I made one back when NA Sphere of Influence came out, I wanted to try it out during the free trial period, but I didn't get a chance to ... so the account has sat pretty much dormant since then :asia:

I want to get that again.

I'd tried out ROTK and much prefer controlling an entire kingdom to just controlling one person.

That, and ROTK really pissed me off in my last playthrough.

It looked amazing from the Let's Play videos I watched from KT America back during launch :ph43r:

I wanted to broaden my gaming horizon a bit, and since then I've kinda done that, but I never took advantage of my chance to try this game, and so I didn't end up picking it up :asia:

Now the issue is I have these games, but no time to play them :kurokan:

My issue with both of those games, though, is how hard it is to get people to follow actual history.

I stopped playing SoI because none of the events even matched up to the timeline after a certain point, resulting in people staying alive/not dying when they were supposed to. I can't remember the exact battle, but basically after Oda beat his brother, I couldn't get half of the events to trigger on time.

And so I tried ROTK and.... sigh. Last

Yeah, it's really hard to keep on track if you want to do the historical quests

I treat it more like Total War usually, just complete freedom independant from history, with some interesting historic stuff to change things up. Well except when I was specifically trying for the quests, where I was afraid to conquer near anything I wasn't told to incase it broke the quest chain. Was really easy for that...

IIRC it was normally the Azai that broke the Oda's quest chains.

Anyway, I am still away on holiday and it's a nice day out so I am going to cycle, I will be back for last later :asia:

Yea, I gathered that from the videos and impressions I've seen/read :kurokan:

Still, I'm intrigued and would definitely consider giving the game a try :ph43r: if I ever managed to work through the current backlog :kurokan:

Anyway, enjoy your cycling pay no attention to any tossed spears you may encounter

It was funny to me because I remember appreciating SoI because they added in tips for how to activate events. Maybe it was the Azai, I believe. Someone lost a castle that they weren't supposed to, historically, that screwed everything up.

ROTK, on the other hand....

I started my scenario as Zhou Yu when Sun Ce was commander. Did most everything I was supposed to, but unfortunately, Cao Cao took entirely too long to conquer Yuan Shao. And I can't recall the proper trigger for Sun Ce's death, but he lasted 3 years longer than he should've. And then in 201AD or so, Cao Cao finally conquered the North. I got the event for the 3 visits, and a few years after that, Liu Bei creates a coalition against him.

Which was incredibly shortlived, since Liu Bei, at this point, had one castle, that bordered Cao Cao's army. Guess what happened to him.... I had to personally take Jing in order to stop him from completely taking Central China. And I believe, Lui Zhang, dumbass doesn't move this entire playthrough. At all. Not one army moved. Him and the ...Xie? The force all the way at the bottom. Actually, I had to cheat and edit our forces because the way the game was set up, Cao Cao had an endless supply of supplies and gold, to the point where he was constantly able to send hordes of reinforcements one after another. And the Ma's, Liu Biao, Liu Zhang still don't move once. The second I try to attack them, Cao Cao sends a force to attack my rear.

So I just stopped playing.
Also. Last.

Not as time sinking as CS:GO, are they? :asia:

"35,974 hrs on record"

"1,647.8 hours past 2 weeks"
I mean, outliers withstanding they are much greater time sinks.

Much like things like Total War, Crusader Kings or Europa Univeralas, all Grand strategy are time sinks.

Now time sinks does not speak of their overall longevity, CS:GO being a multiplayer competitive game has more longevity if someone is to enjoy it really. You'll find people with insane hours in things like those, but I'd wager more people play multiplayer games to such huge hours in general.

EDIT: Of course some of those grand strategy games have multiplayer, but co-operative ones I actually find make them less time sinky, and never tried competitive outside of random battles.

Sounds about right. I've not actually played ROTKXIII, heard negative things compared to my favourites of VIII and X, so not gotten round to it. Seems like it carries over some of the things I amn't so fond of in SoI too, but makes it even more severe. That resource thing for instance, you look to people in Owari/Mino, or the people in Kanto (so typically Oda and Hojo respectively) and they have insane weath and manpower compared to most other regions.
The area around Osaka also being particularly rich, but never noticed quite as large an issue there as Owari or Kanto.

Yea, basically.

Not to mention, officer assignments were way out of wack. Part of Cao Cao's rise (and Wu's fall) could be attributed to him somehow hiring the extremely talented Lu Meng. I can't think of a full list, but a lot of people ended up where they shouldn't have been (shortly after destroying Shu, Cao Cao somehow convinced Zhuge Liang to become his prime minister haha).

There's also the territory bonuses the game gives you. Most of the good things (special troop types) lay in the North, so Cao Cao had an array of just... everything. And no matter what, he never ran out, and even when I tried to coordinate an attack with someone else's, he would always have just enough troops to take it back in a month or so.

I want to try and see if I can enact the Two Kingdom's plan on my own, but for some reason, this game doesn't offer a proper post Chi Bi-Pre Gongjin death scenario.

Indeed.

I've started another scenario closer to Chi Bi. I'm going to see if I can enact that plan after all. Just win at Chi Bi, and then take Jing. NBD
