A Philosophical Essay

Wrote this for my philosophy class. What do you think?

“Why?” ~Everyone

This question has perplexed and frustrated philosophers for over two millennia. The greatest thinkers of every time period, from the Greeks until today, have quested to discover the elusive answer to this all-encompassing question. Why are we here? Why do we die? And why on earth did our teacher give us a topic consisting entirely of a single word? As it is, I can only address one of these, and it isn’t the one about the essay.

Humanity’s greatest gift, which has allowed it to essentially conquer the world, is the ability to reason (no offense, romantics, but compassion didn’t invent the wheel). Hence, we have always tried to find justification for all we encounter, including existence itself. However, as sentient beings, each of us is different, and there have been many so-called answers to what we’ll call The Great Ambiguity. Some use science. Others turn to religion to explain our lives. I…simply don’t care. I don’t care what the “truth” is, and I find the notion of explaining life to be a ridiculous, fruitless, notion. The best possible outcome of this is to discover who’s right, as well as who’s wrong, while at worst humanity will learn that its existence is a mistake, which would leave to worldwide depression and insecurity. In fact, that’s not even the worst outcome.

What if it’s all a dream? I’ll tell you. If this is a dream, one day whoever is dreaming will wake up. And when that happens, we all go, poof, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. Would you knowing that make you feel more fulfilled? Would it give you a sense of purpose, or of security? Do you really want to discover the truth if that is what you may find?

No, but I think them often. However, I do occassionally write papers of similar quality (if different subject) from time to time.

Most interesting. Not only do you share my view, but we once had an assignment for philosophy class which was "What is the most important philosophical question and why?"

My answer was "Why?" because "Why?" is about everything. You can always ask "Why?" and you can answer everything to "Why?". To put it shortly.

Yeah, I personally dislike the term "why," but only in a philosophical sense. If you want to know, say, why your mom wants you to take out the trash when you're in your room and she's in the kitchen, that's ok. I just don't like wondering things like "Why are we here?" The only good "Why" question is Douglas Adam's immortal question, "Why do [we] spend so much of the intervening time [between birth and death] wearing digital watches?"

Let's take Descartes as an example.

Descartes most famous sentence is "Cogito Ergo Sum" or, "I think, therefore I am."

His reasoning was this: I doubt everything, except the fact that I doubt things. Thus, by doubting I confirm my own existance. I think (Doubt), therefore I am.

Congratulations! You spend a lot of time on figuring out you exist! How humanity will progress now.

Senseless. Go think about reasonable things. Finding nice stories to validate our existance or making crazy philosophies about how this world isn't real is so futile.

It's not even the waste of time that makes it senseless. It's the fact that he should doubt his own existence, and thereby validate it. The statement, when you try to follow it logically, is foolish and redundant, and inevitably becomes circular. Which is to say, he only managed to create a paradox.

"I Think Therefore I am" I love that saying...

I did. It's one of my favorites.

When I find the time, I'll try to type up another of my favorites. I have to warn you, some are distinctly anti-religion, if satirical.
