition if you're head of one.

Aside from that there may be other odd things here and there you can do, but I amn't sure. How most things work end up being they only come into it at the end of the month anyway though, aside from Diplomacy it doesn't seem like too much of a hindrance, but obviously I have no clue how it was done before.

Basically, the council phase was your pause of time. Whenever you paused time, you could do diplomacy, build, develop, march, whatever you wanted to do, as long as it's paused. Which, as weird as it might sound, helps. It'll be a bit too late to call an alliance when the people next to you do it first.

And things were measured in days, instead of months. How long days took, I don't know, relatively, but the only waiting you needed to do was the wait for an officer to be free to carry out the order.

Which from what it looks like, is no longer required.
